Bartel's passion and appreciation for art have developed immensely since he was a small child. An artist himself, Bartel was motivated to open Buffalo Artscape after his eleven years of teaching at colleges and universities, including University of Buffalo and Buffalo State College. His teaching career inspired him to "expand [his] role as an artist in the community." Associate Director Melanie Glucksman helped Bartel transform his vision for the gallery into a reality.
Buffalo Artscape is an outlet for local, national and international artists to exhibit their work. Currently, Bartel's own exhibit "21st Century Landscapes Revisited" is being displayed in Artscape's gallery. The series of paintings and drawings "deals with things that can only be seeing using current technology," Bartel said. This technology includes microscopes, telescopes and computers. So, these images were ultimately inspired the collection, which will remain in the gallery until Nov. 29th.
Buffalo Artscape offers art aficionados a wide and diverse range of art to choose from. In addition to paintings and drawings, the store also sells jewelry, ornaments, cd's, fair trade handicrafts and more. These items originate from all over the world, including Mexico, China, Africa and Bali. The store sells unique pieces as well, including Navajo sand paintings and recycled gifts.
Bartel is optimistic about the future. He hopes the Buffalo Artscape will soon offer fine arts and crafting classes. Bartel and Glucksman are always on the lookout for new and interesting art pieces. The gallery advertises in Artvoice and Facebook, looking for artists to send samples of work.
Artscape's next exhibit, "Perspective" by Patti Harris will open Dec. 4th from 7PM to 10PM and remain open until Dec. 31st. The event is free and open to the general public. Light refreshments will be served.
If you'd like to have your artwork, crafts or music looked at/heard by Buffalo Artscape, contact by mail, email (buffaloartscape@yahoo.com) or phone. Bartel said everything submitted is examined/listened to, but this doesn't guarantee a place in the gallery or store.
