EMHE: "Thrilled" by Community's Response

EMHE: “Thrilled” by Community’s Response

Kim Lewis, Art Director for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, has a message for Buffalo: "Thank You!"  Lewis oversees the design team for the show, including the architecture, exteriors and interior room themes for the kids.

"Working in the Buffalo community has been a true privilege," said Lewis.   "I feel honored to be a part of such a powerful movement through this community. Everywhere you look, neighbors are helping neighbors."

"Buffalo has truly captured the spirit of our show and taken it to the extremes like nothing we've seen before," Lewis continued.  "Our show and crew are only a small part of the success of this week."

"Thank you for the opportunity to serve the great people of Buffalo!" she said.  "EMHE has been so thrilled with the response from this community."

The architecture isn't the point of this house. Sustainability, the ability for this family to be able to afford their new utilities and taxes, and the ability for the plan to be replicated throughout Buffalo's neighborhoods are the questions at hand.

It was said that Byron Brown had asked EMHE to design a home that could be a model for in-fill throughout the city. Does anyone know if EMHE is going to be willing to disclose things about the project that homeowners can replicate themselves.

I'd be interested in what types of plants they are utilizing for the landscaping? They're supposed to be native, and low maintenance.

Manski, you have 5 comments on this story already- 4 of which are negative, and the other fishing for someone to agree with you.

I think even the biggest Buffalo hater has to find some good in this story, no?

The picture is of the OLD house, not the one that was just built.

"Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in."

EMHE has shown Buffalo that we can accomplish much without huge corporations moving in to employ and exploit our people. Volunteers keep us grounded and let us know that a dedicated group of individuals focused on a single goal can move mountains and change our city. Thank you to all who volunteered, you epitomize what Buffalo is all about.

I am, as always, very proud of the people of Buffalo. We are the ones who get things done, not our PAID political representatives - who then take all the credit.

Thank you to the people of Buffalo for doing us proud!

Amazing what pulling together will do. If we could all just lay down our swords for a moment and realize the wisdom and power of working together - what an amazing set of accomplishments we could perform.
.
Why wait for others to do what needs to be done?
.
Why wait for the blessing of the few for any project?
.
And, when you run up against a roadblock, turn the page on the atlas for the detour rather than *****ing, pissing and moaning about how things are so unfair.
.
Like the ad says, folks, just do it!
.
Lay down your swords and partner with one another for the greater good.
.
We have the city and first and second ring suburbs. Neighborhoods are a lot like that. And even though it didn't happen on your own block, this project affects all of us in a great and marvelous way.
.
Don't let the momentum die. Partner up now and overcome the obstacles.

This is not the first time you have inspired others, MRodgers. Your efforts have had a positive effect on many here in Buffalo, myself included. It feel good to roll up your sleeves and get involved in the community and make changes. Thank you for leading by example. I hope more people follow your lead.

Great project, and a nice house. I REALLY like that they worked to come up with a new design that still will fit in typical city lots. Density is what allows our businesses to thrive and communities to be walkable. Houses like this could be used around the city to help bring new life onto streets without completely changing their appearance.

Business in Buffalo is not thriving, and the 'dense' areas are not walkable. I live on the West Side, on a 30 foot lot, yet the nearest decent grocery is over a mile away (via a pedestrian unfriendly route), nearest drug, hardware, variety stores - all over a mile. Even the nearest crummy corner store is almost a mile round-trip. Density=nirvana only in some parts of cities like NYC or Chicago. In Buffalo, you need a car and a place on your property to keep it, if you want a decent life.
