The next time you think about ordering snowboarding, outdoor and urban apparel on-line, think again. While shopping for clothes on the Internet might be easy, the 'store' that you're buying your merchandise from is not plowing your commercial sidewalks. And they're not decorating the trees in your neighborhood. They're not even sweeping any sidewalks.
Earlier today I ran into Urban Threads owner, Ward Pinkel, who was busy plowing the Elmwood sidewalks from Forest to Bryant. He was riding an Elmwood Association mini-plow, and I immediately asked if he was getting paid for the service. "Nope", is all he said before hopping back on the machine in order to plow through the Lexington intersection. Now here's a guy who knows what's good for his business and what's ultimately good for the city. In my book, he's an unsung hero and deserves to be recognized (yet again) for the tireless and thankless work that he performs on Elmwood.
To add comic relief to the situation, Dan Fisher of Skunkpost.com was out doing some guerrilla comedy just a couple blocks away. He had set up a microphone across from Elmwood Pet Supply and was interacting with passersby - both on foot and in car. There's nothing like 'breaking the ice' with some outspoken comedic humor on a cold winter's day. As the local comedy scene continues to grow legs (more on that soon), Dan is the man who's constantly taking his act on the road and to the people wherever they might be. Today they were apparently banking and storing up on pet food.

Buffalo's best neighborhood wouldn't be anywhere near what it is without Ward/Urban. He is out there every day doing these things - plowing, sweeping, picking up garbage, cleaning graffiti, painting, hanging christmas lights, etc, etc, ETC.
While, I've never been against bringing in some bigger retailers - you'll never get from them what you do from stores like Urban and their owners.
Think about what you're supporting every time you go out to shop at target (I'm guilty of it). It might sometimes be more money up front, but you get SO MUCH MORE for your dollar when you shop at places like Urban, TreeHouse, Anna Grace, Abrahams, Room, Spoiled Rotten, Splash Panic, Blue Mountain, VBM etc...
