Lights, Action: Let the Shopping Begin!

Lights, Action: Let the Shopping Begin!

The holiday lights are up on Elmwood. And the Elmwood Village, featuring over 200 shops, restaurants and cultural attractions, has begun its holiday hours.  Most stores are open until 9PM during December, and you can enjoy horse drawn carriage rides on Fridays from 6 to 9:00PM at Bidwell Parkway and Elmwood Avenue.

On Saturdays, Santa Claus strolls down the avenue, stopping in local shops from Noon to 4PM.

Festive music will play from the storefronts, the streetlights and trees are decorated, and best of all, the sidewalks are crowded.

I think carriage rides on Elmwood and Hertel are a wonderful idea...they should offer them downtown and in delaware park.

They really should consider a trolley for Elmwood and Hertel.

So you think that motorists will have any more patience with a carriage on Elmwood then with people on bikes?

arguments for ignoring 'big-box' stores and shopping locally:

Shopping locally keeps money in your local economy - dollars spent in locally-owned business have up to three times the impact on the community as those spent at corporate chains. There is a strong multiplier effect within the community for every dollar spent locally, whether it is for retail goods or services. Every dollar that a community member spends outside the community diminishes the economic health of the community.

agreed. but.... any dollar spent in the city is better than outside. i always made a point, when i lived out of town, to do my christmas shopping the day or two before when i came home. any occasion, i would purchase gifts from buffalo because outside $ going into the city is huge. but you have a fine point. i've found it tough for certain things, though, to buy in the city. sometimes it's just not there.

The Hertel Holiday walk is also this Saturday. Businesses are planning on being open and they are setting the street up with their own carriage rides and festivities.
