Outspoken for Equality Rally at Bidwell - Today @ 3pm

Outspoken for Equality Rally at Bidwell - Today @ 3pm
This afternoon there is an equal rights rally being organized at Elmwood and Bidwell. Supporters are asking everyone to attend in order to show our representatives that the dark ages are over and New Yorkers will not stand by while their rights continue to be denied. Bring a flag or a banner. Bring your family and friends. Stand up for what is right and demand that justice is served! Thanks to Senator Thompson for his support on this issue - we can only hope that the voters continue to support their representatives who actually speak for them! Here are the rally details:

Rally at Bidwell Today (12/5) Outspoken for Equality (www.OUTspokenForEquality.org) is organizing a rally today in response to the New York State Senate's failure to pass Marriage Equality this week.

Rain, shine or snow!
Bring Signs banners and attitude

Western New York isn't scared of weather, but the Senate should be scared of Western New York. Call if you have questions. (716-578-3782)

someday people will look back on this issue and wonder what the hysteria was all about, just like we wonder why it took from 1776 to 1920 for american women to get the vote. back then hysterical opponents warned that women voting would destroy marriage and the family. judging by voter turnout, marriage and family are more popular than voting. good luck, glbt people!

how about getting something like this on the site BEFORE the day it happens, so that people can actually plan on attending.

grad94: That's an interesting thing to site, since the traditional family unit has been in retreat since that time.

what "traditional" family unit? the polygamy & slavery practiced in the bible? the serfdoms of the middle ages? the pre-industial revolution craftsman with teenage apprentices and workers under one roof? farms with hired men? the bourgeois victorian household with live-in immigrant servants? change does not necessarily means decline.

I am simply saying it was an odd example to cite; in this example decline is the appropriate word, meaning less, not worse. Gay marriage may well be a move back toward the nuclear family rather then away. Recreating stable family units to the benefit of the state. I have not really looked into the topic at any depth.

God damn democracy always has a way of representing the will of the populace and not the vocal minority.

So 35 GLBT activists had a protest to cry that things didn't go their way. Wah! What is the big deal anyway? This has few similarities to equal rights for women and minorities. You don't have a choice of who knows that you are a minority but you do have a choice about how you handle your sexuality. Show a little restraint and self-control and people might take you seriously.

Really Jimmy? And, how does one "handle" his/her sexuality? Should one keep their feelings for a member of the same sex under wraps, so as to not offend your (seemingly fragile) sensitivities.

Did you struggle with being gay at an early age and "man up" and force yourself straight? Is that why you are an expert on how the rest should behave? Moreover, do you really think there is a choice involved here? That people would willingly "choose" a lifestyle that involves such external and internal (negative) pressures? I think not.

It's pretty simple about why this is a civil rights issue, and you might want to listen to the numerous minority Senators (Black, women) who spoke to that effect last week.

KarlMonroe/Jimmy: it's pretty simple. Don't like gay marriage? Then DON"T GET ONE.

Pretty simple. I see sexuality as a spectrum. I don't care if you have any particular sexual preference, that isn't my concern. It shouldn't be the concern of the government either. What's next, furries and rubber fetishes fighting for equal rights to display their preferences as a lifestyle.

Don't tell me there isn't a choice to be obnoxiously flamboyant and trying your best to show everyone your sexual preferences. What is the difference between your preferences and other preferences?

well, then deal: I won't thrust my egregiously flamboyant, pink boa-trimmed purse (because, that's what all gays have, right?) in your face, if you don't try to tell me what rights I should and and shouldn't have.

Sounds like Democracy at work to me....

You have a choice on how you behave. I am not saying that being gay is a behavior, but how you express that is. Just like a heterosexual couple who can't keep their hands off each other can be offensive in certain places and situations, so too can an obnoxious and somewhat militant member of the GLBT community who wants to prove a point by trying to be as obnoxious as possible. It doesn't help the cause. That is all I am saying. I am just saying that if your sexual preferences are sacrosanct then other sexual preferences should be too. Wait until we prove that people are born rapists or child molesters and they cannot help their compulsions because that is just who they are. They were born that way and we need to give them equal rights to express themselves. Will you support them? They have the same struggles that many of the other oppressed groups have gone through. Maybe we need equal rights for all fetishes and compulsions.

Sounds like democracy at work to me too!

Jimmy:

you do a discredit to yourself every time you open your virtual mouth. Do you get off on simply being a discontent on these forums (I have read some of your other "causes").

Just so I am clear, does demanding equal rights equate "being obnoxious" in your book? or, are you suggesting that my partner and I would be viewed as "obnoxious" if we were making out at a table next to you? If the latter, I might tend to agree...I am not a huge proponent of PDA...straight or gay.

But, in terms of likening gays and lesbians' rights to those of rapists or child molesters, I think you out yourself as a quite archaic and ignorant: being gay (which was, thankfully, removed as a mental disorder in 1973) is neither criminal nor wrong...rape and child molestation (the majority of which has been proven to be perpetuated by heterosexual men) are.

You can pick and choose how you want to interpret what I write. That is your choice, we live in a free country. If you have issue with my causes against oversized government and government intervention in our lives, then I would be surprised in you. I'd prefer government to not mandate who and what we do. I wouldn't mind it if the government stepped aside and said that you could marry anyone you want to and you could marry as many people as you want to. They won't do that and they won't allow gays to marry. Let's loosen the strings on government and let people live as freely and openly as they want. No holds barred. Let freedom ring.

karl, go back and read john stuart mill on the tyranny of the majority. in america, civil rights are not subject to popular referendum, or schools would still be legally segregated.

jimmy, equal protection under the law is not revocable just because someone thinks your personal conduct lacks sufficient decorum, or we'd have to revoke the civil rights of everyone who gets trashed and acts out at bills games.

agreed that the situation of glbt people is not exactly like the situation of african americans or women, but the arguments used against them are the same.

Will do, and while you are at it ask how many elected officials in the House and Senate are for or aginst such a piece of legislation. The voting booth and will of the people are always a great equalizer. Democracy sucks that way.

Travelrr: I'm for gay marriage but your comment, get real. How about I just won't vote for it, therefore, collective the bill will go anywhere since it doesn't have the votes! That simple bud.

opposite sex couples practice and enjoy all the same acts that any same sex couple can come up with in bed, including more kinds of fetishes than i care to know about, and they're still entitled to get legally married. they can even book the holiday inn on grand island for swingers weekends and still keep their marriage licenses.

now matter how heinous a crime you are convicted of, if you are heterosexual you can still get married. there is no law stopping someone from being stupid enough to marry a serial killer with 10 consecutive life sentences.

but no matter how law-abiding you are, no matter how sterling a pillar of the community, no matter how respected and admired, if you are homosexual, you cannot get married.

this is just wrong and it is why i back the glbt community 100% even though i don't belong to it.

If you are a homosexual, you can still marry someone of the opposite sex. No one will stop you. If your marriage partner is open to your sexual preference then you should be able to have sex with someone who shares your preference. This is the same arrangement that swingers have. It also goes for furries, infantalists, and people into BDSM. Your sexual preferences are your business. Someone shouldn't be able to marry a horse just because that is what she is into sexually. Make sense?

typical. whenever someone talks about two adults who want to make a legally binding commitment to love, honor, and obey, someone else always has to bring in animals. the model and precedent for gay marriage is straight marriage. equal marriage does not change the legal standing or lack thereof of animals.

nothing about allowing two adults to marry opens the door to legally sanctioned bestiality. that's as stupid as arguing that if two men can buy and own property together, then a man and a horse can buy and own property together, or if two women can give each other power of attorney, then a woman and a horse can give each other power of attorney. but since you're so convinced it is a plausible threat, go ahead and try it and get back to us.

It is a slippery slope. I am using the horse marriage as a reference because it has been tried unsuccessfully. In Hindu culture it is acceptable for a man or woman to marry a dog or a snake. Is it an equal rights issue if we do not recognize this type of marriage in America? It makes sense to them. Homosexuality is a normal variant to human sexuality, as defined by the AMA and APA. There are many normal variants to sexuality defined by these organizations, including hypersexuality, swapping / cuckolding, and dominant / submissive relationships. Should we consider these normal variants of adult sexuality as eligible for equal rights and equal status? Should a subservient sexual partner be allowed to continue the lifestyle at work and in public? What about bisexuality and ploygamy? Could an innately bisexual person argue that he or she should be able to marry two partners due to his or her sexual orientation? Like I said, it is a slippery slope. Where do we draw the line? Do we stop when we bend to your issues or keep going to be fair and equal to everyone?

i'll try one last time. marriage is a legal contract governed by the laws of the state of ny. if there is an animal species that has been recognized as competent by any court in the US to read, understand, sign, and enter into legal contracts, let's hear it. it would certainly be news to zoologists and theologians.

it's your argument. the burden of proof is on you.
