Cold Day Remedy: Pho, Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup

Cold Day Remedy: Pho, Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup

Today, I'm going to share a secret dive with you that's very close to my heart and stomach. This is a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese place that has the best Pho in Buffalo. This place is called '99 Fast Food Restaurant.  They don't do Sesame Chicken, or fried rice.  Their menu has no pictures and their take-out menu is the same one they use in the restaurant.  The food here is good, but people know to come here for the house special, the "Pho 99" menu.

Pho, is a Vietnamese beef noodle soup.  The word is pronounced 'F-uh' not 'Foo.'  I first heard about this place when I was working at a local Thai restaurant that offered the same dish.  My co-worker took me here after seeing my fondness for noodles.

This is a picture of my friend Rasheeda eating Pho for the first time.  She happily reports that she will be walking here from her house every week, with or without me.

Pho comes in a couple of different ways, but the basics include beef broth, noodles that never seem to get soggy, and thin slices of raw beef and meatballs made with different parts of the cow (nothing gnarly, don't worry).  The dish is a beautiful concept.  The beef slices are raw because the hot broth in the bowl cooks it as it's served to you.  The broth here makes the dish because it's so flavorful, as if it has been cooking all day.  And at the perfect time, it ends up in your stomach.  The Pho comes out very fast because like the beef, the noodles also finish cooking in the broth in the bowl.  The Pho is served with bean sprouts, basil, and lime on the side.  Some people pile it in with some Hoisen sauce and chili sauce.  I add a little bit of everything, but there is no wrong way of eating it. The key is to get a good balance of noodles, broth and bean sprouts into the Asian soup spoon so that you can get a little bit of everything in the same bite.

I decided to share this with you today because I always crave this on unforgivingly cold days, and today was a day I couldn't get warm (maybe it was just from looking at all the bare legs on the subway).  When I sat down with my friend we decided that without the Pho, we might not have recovered from the cold today.  From a shivering me, to a shivering you - try it, you'll love it.

their number 36.... the noodles with egg, bbq pork and string pork (I think) is to die for... I like Pho but that meal is like the Margie Meal for this place... I just can't pass up on the opportunity. Always great food and nice people.

They do have fried rice at Pho! Shrimp and pork sausage. Both very good. But I too can't get passed the beef Pho.

For a short time they also made Bahn Mi, Vietnamese sandwiches but they discontinued them because they weren't ordered enough. Maybe if enough people request them they will come back!

Pho is my secret remedy for the common cold. I order the beef Pho every time I feel under the weather and it never fails to open up the sinuses. And they have always been very consistent with their food quality and service. Highly recommended for those who are willing to venture into the Heights for some cheap eats.

My favorite restaurant in Buffalo, by far! Try #35, grilled pork on rice, or the lemongrass beef, or any of the bun, or....i could go on and on.

Please come back downtown again! The lunch crowd would love you!

So without pictures of the food, how does one order? I don't understand. I do feel like I am going to get shot or jumped every time I go there, perhaps it's the bullet holes in one of the windows in the building next door. The last time I was there a crack head sent her 6 or 7 year old kid in to try to sell candy bars to the people at the tables. I saw them on Allen the next night too, very weird. I digress, good food and hard working people.

They do have banh mi at Pho--as of about a year ago.

Another place to get a faux-banh mi that is really, really very good (roasted pork, cilantro, veg, etc.--and super spicy with lots of pickled jalapenos) is Joe's Deli on Hertel where this sammy is called "the body"--it's a slammin' sandwich.

Pho99 is a wonderful place. I went there today for lunch. Our food came out in less than 5 minutes after ordering. I've been attempting to make the peanut sauce that comes with the spring rolls, but it is never as good. I've never felt unsafe there, but I generally go earlier than 6pm. It is conveniently close to two cheap Asian grocery stores on Bailey (down about a block).

Does 99 offer those delicious buns with the coconut or sweet beans inside?

Pho is the ideal antidote for our WNY winters. If you've not tried it, you're missing out on some wholesome, nutritious and very reasonably priced fare.

@Ponce here is the recipe for the peanut sauce, 1 can coconut milk, 2-3tbsp.smooth peanut butter, 1 tbsp brown sugar, a squirt of fish sauce and a 1/2 tsp of red curry paste.

Heat coconut milk, add peanut butter, heat gently and stir to incorporate them and this will thinken, meanwhile add the other ingredients and simmer until thick. You can use this warm or from the fridge!

Fast Food 99 is one of my faves, I think I have been going there since it opened. When I am not in the mood to cook this is my go to. My kids love it, my dad loves it and all of our wallets love it!

Try everything once here you will not be sorry!
