Parker-Hertel Sign Update
As promised in "One Sweet Corner" yesterday, here's a photo update on the Hertel side of the property. Luckily, the weather held out today for some good sign painting progress.
We promise to keep you updated on the billboard mural and the Parker sign. In the meantime, we hear nothing but good about Butter's Bistro, so you can expect a food post on that soon. One thing we do know is that Butter's serves up homemade mac and cheese with a Cheez-It crispy topping. That's got to be crunchy good!
In the meanwhile, if anyone happens to get there before we do, consider sending your own user review to us. With all the great restaurants in this city, we can't get to all of them, and we'd love to see some reader reviews!

So the Bagel place is going to be in its own space? I thought they were going to only be available Saturdays in the sweet shop. Even better news.

Is this the corner with that GOD-AWEFUL eyesore CHECKERS??? That dirt hole needs to go so that neighborhood can flourish!!! Attention neighbors...GET CHECKERS OUT OF THERE and see how nice the corner will get, especially in the summer. :)

What do you have against Checkers?
November 20, 2009 10:04 PM
Typical BRO comment. Checkers is an institution that has been around at least 60 years.
In that time it has witnessed many other businesses come and go - yet it survives.
It is also home to the legendary Checkers Athletic Club running team. It IS Buffalo.
However, in YOUR worthless opinion, it doesn't fit with neighbors, that have barely opened - therefore it should "go".
Why don't you invest in a set of Legos and become master of your own domain.

WHOA. Back off on the hating! And learn how to spell. Checkers belongs in the same place it's been for decades.
November 20, 2009 10:00 PM
Ok, First of all Checkers isn't as bad looking as it smells. I went there a few times, and both times it smelled like an out house, and I'm being generous. I'm not for tearing down the bar, just maybe a little sprucing up, and some maintenance on their basement or sewer problem.

Seconded, thirded and so on! I read the review of Checkers in the Bar issue of Buffalo Spree and assumed the writer must have spent a night out at an alternate universe Checkers. How could they go there and not see the inside for what it was. Oh, I realized someone named Nancy had written the article. Clearly she hadn't had the distinct pleasure of visiting the men's room. (And to those who point shoot reply, I was NOT making a derogatory comment in any way shape or form about women or women writers, people who use women's rooms or Buffalo Spree staff...).
.
Oh yeah, and it would help if there was far less open drug dealing in the joint.
.
So yeah, a sign, a plumber and an awning might make a world of difference at that "venerable" institution.

Checkers is a bad neighbor. Their sidewalk is always littered with cigarette butts and people are constantly walking down my street at 4am with open containers yeliing. I don't even want to go to Butters Bistro after dark due to all of the leering drunks.

Thats too bad. The neighborhood tavern ought to be a place where the community gets together not a source of disruption. Lets hope the owner and some of their patrons are reading this and clean up their act.

Are you sure they aren't coming from the Colonie?

Same issues as Chippewa Street, it's nothing but DRUNKS, fights and stupid people. Oh, wait, back to the issues about Checkers.

I stopped in to Buffalo Artscape on the day it opened and was pleasently surprised. The art work is excellent and I was impressed by the amount of items for sale. I bought a few items for gifts and then went back a few weeks later to purchase another item for a gift. The prices were very resonable and I am going to go back and buy some Christmas gifts for those people on my list that have everything. It's time I put some culture into their lives. The handmade art from around the world goes with any decor and is sure to be a conversation starter. This is going to be a regular stop on my route to see what is new in the offering.

after reading some responses to my first post about checker's I se ei am not the only one that thinks they ARE a bad neighbor. The actual location has potential, but the ownership allows asses to disrupt the neighborhood at 4am and litter, puke, key cars, and yes urinate all over the sidewalk! Yes, this happens! Again, the actual location could be a grea tplace for a tavern, but these idiots running the joint are clueless. With the new attention now focused on this corner and the potential people now see....TIME WILL TELL EVERYTHING. They can either shape up, or a start packing. :) Cheers.

Butter made his famous man-n-cheese for our wedding picnic, it IS crunchy goodness. It was a huge hit, and Butter is a great guy and super funny. Try his joint out, you won't be dissapointed!
