Greiner: President Emeritus of UB Passes

Greiner: President Emeritus of UB Passes
William Greiner, the 13th president of the University at Buffalo, who was recently named President Emeritus by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, has died.

Greiner, who spent 13 of his 42 years at the university as president, retired this past October.  Greiner spent the last five years teaching within UB's Graduate School of Education and the UB Law School, where he first began his teaching career in 1967.  Greiner served as president from 1991 to 2004, after a variety of jobs within the university that took him from teaching to administration.

The 75-year-old Greiner was credited with being a very successful fundraiser, helping UB to rise to a Division I athletic school, and co-authoring a book about UB, Location, Location, Location: A special History of the University of/at Buffalo.

This guy was no friend of the city. He deep-sixed the University Heights initiative to help rebuild the neighborhood in favor of building the ugly Swiss Chalet student housing out on Millersport, even after the city gave his dumb son a job in the Planning Department. Is he lying in state in the the lobby of the Amherst Industrial Development Agency's offices?

Show some respect jstraubinger. Many, many people were taught, tutored, and mentored by Bill. He was a class act.I am sure his "dumb son" would find your comment in very poor taste. Personally, as one of his recent UB Law students and as someone who admired the man, I think your tone sucks. Stay classy.

Your right dj. I apologize for the remark about his son and my disrespectful tone. However, he did the city no favors.

My thoughts are with his family. He did a great deal for UB and the community. I had a chance to meet with him a few times while I was at UB and he was always above board and straight forward. I respect that. Remember that Buffalo did not want UB to build in the city and the Heights didn't want the students. The guy did what he had to do and laid the ground work for the builds in Buffalo that are currently underway. Remember that he made the first moves towards purchasing the M.Wile factory that we celebrated last week. Buffalo lost a good friend and a great man.

The often repeated story of "Buffalo did not want UB" is only half true. Many in the city supported the idea, some for the right reasons, some to cash in. There was a lot of debate and many property owners and small business types saw the benefit of hosting the campus.

Conservative business leaders were behind the effort to keep UB out of the city. They failed to recognize the economic potential of such a project.

As far as I understand it, too many people said NOT IN MY BACKYARD.

It was the power brokers in the big business community that shot it down, not some nimby community group.

Suny had Amherst picked out as early as 1960. The city filed a lawsuit to get them to move to one of three urban renewal sites but were unsuccessful. Im sure there were a handful of people who cried NIMBY, especially after the uprisings, but the city tried its best to get UB downtown.

Many in Buffalo support the Peace Bridge plaza too. Some people do not. In the end, the minority is going to win out, just like it did in the case of UB moving to Buffalo.

What makes you think it is a "minority" that are against the truck plaza? The only ones for it seem to be those without roots or commitment to the community, those just wanting to cash out.

Some Buffalonians want the new bridge and the plaza. Some Buffalonians don't care. Some Buffalonians see the protests against it as more NIMBYism. It is difficult to say who is in the majority or the minority. It is safe to say that there are a minority of people who are against it, when compared to all others. This minority is the most vocal because they have the most interest in it not being built. There is no difference between a corporation and a community group stopping development. I know that you might see one being more morally righteous or acceptable, but they are both obstructing development to serve their own self interests.

Of course a community group and a corporation both act out of "self interest". The difference is community is about the greater good, a corporation is about profit. Many see their home and neighborhood as more than an investment, they are rooted and take pride in the place they live.
Protecting old homes and neighborhoods from being destroyed for the profit of others is not "obstructing developement".

You always strive to leave your mark with your life with a positive stamp. Greiner achieved that with his work contributions. I'm sure his family is sad today but proud.

I am sorry, the comments about the Peace Bridge do not belong with this article. I'll take this to a more appropriate thread.

Dr. Greiner did so much to internationalize UB. He expanded international student enrollments and supported the institution's global partnerships. For these efforts alone, UB and our community are all the better. Best wishes to his family.

My condolences to Dr. Greiner's family and friends.

I had the honour of working closely with him when I was with the UB Student Association and writing for the Spectrum. He would stop what he was doing to take the time out to teach and assist. He was never too busy for an interview and was almost always available if you had a question. He was an excellent mentor and teacher and I will never forget all that he has given to me and the community. He did so much to help the people of our community, things that were done quietly and without recognition, because that is how he wanted it. I remember a time when he provided Christmas gifts and dinner to the family of a basketball player whose mother had recently passed. He made the arrangements himself, paid for out of his pocket, and had it delivered anonymously to the family on Christmas Eve. It was signed, "Your UB Community". He did so much for the students and community, I am truly saddened by this news and wish I could do something to carry on his legacy. This is a great loss at so many levels. My thoughts are with his family and close friends on this sad occasion.
