Buffalo Powder Keg Festival

Buffalo Powder Keg Festival
The fact that Buffalo really doesn't have a winterfest is kinda bizarre. After all, cities like Quebec and Montreal pride themselves on their winter wonderlands. A couple years back, Labatt took a stab at a pond hockey tournament. Now moving into its third year, the event has captured the imaginations of people who actually want to celebrate winter. This year the event will be held in conjunction with another big one on February 27th and 28th.

Recently, there has been an additional festival in the works that organizers (myself included) are in the midst of planning. For now, it's being called the Buffalo Powder Keg Festival - to pay homage to both the snow as well as our history of brewing. You could also say that the image of a powder keg harkens back to the era when our city was both turbulent and volatile... some might say that we still are in that state. But it's an exciting time and those fighting the good fight continue to push the envelope. Powder Keg even plays on the War of 1812.

With the support of Pearl Street Brew Pub, HSBC Bank, Labatt and others, the Powder Keg Festival will take place in and around the streets of the Pearl Street Brew Pub (same weekend as pond hockey). The plan is to have a number of different sites including the plaza surrounding HSBC Tower, multiple levels of the Pearl Street Brew Pub, neighboring parking lots, the Erie Hills people park under the skyway ramp and the encompassing street grid (that will hopefully be closed to traffic for those two days). It is also our hope to possibly utilize the Seneca Street exit from the 190 as a tubing hill. The exit will most likely be closed to traffic due to surrounding street closures.

There will be plenty of festivities planned for those two days - some of the ideas being bandied about are: Ice sculptures, snowman building contests, sleigh rides, a snow maze, hot cider booths, hot pretzels and peanuts, sledding hills, live music, snow queen contest, toboggan pulls, festival of lights, a bike race, tubing, a parade, 5k snow run, snow shoveling contest, sorority/fraternity igloo building, fireworks, snow shoeing, pancake breakfasts, curling demonstrations, a festive ball, ice snow globes, chili contest... The festival will be family friendly, with a variety of chalet inspired retreats including the wrap-around decks of the Pearl Street Brew Pub that would mimic ski chalet decks.

At this point we are looking for people who are interested in participating or volunteering for the festival. We have selected 40 images from winter festivals around the world that we feel lend themselves to our downtown event footprint. If you have suggestions we want to hear them. Also, if you have a group of people, such as a business or organization, let us know and we can brainstorm levels of involvement. I can be reached at Newell@BuffaloRising.com.

Seems like you risk having melted ice and no snow when you push this to so late in winter. What gives with that?

I think this is a great idea. Use that whole area from Red's to Pearl St. Its great seeing hundreds of people down there for Sabres games, Harbor Concerts, etc.

Hopefully the weather cooperates, i remember last year being warmer than expected and the hockey tournament being played on slush. That could be bc its so late in Feb. Either way should be very exicting.

I think if you could incorporate a luge course, starting at the top of the skyway, down to the foot Pearl St Brewery, that would really complete the concept. Also a ice funnel from the top deck down to the street to pour beer and booze into for the reverers passing by.

Rock the F on with this one guys! About time, and the Seneca ramp tubing hill is the best idea among 'em.

Some of us note that you didn't actually say when you're planning the festival (the end of Feb is the pond hockey tourney). I don't care when it is.

he does say "there will be plenty of festivities planned for those two days" We're assuming "those two days" are the two days mentioned for hockey.

But anyway, winter weather is tricky here. We get January and February thaws at random times, and some winters just aren't as cold or snowy as others.

This is DEFINITELY a good idea though. I always thought it was stupid that a city like buffalo does nothing to celebrate the winter!

The weather thing is tough. February 27 & 28 are late enough where you know for sure the lake will be frozen over enough to give it a safe depth of ice. If you were do it too soon the ice cover might be to new and not that thick. The problem is though that is also the time we start to see some stretches of warm periods which gets the slushy top on the built up ice. That is the problem you deal with when you have a hockey tournament on a huge lake. You just have to hope its going to be a crazy winter. I can bet you this one will be.

It wasn't many years ago that Buffalo had a winter festival. The organizers seem to have given up after several years of cancelling events due to, you guessed it, lack of snow. The trucking-in of snow for it made the national news.

It was scheduled for President's Day weekend.

A celebration of winter should go on nor matter the weather. But prepare.

This sounds like a great idea. I would luv to help in this.

I wish you all the luck. This has been tried many times over the years by the City and many other groups. If memory serves, Winterfest has been canceled or postponed due to good weather and lack of snow / ice far more often than it has taken place. I remember the one year when we built the downhill skiing hill in Buffalo and it was only open a handful of days due to temperatures in the high 30s or low 40s, too warm to make snow worth skiing or sledding on. There was the ice sculpture contest that was scaled back to include only professional artists because of lack of snow, many of those artists left the contest early in frustration. There was the Buffalo Frost Fest in the late 80s that was moved to the convention center due to lack of snow. The list goes on.

What might work is coordinating with the City of Buffalo to dump snow, taken from streets and parking lots, in one location to build on for the events. Apparently we do not have a reliable snow fall pattern in January and February, and the snow is typically removed so fast that we do not have a good base to work with. It is my understanding that the City of Montreal imports snow and sets ice for their events months ahead of time. Maybe we will need to do the same.

It's cold til June? Are you sure you live in Buffalo? I hate when people continue the stereotype that it is always cold and snowy here or that we get the most snow in the country.

I agree that late February could be a tricky time. Mid January would be a fun time with Christmas over and the snow is still more white than slush. The photos look great too-the snow maze and those lit up barrels in the snow would be great to see! Hopefully this idea really becomes reality!

I think you should keep the concept simple and focus on one great idea that people would travel to for. Everyone has festivals with all the little attractions. How about an igloo building contest, but pay homage to our great architecture. Not the typical cube stacked igloo, something as ornate as our buildings. Like a sand sculpture on the beach but snow buildings on Bidwell.

Is any of this confirmed? I was told the HSBC plaza was heated and it is usually fenced off in the winter. Will NY really close the Seneca street exit for this? What is happening with the baseball field? Can we set up a luge run on the Skyway?

Since they don't use the Baseball during the winter, anyone feel like contacting the owners to see if we can use the actual field as part of this festival? It's right near the Pearl Street Bewery that gives this area of downtown a buzz on what is normally a quiet time of the season.

Cold in June? Yeah right, I guess that is why they hold the Allentown Arts Festival in early June!

I've posted several comments over the years about Buffalo's potential for having a Winter Festival. I envision it taking place down on the water front near the potential Bass Pro with their future skating canals.

Here's a thought, why not contact Ft. Erie and make this an international event like the Friendship Festival. Beaver Tails anyone? It would definitely attract more people, which, after all, is the point of these festivals. The whole Powder Keg theme could be 1 day of the festival as opposed to the whole event. Just my 2 cents.

We should have a human dog sled race and use Mayor Brown and his goons to pull the citizens around!

I've been thinking about a Winterfest too. But my idea was to have it at Tifft Farms, and use the mounds for sledding and the pond for ice skating. We definitely need a Winterfest of some sort.

Forgot to mention that Holdiay Valley in EV has an enormous ice bar and Igloo for their Mardi Gra Festival in March. How about adopting this idea into Bflo's snow/winter festival?

Buffalo really does need a winterfest! I would love if you could have sleigh rides. Every year I search online for them and usually do not have much luck. I do agree that late February is kind of late however February is also the most dreary month of the entire year and it would be nice to have something to look forward to. Maybe just earlier in the month.

This is going to put the city on the map...what can any of us do besides spreading the word around?

What a great idea to get people to come to Buffalo in the winter! I absolutely miss the Festival of Lights as well. As long as its cold enough one could always use those snow makers they use for ski hills to generate snow should there not be any for the festival.

WEAK! first id like to say im a supporter of buffalo. This good idea was poorly organized. It was crowded chaos at best. No visible signs or lines to direct movement. The tube ride was a total flop, don't bother standing in line to ride down a slight slope that u have to pull urself down on. The maze was cool once u figured out that there was a line to enter...kinda.. although we skipped to the front for lack of direction. We got kicked out of the beer tent becuzz we had kids looking for food...sorry didnt see the sign. oh and how do u sign up for broomball? poor organization and poor advertising!! didnt know whether to bring tubes..it was just very minor league..sorry buffalo
