WNED's "Elbert Hubbard : An American Original" Tonight

WNED’s “Elbert Hubbard : An American Original” Tonight

Tonight is the national premier of WNED-TV's latest national production, "Elbert Hubbard : An American Original" on PBS and WNED-TV at 10 PM.  Hubbard's turn of the 20th century Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora was at the forefront of a movement that rejected mechanized industrialism and emphasized hand-crafting simple designs for everyday objects.

A colorful and often controversial figure, Hubbard was an influential author, publisher, lecturer and entrepreneur, who attracted master craftspeople as well as numerous dignitaries to the Roycroft campus, 20 minutes from Buffalo.

The one-hour documentary presents the fascinating life story of Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), the flamboyant founder of the Roycroft.  In the production, Hubbard is narrated by actor Liev  Schreiber, the voice of Hubbard is provided by Adam Arkin and the musical score was written by Michael Bacon.  The film was produced, directed and written by WNED Senior Producer Paul Lamont, who also produced WNED's "Frank Lloyd Wright's Buffalo" for PBS.  "[Hubbard's] is a story of love, art, passion and controversy set against the backdrop of the Arts and Crafts Movement," according to Lamont.

"You may not approve of everything Hubbard did," said Lamont, "but I think people will be able to relate to the contradictions that were part of his personality as well as his personal and professional struggles during a very turbulent and transitional time in America.  I tried to create an artistic film that mirrored the artistic qualities of Arts and Crafts and tell the best possible story.  By virtue of that, I think people will want to experience Roycroft for themselves."

The nonprofit Roycroft Campus Corporation (RCC) is now restoring the original multi-building complex ― a National Historic Landmark and the nation's only authentic Arts and Crafts community that still draws people from far and wide.

WNED's adds the Hubbard piece to its catalog of recent national productions or co-productions including Frank Lloyd Wright's Buffalo (2006), Niagara Falls (2006), The Adirondacks (2008), Fort Niagara: The Struggle for a Continent (2004), Window to the Sea (2005)and The Marines (2007). Projects on the Chautauqua Institution and The War of 1812 are currently in development.

Yes. But that's not the campus. That's the Roycroft Inn across the street. It's a view of the entrance and the Pergola. All of which are built where Hubbards house once stood.

The Roycroft Inn is indeed part of the campus, as it was opened to accommodate all of the artisans who traveled there. Also, the porch you see in the picture is actually known as a "Peristyle"…not a pergola.

well thank you for clarifying that...I just dont remember seeing the Peristyle before...

I wonder if they there will be as much interest in rebuilding the house as there is for the rebuilding the Larkin Administration Building...they are trying to restore the campus.

Though, I would really like to see the Roycroft Campus expand into something nationally and globally recognized with manufacturing of all sorts of arts and crafts and furniture. Roycroft should be everybit the brand as Stickley and the Roycroft Campus and its artisans should try to fulfill that dream of human scale arts and crafts for the public consumption.

You're the only one that wants to rebuild the Larkin Building.

How far we have come as a nation from a time when we made everything...to a time when we can only reminisce about making something.

Sad but true.. I have thought and said that many times in the last 10 years or so..

The Roycroft Campus (RC)is currently experiencing plenty of activity as of late. With the completion of Main Street/20A in EA new stone walls which surrond the campus and facing Main Str. have been restored using the original stone material. Also a new RC information center/green space is being built on the left hand corner of South Grove Street; which replaces an out of place circa 1960s one story building which was just demolished. If you haven't stayed overnight and/or come for dinner at the Roycroft Inn please make some time to come and visit. This part of the campus is beautifully restored both inside and out. Some other RC new, the new power house will be built to restore the lost RC power house which burned down in 1997. Lastly the Town of EA will be moving their operations out of the original RC campus citadel and that building will eventually be restored as well. As for Hubbard, he is a fascinating figure to say the least. Before he formed the Roycrofters and initiated the Arts and Crafts movement in the US he was a major figure in the sales and marketing program behind the Larkin’s Sweet Home Soap Co. in downtown Buffalo. With all that said I believe just like the Darwin Martin House in Buffalo, the RC restoration if successful will be just another historical landmark and architectural treasure for all of WNY to take pride in:)

orlanmon,
what is the future for the Roycroft Campus? or should I say, what are the plans to expand more onsite arts and crafts and even have some nearby limited scale manufacturing and production...not on the scale of stickley...but Roycroft could certainly handle limited editions...to expand on that wonderful name: ROYCROFT!

Christine.. I do not know all of the details but I can tell you that they are planning an number of things. The Copper Shop will be restored and used as an artisan exhibit space and workshop. The soon to built Power House to replace the original in design but not function will serve as: visitor center, gift shop, administrative offices, and classrooms. The Furniture and Leather complex is currently being used for a mixture of things. Roycroft pottery artisan in the basement, custom picture/framing/Roycroft shop on the top floor, and the middle two floors are nothing but antiques. This campus has plenty of potential for restoration and reuse as central place where all RC artisans can show their goods. I think the momentum in the last 7 years since I have lived in EA things are starting to take shape.
As for the limited scale manufacturing and production; I have not seen or heard in the local EA news of any of the local artisans in EA pursuing small scale mass production of RC goods. Everything is completed in shops through out EA and the US and two times a year an RC Festival is held where all RC artisans show off their goods. Alhtough this is not currently happening I think you bring up a great point why not buy mass produced RC furtinure, copper pieces, pottery that is made right here in EA NY; the very place where the Roycroft movement started. EA is also home of Fisher Price Toys and in 1992 they moved all their manufacturing to Mexico and then of course Fisher Price was bought by Mattel. How great would it be to once again give skilled manufacturing jobs to WNYers making Roycroft goods. If the general consumer market will not bite because of pricing how about for commerical use; offices, banks, hotels.. etc.. We live in different times; now to some extent almost nothing is made here:/ Regardless if you have time come to EA and check out what is happening on the campus and I have included the Winter RC Festival Link if your interested.
