HOME Receives Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo Grant

Housing Opportunities Made Equal has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. $20,000 will be utilized for the "Home for HOME Project," and $5,000 to provide free training for landlords in 2010.

The "Home for HOME Project" will save an architecturally significant building on the corner of Main and Ferry Streets in Buffalo. After renovation and new construction, the building will house HOME's offices as well as ten units of energy-efficient, barrier-free, affordable housing. The total cost of the project is $2.7 million. With the help of the $20,000 from the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo, only $125,000 remains to be raised.

Additionally, this grant merges HOME's extensive fair housing knowledge and training capabilities with various elements of the Foundation's Wipe Away Lead Program to effectively provide landlords of Western New York with free training on issues ranging from the initial screening process to a potential eviction.  This grant will provide for training of 240 local landlords.

For more information, or to register for a free landlord training, contact Grace McKenzie at 716.854.1400 ext. 22 or by email.

The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo was established in 1919 to enhance and encourage long-term philanthropy in the Western New York community. Strengthening the region as a center for arts and culture is a key impact area for the Foundation. The Foundation's mission is: connecting people, ideas and resources to improve lives in Western New York.

This is one of the most significant projects for Midtown. It will completely revitalize a nearly dead and neglected corner of Main and Ferry. I can't wait for it to be done.

Is HOME becoming a landlord? Isn't that a conflict of interest?

How so? Their mission is to ensure that tenants do not face discrimination based on race, creed, sex, age, marital status. If HOME is a landlord but is non discriminatory there isn't any conflict that I see. If they were landlords who said, for example: 'these apartments are only for African American tenants', that would be illegal and a conflict, but otherwise I don't see the problem.

Millions of dollars spent by ACORN jr to refab this place and millions more will be spent on what exactly?

To what 'millions more' do you refer? As to this $2.7 large, it buys the rehab you see. If you can do it for less, contact HOME. I'm sure they'd be interested.

As to your insinuation of misdeeds ('acorn jr'): so far as I know there has never been any investigation of HOME claiming any wrongdoing. If you know otherwise, please enlighten.
