Allen Street Hardware Cafe

Allen Street Hardware Cafe
It was one of those dark winter nights, when the day is done late, the cupboard is nearly bare, and all you want is good food, fast.

We ducked into Hardware.  It was darkly cozy inside, with patrons lining both bars, and a few people seated - we'd beat the evening rush.  The walls at Hardware are regularly covered with a rotating display by local artists, and the glow of low-lit halogen tracks were just enough to enjoy the art, see our menu, our food and give a soft glow to the orange walls.  It was comfortable to say the least.

The menu had everything from burgers to lobster tails, and we decided on a few sandwiches, red wine for me and a soda for my daughter.

I got the buttermilk fried chicken breast decked out with lettuce and tomato and a side of fries.  It was tender and delicious.

Sometimes, fries are just a good excuse to eat ketchup, but these are good all on their own.

Bella had a BBQ chicken breast with carmelized onions and a double order of mac and cheese, so she was sure to have some left for breakfast the next day.

She made yummy sounds at first bite.
This is a person who judges a restaurant by the quality of their mac and cheese, and she wasn't disappointed.  Whenever it comes out hot, broiled in its own dish to give the top layer a crunchy coating, she's happy.

We saw people we knew as the dining room started to fill - seems you always do at Hardware - and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal.  Hardware is a good place to eat, chat, network, and on many nights - though much later - owner Mark Goldman brings in a variety of bands that rock the former hardware store.

When all was said and done, we were sated, had some good conversation between ourselves and with friends we saw.  The bill, with tax, came to $31, and we left with a little package filled with tomorrow's breakfast.

Sure, we could have gone to the grocery store instead, but this was such a nice treat for two chilly and hungry people.  And at Hardware, it's always come as you are.

Love this place, always have a great time there. Even when it's busy the bartenders are attentive, which I appreciate.

Funny to see "Allen Street Hardware" as a bar. When I first moved to Buffalo, it was a real hardware store, and provided me with an incredible array of first-time-on-my-own stuff: from a reconditioned vintage toaster ($20, prolly worth $120 now and still works) ,pots & pans , used bed frames, a kitchen table & chairs, etc etc. They used to refurbish old stuff & resell - very helpful for poor students out on their own.

Mac and Cheese is the best here and affordable to.

I guess if you are a patron you have a different take on the Hardware. I live in the neighborhood and get to see the cluttered sidewalk that you have to walk single file to get past. The stinking garbage totes that you get to smell and look at on the sidewalk 24/7. Even now the summer planters are sitting on the sidewalk against the building along with the umbrella bases. So while he may provide a great night out for some, the owner certainly isn't the best neighbor to have.

The cons to be weighed against more numerous pros of living in a bar-entertainment district.

The same can be said about your opinion of the planned Peace Bridge expansion

If the bars conspired to demolish the surrounding neighborhood for truck parking that would be a fair comparison.

Submitting your neighbors to foul smelling garbage and using the sidewalk as storage is not being very neighborly.

True and I do love living here but how much effort would it take to find a place to store your "out of season" goods and garbage totes. Ever since the garage (where the totes were kept) was turned into the back room the garbage totes have sat on the sidewalk in plain view. Don't garbage totes have to be out of site? I know mine have to be stored in the rear of my house out of site. You can get a variance to keep them in the open, which I’m sure has been done. It is an eyesore and no homeowner in the neighborhood would be allowed to do it. On the plus side the paint job and the new windows in the front look great.

I walk past it too. I live about a half block from there. Maybe we need to sit down with them and talk it out. Has anyone approached them yet?

Really? You live down the street from this place, your biggest gripe is garbage cans and you’ve chosen to air your petty complaints by commenting on this article? I live a half a block from Hardware. I was here long before it opened and consider it an asset to my neighborhood. Before opening that end of Allen was a place I avoided after dark. Get out from talk to your neighbors before bashing them anonymously.

When the ownership of an establishment is conscientious enough to respond to community concerns on an internet site's comment section, it shows the level of quality and attention that must have went into that establishment. This is only possible by local ownership and open minded leadership. Kudos Hardware, you have my business.
