Gift List: Richardson Towers Collectible Snow Globe

Gift List: Richardson Towers Collectible Snow Globe

Chosen in a survey by Buffalo Rising readers, AVALON Design and The Floristry of Buffalo are proud to announce the arrival of their second in a series of collectible snow globes just in time for the Holidays.

Two years ago, this team created the popular Buffalo City Hall Snow Globe, and plans to commemorate more of the area's architectural treasures in the future.  Buffalo Rising readers picked this year's theme overwhelmingly, with 34% of the votes.

The Richardson Towers Collectible Snow Globe is arriving TODAY ~ coincidentally, along with our first snowfall!  This second in a series of collectible water globes commemorates H.H. Richardson's innovative design for the State Insane Asylum at Forest and Richmond Avenues in Buffalo, New York, and is available at The Floristry on Delaware Avenue, and at Avalon's website.

The globe contains a remarkably detailed replica of the administrative towers, which is lit from within.  The hand painted base sculpturally depicts fantasy elements of the Richardson Romanesque style for which the architect is known.

This desktop ornament commemorates the historic architecture of Buffalo, while celebrating our glorious past, with an optimistic eye to the future.  The four-inch diameter glass globe sits atop a polychrome resin base, making the piece just under 6" tall.

The price is $49.95 + tax and applicable shipping.

If your Black Friday was bleak, cyber Monday psyched you out, or your holiday season is already insane - then you'd be just plain crazy not to purchase one of these rare little treasures for someone special on your gift list.

Thanks for posting this; it's a real gem!

If there's any chance that Paul and Mark could collaborate on a Central Terminal globe in the future, I'd be deeply appreciative.

MAX, The central terminal is definitely on our list. We thought it was to similar in shape to city hall to produce them back to back. And, the readers of BR have spoken! ( the Botanical Gardens was a close 2nd) We are open to suggestions and will offer online voting again. S T A Y T U N E D . . .

Thank goodness! We promised my mother-in-law one of these for Xmas last year to match the one we had bought her in 2007. We called for about 6 months before we gave up and bought her something else. Glad to hear it's in- we'll pick one up this week!

Christa, Sorry, we had some problems with manufacturing. It took us awhile to get the quality we were looking for. Enjoy.

Looks great I already ordered mine. I almost missed out on city hall . They sold out fast. I hope they made more this time.

Yes yes. Because nothing says Christmas like the building where the mentally handicapped were once treated like animals. Would've preferred the Central Terminal.

agreed. considering how progressive it was when it was built, it is cheap moral vanity to sneer at it now.

at 1st glance yeah sounds strange, but that's our sordid history. Looking forward we have an architectural gift in our back yard and a financial rewards for years to come. the $100 million given to the complex built the Burchfield Penny, fixed the roof of the towers, and is bringing development including a visitor center, hotel, offices, bike paths etc. Sounds like a gift that keeps on giving to me.

sorry to crimp your rant ~ please click on the link 'H.H. Richardson's innovative design' link in this post:

"This design was representative of what was then known as the Kirkbride Plan, named after the physician who developed it. As a stage of development in the classification and treatment of mental illness, Kirkbride’s system used an architectural response to create a humane treatment environment. This curative system was premised in the belief that one’s physical and social environment could cause and cure mental illness. The Kirkbride Plan was a system of congregate care that classified patients according to affliction and degree, in wards designed for maximum light, ventilation, and privacy, and a home like atmosphere."

...so in fact, this structure can be celebrated for it's majesty AND it's humanity. if Kirkbride was correct, your negativity may be stemming from musty draperies or maudlin bed covers.

Oh heck just because of the strong architectural detail of it I would also be interested in a St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral Globe. It is Christmas time after all.

Jesse, The Floristry on Delaware has a couple city hall globes left. However, they have a bubble in them so they're being sold at a reduced price. I was told they are the only ones left for sale.
