Buffalo 180

Buffalo 180
BRO: In a nutshell, what is Buffalo 180?

Sara Emhof (Founder): A three year Extreme Makeover for the City. Buffalo 180 will "turn the city around" with community projects and events that celebrate our past and build the future. All inspired by Buffalo's 180th anniversary in 2012. What better birthday present could we offer the City?

BRO: A lot of people say that there are so many activist groups out there doing work in the city, what makes Buffalo 180 so unique and different?

Sara: There are a lot of great groups out there and we look forward to promoting what they are doing. Think of it this way, if Buffalo's future was a house, each of these groups are providing a material that will make the house strong and appealing. Buffalo 180 will invite the community to design and build the "house" that will be the legacy left by our parents and the home to younger generations.

BRO: Did the idea for Buffalo 180 come from the efforts that you have worked on in other cities?

Sara: Buffalo 180 was inspired by other anniversary efforts including Pittsburgh and Oregon. Last year, I saw first hand the positive press and community engagement Pittsburgh was able to create through its 250th anniversary. It immediately got me thinking, when is Buffalo's next big anniversary? The 180th was timely and incredibly symbolic.

BRO: How does one get involved?

Sara: Take the Buffalo 180 survey! www.buffalo180.sparkable.com and pass it on to your friends, coworkers, family.  Our first step is to find out what people think about Buffalo's past and its future.

We are also seeking 180 individuals, groups and businesses to become Founding members of the 180 commission. This commission will help us lead the initiative. Friends from out of town have invested and some are investing as a sports team or other group.  Investment begins at $180! A pretty cool Christmas gift to give too!

BRO: Where do you see this group in five years?

Sara: Well in five years it will be 2014 and our 180th anniversary will be part of our past. Time and our success will determine if there is still a need for a "turn around".

BRO: Since moving back to Buffalo what have you like most?

Sara: Most? The history and the potential. If you look beyond the surface our neighborhoods, they are aching to be reborn and looking to young people to take the reigns.

BRO: Is Buffalo 180 an offshoot of another organization called Indaba Leaders, another group that you founded?

Sara: Indaba Leaders is my own next generation leadership company. I have been coaching students to create positive change in their community and their personal lives for over 10 years. Now it's my turn to apply the process and create positive change in my community. Buffalo 180 is that project. But, I'm sure my young leaders will help me along the way.

BRO: Are there websites for these groups?

Sara: Indaba Leaders www.indabaleaders.com

The Buffalo 180 site is in progress. We will be releasing the results of the survey on our website in January.

Buffalo 180 is an initiative of the non-profit Wellness Institute of Greater Buffalo

For what it's worth, "scheme" has a few definitions. One of them is, "An underhanded plot." Generally, it's a good idea to know what words mean when you use them. Well, it's recommended - but I suppose, in your defense, it isn't required.

reflip, did you notice this part?

"We are also seeking 180 individuals, groups and businesses to become Founding members of the 180 commission. ... Investment begins at $180! A pretty cool Christmas gift to give too!"

First def of scheme (dictionary.com):
"1. a plan, design, or program of action to be followed; project."

It sounds like they have a plan to raise $32,000. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, but it fits the definition.

I wonder how many people would think it's a pretty cool Christmas gift. Reminds me a little of

I really think one of the biggest problems W. New Yorkers face is that everytime we turn around someone else wants to carve out their niche.

I'm racking my brain to try and figure out how we can align all of our goals and set out in a divide an conquer, rather than trying to duplicate efforts.

Also, why does everything seem to require a questionnaire, meeting, etc to identify our problems, aren't they staring us in the face. What Ideas do you have??

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

It shows off the problem with the local/state government. They lack of ability is so great you have things like this doing the functions of government. I'm all for people taking responsibility of there conditions. But as you point out have 10,000 people moving 10,000 ways is not much compared to even 100 unified persons.

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

So what your saying is that increasingly taxpayers are privately paying and volunteering to duplicate functions that we are paying municipal, county and state taxes to perform! ANYONE SEE A PROBLEM HERE?

Celebrating Buffalos 180th anniversary in 2012...please take a backseat. The Historical Society is planning a major national market for the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812, the battle of lake erie, the burning of buffalo...which should major focus on the mouth of the Scajaquada where the old civil war naval yards used to be, where Admiral Perry had is ships built and stocked with war materials, as well as the castle, fort porter, the columbus park demolition for the peace bridge, front park restoration and Niagara Street as an International Gateway entrance to downtown Buffalo.

Somehow this blond with big ego and big ideas wants to clean up the city for the 180th anniversary. How, plant trees? No, we have Retree Buffalo! How, cleanup our rivers? No we have Buffalo Riverkeepers? How, restore our parks? No, have Olmsted Parks Restoration Plan for that! I know have historic buildings? Only one left is the Statler and that sounds beyond her. Community Gardens? Nope taken! Neighborhood Associations & Community Associations to restore our urban neighborhoods? Nope taken! Erie Canal & Waterfront? Taken! Light Rail and Transportation? Taken!

Seems like this legally blonde wanna be leader simply doesnt want to be a team player but is looking for a bunch of followers to build her own platform. Hey not criticizing but just calling it as I see it.

Might have more respect if she came back to Buffalo with a mission to support what was already here before branching out on her own agenda.

Oh and typically...special anniversaries, particularly for cities etc, are done in 25 year increments which doesnt make 180 years much more special than 181 years.

However, 200 years of the 1812 war has national and international significance. There would be nothing more than the 13 colonies if the British had not nearly bankrupted themselves securing the ohio river vally from the French and Indians. The unfortunate repurcussions for that war would eventually lead to our own revolutionary war as the colonists refused to pay for their liberation of their French neighbors and Indian allies, further the British promised the Indians that they would not settle the Ohio River Valley and the Great Lakes and that was another reason for the revolutionary war as every one of the colonists rich and wealthy landowners had already started to purchase land there. It also set the stage for the end of the French Colonies in Florida and the Louisiana Purchase. The national threat of our western frontier made Buffalo/Niagara Falls and the Erie Canal of strategic important!...ALL THIS AND OUR CITY BUFFALO AS THE GATEWAY TO THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY, THE DEFENSE OF THE GREAT LAKES, THE SUCCESS OF THE WAR OF 1812 AND THE EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR...ALL HAD SEEDS IN OUR LITTLE OUTPOST OF A TOWN!

I have followed this blog and website for many years, and admittedly this is my first post, but after reading these posts, I feel compelled to respond to pretty much every single one of you who have posted something before me. I happen to personally know Sara Emhof and her passion for the City of Buffalo and the Western New York region is beyond anything I've ever experienced.

You people disgust me for being so quick to pass judgment on someone who is just beginning their quest to improve the region. She is not simply looking for "followers", or looking to build her own name... God forbid somebody should want to make a difference and improve the Town they love and want to be in and rediscover. You all should be thankful that someone in the AGE GROUP YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO TARGET ON THIS WEBSITE IS ACTUALLY SHOWING INTEREST IN THE REGION, UNLIKE ALL YOUR CHILDREN WHO ARE FLEEING WESTERN NEW YORK FOR GREENER PASTURES.

I knew there was a reason I moved to NYC.

Truthfully, I'd be first in line to support her.

Oh, and KarlMalone, you should consider moving out of your parents basement and get a life.

My personal take is we have enough of these groups. Lego mentions a few, there’re actual quite many others. How many groups alone are having “idea” functions this week alone. Is it good to care, yes, was comment out of line, yes as well. I’m on the front line of international economic development everyday to assist the region. Another group: great more fragmentation, more dilution. I’m sure she cares, I’m glad she cares. There are enough organizations focused on the exact same topic, why do we need another? Unless she is pushing her business interest, which is just fine by me, but it also opens the door the criticism above. There are a million ways to help the region through existing organizations, associations, non-profits (hell that’s all this town is). So great she started another, good for her, let’s award her a prize. Send it via Fed-ex from NYC.

She may have the best of intentions, but asking people who've never heard of her for $180 donations before the group has done anything sounds strange. Oh wait, sorry, not donations but "commissions".

The group's survey at that link sounds mostly more cheerleaderish than useful for anything.

Maybe eventually there will be more substance, but there doesn't sound like much yet - "A three year Extreme Makeover for the City. Buffalo 180 will "turn the city around"... ", and her answer really didn't explain how it's different from any other group. Maybe they don't know yet, which is ok but then they shouldn't be surprised or offended when people ask questions.

Yes, breaking the unions has done wonders for America, just look at all the jobs we have that pay up to $9/hour. It is much better to have the taxpayers subsidize low wage workers through medicaid, food stamps, heap, and a multitude of other programs. Can you imagine the pain the elite wealthy class would feel if workers were paid a fair wage? Driving down labor costs has resulted in a permanent underclass that would make any third world nation proud.

$15-$20/hour or about 30k-40k per year. I am not advocating for the extreme high end of union wages such as in the days of Bethlehem Steel, just a decent wage for a days work. We as a society should ensure that any full time worker has the ability to pay their own way without government programs that in effect subsidize the employer.

There are no private sector unions left that are a threat to the national economy. It used to be that breaking the unions was a 60 national security goal and it was because they challenged the President of the United States. The railroad unions shut down the country until FDR used WWII to nationalize them stating security purposes. Steel attempted to shut down the US economy under Eisenhower so Eisenhower open the nation to Steel imports....the list goes on Truckers under Hoffa and organized crime and now the truckers union is dead because the country has been opened to Mexican and Canadian Trucks under NAFTA.

I dont have a problem with unions and I like them in companies but the real issue is that many of the purposes of unions were taken over by government agencies many years ago.

As we see from bankrupt states like California and New York as an example. The only unions that must be broken up are civil service unions including teachers who have grown into a 4th branch of government and their demands legislated upon the taxpayer. Demands that suck all the investment out of infrastructure and the private sector for the expansion of government payroll and excessive benefit packages.

Through her work with Leadership Buffalo, Sara has already done the job of working alongside important people in the community on every level. Through her coordination of Youth Leadership Buffalo (http://www.buffalorising.com/2009/04/youth-leadership-taking-applications.html), Sara is responsible for giving legions of young people a glimpse of the City of Buffalo that most don't see - through government, business and education. She's brought these kids to the behind-the-scenes sources that show them how a city works (how many people know that before they graduate high school?), and given them a reason to come back - while they have formulated their own solutions to problems they see.

If a turn-around is on it's way (would we be here if we didn't believe that?), Sara is perfectly poised to receive back those people she's worked with - her mentors, her peers and those she's mentored - to bring her plan to fruition. To put a finer point on it, Sara has done her share of investing in the future of Buffalo through the people in it.

Compared to the relatively minute number of naysayers, Sara has many believers. The kind of misery that loves company isn't going to find it in her; she'll be out there getting a job done that she started years ago.

Elena>"to bring her plan to fruition"

It sounds like overselling to describe her plan as an "Extreme Makeover for the City" and to say it will "turn the city around" with community projects and events.

Maybe pointing that out is naysaying, or maybe it's useful feedback to consider. Usually it's better to under-promise and over-deliver than the reverse. At least she might want to describe the projects and events that would be an EM and turn-around for the city if she seriously thinks she has that kind of plan.

She should plant for Buffalos 200 anniversary...but then once again another existing organization will be doing that

Buffalo's 180th is meaningless and is the same date as the anniversary of the WAR OF 1812, THE BATTLE OF BUFFALO, THE DEFENSE OF LAKE ERIE BY ADM PERRY. IT BRINGS UP SIGNIFICANT MARKERS LIKE THE CASTLE, FORT PORTER, FRONT PARK, BLACK ROCK, BUFFALO, THE OLD NAVAL YARDS AT THE SCAJAQUADA, NIAGARA STREET AND PEACE BRIDGE

Still say...her Buffalo 180...just doesnt fit with Buffalo. If she has that much energy and leadership then she should join an existing organization, put it in her career unless she is using the creation of a volunteer organization that requests 180 dollar commissions (for what exactly?) and/or get a man and have a baby.

WHAT are the "community projects and events that celebrate our past and build the future??" Please give specifics, and please show how this ISN'T duplicating existing volunteer services.

HOW much does Sara Emhof know about Buffalo, and WHY is she the best person to lead this "comission?"

I gladly accept any person that wants to help Buffalo, but $180 donations to any of the excellent existing organizations is a far quicker way to pump money into the city than to finance "Founding members of the 180 commission."

She does state there are a lot of organizations out there but that her group will be directing these organization to build the methaphorical house. 180 is the project manager, the group to get all the other pieces moving, the ringleader, the conductor. They will give the marching orders. At this point it might be best for PUSH and Reuse to just stop what they are doing and wait for the 180 memo.

Now we just need a not for profit to manage 180. Maybe someone can start 190, or maybe just call it redundacy

Yup...Im strong enough to be President, CEO etc...but Im not strong enough to bear the equal responsibilities of selective service, military service, reproductive equality, marriage, parenting or self defense...oh and as a feminist I must have my own government agency "Bureau of Affairs of Women and I must have my own gender specific hospital "Womens and Childrens Hospital" and I must have my own gender specific clubs like "Women in Business" while at the same time attacking anything that is gender specific to the male gender as hateful, mysogenistic, sexist, prejudiced, etc.

Isnt feminism lovely!

Give me the days prior to feminism...the women who settled the 13 colonies, who settled the great lakes and the prairies, who settled the west coast and north west and the woman who manned the factories in world war two and then gave up their jobs for their returning GIs that defended this nation. None were victims and all did it with their husbands and families. Give me the christian women who alongside men built schools, colleges, hospitals, hospices, orphanages, shelters etc. None were victims. All did it in partnership with the male gender.

But today, the stench of hypocrisy of women chiefs who defend abortion and euthanasia, defend their special rights and silence the words of criticism through the laws of victimization...well...sorry...but Buffalo180 just smells like more hypocrisy and stench of empty feminism.
Thats my opinion...

your assumption is...that only a man would stand against the evils, the culture of death as Pope John Paul called it, of feminism.

On the contrary, there are plenty of both the male and female persuasion that stand against the evils and hypocrisies of feminism.

Further...and you yourself cannot defend such culture of death hypocrisies without mirroring your own hate in a pitiful attempt to deligitimize those with whom you have no justifiable defense.

I have a right to my beliefs and I have a right to believe in what I think are evil political ideologies that as Margaret Thatcher would agree with Reagan that feminism like communism "belong on the trash heap of humanity"

I owe nothing to Women's Lib.
Margaret Thatcher

Again, have a nice day...the attempt by feminism to stand apart, separate, superior to the male gender and stand superior to 2000 years of christian principles through victimization and hypocrisy and special rights is both evil and against everything I will ever believe.

But you in your ignorance may justify your feminism as if feminism is only an issue that a man would condemn because it is outside your realm of possibilities that a woman would stand against the evils of feminism but that is purely your own conceit and hubris.

WOW, this comment thread really took a turn for the worse. My initial comment in wanting specifics was in hopes that Sara would follow a BR article about her, the way Marilyn Rogers follows the articles. I hoped maybe she would actually fill in the blanks for us a bit.

Elena tried to defend her, but you can't defend a question. There was never an accusation that she can't get it done, I just thought she may have some initial ideas on how to get it done, before the website goes up, and the survey is complete.

Maybe the story was a bit premature, perhaps BR should've just posted the survey and said here, go fill this out. The fact that she mentioned that they wanted money before they developed a plan was probably a big mistake too. At any rate, I took the survey, here's to hoping it helps!

Thanks, 2roadsdiverged, for trying to divert the thread back to constructive criticism.

After hearing the piece on 180 this morning on the NPR Roundtable, I'm even less knowledgeable of what Buffalo 180 seeks to accomplish and how it intends to do so. The absence of a full-fledged organizational website or other publicity materials makes it kind of hard to take it too seriously -- and while I don't doubt the interest Ms. Emhof has in "turning the city around," but I would like to see some more details.

The survey doesn't seem to have much purpose other than morale-boosting and collecting an email list.

All that said, I have no idea how this thread devolved into a "discussion" of feminism ... what the hell, Christine?
