Candidates Night: One Good "Party" to Have Missed

Candidates Night: One Good “Party” to Have Missed
Resigned Ellicott Councilman Brian Davis allegedly lead protest, Democratic Chair Len Lenihan removed for his own safety.

Last week, Ellicott District Council seat hopeful, Marilyn Rodgers, respectfully declined an invitation, in a letter to the existing council members and Democratic leaders, concerning a "Candidates Night" that was held this past Friday.

The December 18th, closed-door forum was held by the Erie County Democratic Party Ellicott District Committee Members, a group that is responsible to provide a vote for approximately 9,000 individual voters.

Considering what happened there, according to this story on Western New York Politics, Rodger's sense may have involved more than a simple wish to remain unbeholden by any one group.

Rodgers had declined the invitation, citing her emphasis on a non-political decision by the Common Council based upon the City of Buffalo Charter - Chapter C, Article 3, § 3-6 of the City Charter of Buffalo, New York on August 22, 2002.  This amendment, according to Rodgers, was approved by the voters at the general election held November 5, 2002, and stamped into law on December 6th, 2006.

In her letter, Rodgers stated: "No where in this legislation is it written that the Council will appoint a successor to the seat by 'rubber stamp.'  I believe, wholeheartedly, that if we do not abide by the original purpose of this legislation, as authored by an individual who was eliminated in his bid for the seat due to the "rubber stamp" of local politics, we do wrong for the people of the district.  Therefore, this morning, I sent a Certified R/R/R letter to Mr. Zellner stating I would not be participating in the forum on Friday."

She continued, "A few individuals in a room that is not accessible by The People are making decisions that will influence the entire Ellicott District and our city, overall.  I have stated I will not seek political endorsements.  This disenfranchises the voting public. Therefore, I do not see the need for attending this closed-door event that perpetuates the politics of the past that have contributed to the stagnation and decay to our city for decades.  This is my way of affecting a small manner of change while keeping my word regarding endorsements."

Most members of the Common Council have stated they are seeking an individual who is independent from political circles.  Rodgers says she wishes to reinforce the Council's intent that is reflected in the City Charter.

Im just going to take a guess here but Im guessing that Marilyn also knows that the Ellicott District Committee representing 9,000 members are mostly black, mostly Brown voters and mostly want Pigeon to be a rubber stamp on the council for Brown which would put Mrs.Rogers on the defensive either with attacks to intimidate her to step aside or political bargains to bribe her to step aside.

For those members of the Buffalo Common Council that represent the rest of the non-african american city revolving around Browns dictates, then I would say Mrs. Rogers just proved that she could stand independently with them.

If Brown continues using the entire city for only the benefit of the african americans then Buffalo will continue down its path to Detroit.

Mrs. Rogers is a vote for a free common council and not a common council that is a rubber stamp for the Mayor. I think she took a great step in proving that with this response.

Obviously Ms. Rodgers is a woman of her word and shows her sincere loyalty to the people of the district. It would be taking steps backward if she were not appointed.

What do you do if you know you have no chance in hell of getting the nod? Bow out and hurl accusations, yeah that's the ticket.

This is a good point...She doesn't lose anything by not showing up, and can now claim to be 'above' politics. [deleted - unfounded claim]

Furthermore, ANY appointee will be a politics based decision, because they WILL be chosen by the majority of the council (anti-brown faction) and that council member will be beholden to them for campaign funding the next election...Because grassroots will sure as sh*t be running someone in 2010 if they don't get the seat this time.

Keep shilling for your girl, BRO...just don't actually come out and support her, because then you'd find have some editorial honesty...

That's the difference between politicians and someone who is trying to do what is right. A stand for what is right is nothing short of courageous. These people who say they represent us are acting like little schoolyard brats. What an embarrassment. Mr. Davis, go home.

City residents should be outraged by the lack of leadership by Byron Brown. The silence by the Brown administration on criminal actions of Brian Davis is disheartening.

Brian Davis is an obstacle to cooperation and unity between black, brown and white folks in this city.

how many other people in that room today actually sat down and read the City's Charter? That should be the first question asked...

Once again Marilyn blazes a trail for others to follow. In case you were on the fence and wondering if this district would be better served by someone simply seeking a stepping stone to the next level of government, um we've experienced that, it didn't work!

Our Mayor must be in a quandary to see this grass roots Ellicott district candidate school the local democratic party on written law that is clearly documented on the City of Buffalo website under the Common Council tab. It would be a belly laugh if it wasn't so pathetic.

One foot in front of the other Marilyn, keep moving!

Sean, good point. At the very least Rodgers has done her homework and has made herself familiar with the laws of the city. Maybe this is something that city employees should probably try some time.
z9icons and Mr Merriweather, no matter what you attempt to hurl she had opted out of this political power play prior to the actual date. Why not ask her what she thinks is right for the district instead of attempting to cast false accusations. Oh, that’s right, she has been the only candidate open enough to answer questions from the public.
How about asking her to divulge her resume to check her qualifications for this position and her current one at Marine Drive? If she doesn’t have any property or housing background she probably doesn’t have the experience needed for her current job. Oh that’s right, she did that and has a wealth of experience in both areas.
It’s too bad the one person showing honesty and integrity here is the one being blasted for working outside the political box. I’m with Peytons Corner, one step in front of the other, we’re behind you, Marilyn.

Having recently had out condo project's tax assessment raised by 250% in the Ellicott District with no representation or justification, I seriously want SOMEONE to call and feel Marilyn Rodgers is by far the best out there.

Thank you Marilyn for reading the Charter and standing up to these people.

Well the political leopard shows its spots. They act like spoiled brats to take the candy from the baby. This is what we pay for? This is what we get. And anybody that tries to go up against them will be slashed with the same type of crap activity. Go Marylin.

The control by politicrats and the politicrat wannabes brings chaos and confusion. This does nothing to assist us who live in Ellicott.

On one hand you have a pastor who may have difficulties separating church and state during key decisions, who is pushing for more real estate in my neighborhood without listening to the people who live here and who is endorsed by the former councilman.

Then you have a number of others that promote their education and titles over the amount of time and effort within Ellicott or even their own neighborhoods. Where were they when we needed help? In their warm little houses.

Then you have a woman who has shunned the politiplays to make sure the people are listened to and given a chance to better their neighborhoods and work across the borders the politicrats seem to want to keep.

So who wins? Probably the politicrats with their politiplays. And who loses? Us.

This is ridiculous. Who are these guys anyway? I never met one and I'm active in my district. The common council better sit up and take notice that us people are watching and we have places like this and all over the internet to make sure thigns go right. More politicians are getting called out for their bad deeds and people aren't going to take it any more. Good for you, Marilin, your standing up for us.

Marilyn's allegiances are not all that clear.

http://blogs.buffalonews.com/outrages_insights/2009/12/a-two-candidate-race-in-ellicott.html

Why do people keep up the myth that Marilyn Rodgers isn't a friend of the Mayor? If she wasn't like by him, she wouldn't have her current job. She also ran in the Grassroots slot of judicial delegates during the September primary, and is even in the group "Grassroots Monthly Meetings" on Facebook. You don't get more Grassroots than that.

MArilyn is as qualified as anyone on the council now. But make no mistake, she is in the Byron camp.

Marilyn,
Your lack of a response answers the question. You are a member of Grassroots.
Your failure to be forthright speaks louder than your diatribes on government.
___________________________________________________

Just a minor correction. Does anyone out there really know who Marilyn Rogers works for. She supposedly works for the Erie Regional Housing Development Corp. as an assistant office manager at the Marine Drive Apts. While it is true that several BMHA higher-ups are on the board of the ERHDC, I don't believe that her salary is paid for by the BMHA. In fact, the only way to get hired for any position at the Marine Drive Apts. is to be connected to the "second floor" or "Grassroots". Marilyn, please, let us know just exactly who signs your paychecks. Not that there is anything wrong with these connections...but please, set the record straight.

Rodgers currently works at the Erie Regional Housing Development Corp. They are the management group that operates the Marine Drive Apartments. The Mayor has a heavy hand in the long-controversial BMHA who owns the apartments.

One blogger wrote “Marilyn Rodgers, aka another vote for Byron Brown, is no longer an activist but a Byron Brown crony. She sold herself along and her integrity when she vowed her allegiance and alliance with the current corrput administration upon accepting her current post, defending his criminal actions and assisting in his re-election.”

Buffalo News Jan 24, 2008

"Common Council Member Brian Davis has a homemade video on YouTube, thanks to Marilyn Rodgers.

Rodgers posted the video -- with scenes from Davis' East Side district set to the song "Wake Up Everybody" -- because she wanted to boost his re-election bid.

"I received a number of e-mails where people were really touched by the video," Rodgers said."

It is easy to tell half of the story. It seems you guys are afraid she has a stronger hold on ethics and integrity. If you just go to the place where you got these you will see she responded to the questions and accusations. We get the politiplays. To bad you have to resort to them.

Good response, RJCN. Going to the link shows someone with a chip on their shoulder trying to bash Marilyn. If you read the whole series, she had responded truthfully and fully and there were a bunch of people with positive comments. I like your words 'politicrats' and 'politiplays' they give the whole picture.
