Four Albright Works to be Featured on US Postage Stamps

Four Albright Works to be Featured on US Postage Stamps
We ask every time we buy new stamps: Do you have any with artwork on them?  The clerk opens the stamp drawer and sifts through it, holding up various sheets for approval.  We've come away with Eames chairs, Georgia O'Keeffe paintings, Ansel Adams photographs, and several sheets of a collection of American photography that we really, truly had trouble using because they were so beautiful.  And we miss the Marvel Comics series; Elektra was outrageous! (Guess which bill she went on.)

Now, as a point of pride for the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and therefore, Buffalo, the United States Post Office will be issuing a set of ten abstract expressionist artworks, four of which are part of the Albright's permanent collection.

The new series of stamps will feature Jackson Pollock's "Convergence," Mark Rothko's "Orange and Yellow," Robert Motherwell's "Elegy to the Spanish Republic No. 34" and Arshile Gorky's, "The Liver Is in the Cock's Comb" (left).

The Albright-Knox will host an official public unveiling ceremony at the gallery on March 11.

These stamps will be a great departure from the repetitive images of Norman Rockwell paintings.

I smiled a bit when I saw the title "The Liver Is in the Cock's Comb" on the front page of the Buffalo News yesterday.

The PO did another Pollock stamp a while back. It showed Pollock working on a painting except they photoshopped the cigarette out of his mouth. I have the commemorative plaque that came with it. It's kind of funny, but cool; I should show it to you, Elena.

I am dying to buy these!

You could auction those four paintings and build a new Peace Bridge with the proceeds. Just saying.
