Zombies R US

Zombies R US
Participants of Buffalo's Zombie Walk congregated at Bidwell Parkway this afternoon at 1:30pm. I spotted them at Hodge and Elmwood fifteen minutes later, and shortly after that they were on their zigzagging way to Days Park in Allentown.

Over the years I've been less and less enthralled with Halloween. Maybe it's the 'been there done that' feeling that finally caught up with me. If there was ever an event to reinvigorate your love (or hate) of Halloween, the Zombie Walk would be it.

Rule #1 is 'no rocking cars'. That's in the Zombie Walk handbook. Really. That alone made me seek out the zombies. I wanted to see if they would actually, once in action, attempt to rock cars. Rule #2 is 'no smearing your drooling mug against store display windows'. The rules alone bring a smile to my face.

By the time I saw the mass of zombies approaching Days Park my heart actually began to race. "Where do I stand with my camera to get the best shot?" I wondered aloud. Then I thought, "If they're zombies, won't they come to me?" So I stood, leaning against a street lamp with my camera by my side. And in true zombie fashion, a hundred zombies crossed the street heading in my direction. Apparently most people intuitively get out of the way when zombies approach. But I wanted a good photo... not for Buffalo Rising per se... just to see what would happen more or less.

Boy did it happen. As the first few approached, I backed up slowly, and then quickly to get out of their path. Then I remembered that I was their path. In my retreat I was actually leading them away from their ultimate destination. Would they touch me if I let them get too close? Would they hurt me? Of course not... though they were certainly playing it up pretty good. To tell you the truth, if you've seen as many zombie movies as I have, it was more intimidating that I would have guessed. That's when I actually found myself running to get away.

Eventually I doubled back to Days Park and found the zombies chatting away. They were laughing and regaling themselves with stories from the walk. It was quite a scene to see so many of them all in one place - resurrected doctors, golfers, punk rockers, suits and so on. One of the best things about a Zombie Walk is that you don't have to dress like a zombie to be in one. Everyone who was on Elmwood today participated in one way or another... whether they wanted to or not!

It's that time of year again. Time to stitch yourself together, grab your best-tattered duds and slather the red red kroovy all over your body... or what's left of it. It's time to celebrate brain drain in high fashion - certainly a gutsy move to join ... Read More

Wow- a multi-paragraph article on this disapointing turnout? *sigh*. A little too little, and a couple of years too late. Kudos to those trying to make it work, but way too little interest and effort at this point in the game. Event was advertised as 1:00 to 4:00- by 1:45, there was no sign of anyone along the route. A little too windy or rainy, I guess...

Surprised to see a multi-paragrsph piece posted about this- I can see trying to hype it before it happened, but I was sure it would have been allowed to slip by with non-participatory zombie dignity once it failed as an event. Alas, no- BR trying to make a mountain out of an elmwood village molehill, in true form. What's the next trend we'll hear about a few years late, and try to spin as our own cool thing? Happy Halloween. (And I'm not one of the usual negative posters here- sometimes, though, you gotta call them like you see them.)

LittleSis, you must have been one of the zombies who slept in late or did too much crack before the event. Want me to add the photos of the mass number of zombies congregating in Days Park? Or the hordes of them coming down Allen. Upon heading home I saw two different packs of zombies that apparently missed the boat and were walking around looking for the action. You must have been in one of those groups. Next year try to be on time.

Hey, I apologize for that first post- I foolishly left my laptop open after signing in, and a nay-sayer in my apartment posted that- an imposter! I'm glad the event was a success (and my roomate is banned from my computer).

Nice *****-slap Newell!

It never ceases to amaze me that I live halfway across the country now, and I'm STILL a bigger booster of my hometown than many of those who still have the privilege of residing there.

The Zombie Walk is one of the things I miss about Buffalo... They have one here in Minneapolis, but the participants aren't as much fun as the ones back home are.

I must admit, the fact that Minneapolis/St. Paul even HAS a Zombie Walk is kind of surprising, since your average Minnesotan walks around with a sharp stick up their butt.

Hey! Maybe Little Sis or her alleged "roommate" (Jose Cuervo?) and their lousy attitude would be better suited to life up here in the frozen North... If Buffalo is so damn apathetic to you Little Sis, there's a whole country out here just waiting for you to share your coolness with it.

I think the "roommate" might be Vincent Gallow hanging out in Hollywood. Which would explain the bad attitude and why he didn't see the 200+ people dressed as zombies walking down Elmwood. Which was at least twice as many people as last year. So I don't think the event failed. It's actually gaining steam. It may not be original, but it sure was fun. I laughed until my face hurt.

I just moved back to Buffalo a few weeks ago, to help out some family members. I wasn't sure what I would find in the way of stuff going on around town. I was so excited to find this kind of event going on here- it made my weekend. I hope to find more things of this nature. And next year, I plan on amping up my costume- I got some good ideas from the crowd!

(And LittleSis- if you're still around after being mocked- I feel your pain. My brother did something similar to me when I left my facebbok page open, and I'm still trying to recover from his embarassing post.)

I cannot figure out how this was a good idea to have the Zombie Walk at the same time on Elmwood as the little kids Safe Trick or Treat? Seems like this is a very, very bad mix of two totally different (and both very cool) Halloween events. So glad we had something else to do Saturday with our 5 year old.
