What's Left to Say?

What’s Left to Say?
To use the words of a compenent NFL coach, Dennis Green, the Bills are who we thought they were.  They don't have enough talent on the offensive line, the defensive line, the linebacker corp and, most importantly, at the quarterback position.  Trent Edwards, who may or may not be better than JP Losman, managed to offend Bills fans with his words more than his play when he proclaimed "I'm not a Bills fan, I play for the Bills so I can't answer that question" when asked if he were a Bills fan would he have booed the Bills.

Yesterday's 6-3 loss to Cleveland may have been the worst NFL game played in 40 years. Cleveland's starting quarterback Derek Anderson went 2-17 for 23 yards and 1 interception.  Those are his stats for a full NFL game. And Cleveland won.  This is Cleveland's first win in 10 games when they last won against . . . you guessed it. . . Buffalo.

The Bills committed 13 penalties including 9 false starts.  When you add Trent Edward's awful interception and Roscoe Parrish's bone-headed attempt to field a rolling punt with less than 4 minutes remaining in the game, you have one of the worst Bills performances of all time.  And this comes on the heels of last weeks' embarassment in Miami.

As Ralph Wilson continues to take a pass on professionalizing the organization, it becomes increasingly clear that the Bill Polian era in Bills history was the exception, not the rule.  From Kay Stehpenson to Hank Bullough to Wade Phillips to Gregg Williams to Mike Mularkey to Dick Jauron, Wilson's choices are more often wrong than right. Whether Wilson can, at 91 years old, find the will and the ability to try yet again is the question that keeps Bills fans up at night.

Oh, and by the way, the Toronto Star's headline is 'Pathetic Bills Sink to New Low.'  That should help sell some tickets for the Bills - Jets contest at the Rogers Centre (plenty of good seats remain so get shopping!)

Trent Edwards just doesn't get it!
What a stupid thing to say.

Jauron should be unemployed today but sadly he is not. It is clear that the organization is content knowing they did well in ticket sales this season. They have no commitment to winning. Unfortunately the only way we as fans can send a message is by refusing to buy tickets/merchandise until major change is made. If we do so, we risk pushing the team out of town. It is a lose/lose situation. The situation will not change under Ralph Wilson. It is becoming increasingly clear that Toronto is disinterested in the Bills. Bills management is good at marketing and terrible and football. Unfortunately you need a staff good at both to have longevity in the world of professional sports.

Dennis Green is NOT a competent NFL coach.

i think that was a comparison to the "coaches" on the sideline yesterday.

Well, Dennis Green has a 55% career winning record compared to Jauron's 42%. Green took the Vikings to the playoffs 8 out of 10 years including 2 trips to the Conf championship game. He actually has a very similar record to Marv Levy (Levy has a 56% career winning percentage and took Bills to playoffs in 8 out of 12 years including, of course, 4 trips to super bowls).

So if Green isn't 'competent,' you must think there have only been 15 competent coaches in the history of the league.

Fire Jauron and release Edwards. Pick up a "consultant" to help coach and play Fitspatrick, and then prepare to lose 14 games this year. Or keep both and prepare to lose 14 games this year.

Fitzpatrick? Yeah, he's got a good Wonderlic score. Oh you mean play him in a football game? I think I'll let him give signals from the sideline and play Hamdan.

Put the whole team on waivers and bring in some college kids. At least they'd know how to lose with class.

It is too bad we can't fire Ralph Wilson. The mediocrity starts at the top, the best thing for the Bills right now is to sell the team and hope they stay in Buffalo.

the game was an epic Battle for the Bottom of the Barrel... I wouldn't have expected anything less.

There is no O line, there never was.
Proving that the acquisition of T Owens was nothing more then PR to help sell tickets.
There is no commitment to winning, there never has been.

At some point the Bills shifted from offering a good product (a team that can win) to deceiving the Bills’ fans with marketing and promotion (a team that can rally the faithful). From a business standpoint, they decided instead of paying the money and putting the time into building a great team that can get to the Super Bowl to get ticket and merchandise sales up (as they did in the late 80’s early 90’s in the Bill Polian era) that they could save money by hiring mediocre coaches, signing second rate and past their prime players, and letting our talent and team leaders leave, all while keeping the marketing blitz up, and still sell record numbers of season tickets and merchandise. Why are Bills’ fans fooled by this plan? The 12th Man’s undying devotion to the team. So why would the Bills, from a business stand point, change their strategy of investing the least amount possible, while still getting the most in return? They are getting the most for their buck. And we, as Bills fans, are getting seriously ripped off. The Bills front office is not trying to create a team that can win. They just want a team that they can make money off. And one would think that a good team would make money. But if they are still making money off a bad team, why invest money into a good team? Thank you for betraying and exploiting some of the best fans in the league. Good thing I didn’t buy my season tickets again this year.

The obvious explanation to this entire sordid affair is Ralph Wilson died last year and Russ Brandon has been going Weekend at Bernie's on us. And we've fallen for it.

Let's wake up people.

I know this is a long shot, but, geeeez, I can't fathom a team playing as bad as the Bills did yesterday - so here goes:
.
What if they are playing poorly to disenfranchise the fans, creating lackluster ticket sales in the future seasons, showing that the area does not support the team, making way for a quick sale elsewhere?
.
A friend of mine said it best yesterday - "They look like toddlers." Actually, injuries or not, they could have played better. Look at the Browns, without Cribbs they had nothing and he didn't even perform as well as could be expected.
.
It's almost as if Edwards is on acid during the past few games. Another Bills WTF moment, folks.

And just think, that game only cost the community $817,000. Wonder how many kids could be enjoying improvements to our schools this kind of money would have provided.

Yep - millionaires playing millionaires, owned by millionaires, way out in the suburbs, all heavily subsidized by sucker taxpayers. How sad that one side might "lose" to the other side. The only "losers" are the fools paying for it all - ticket buyers and tax payers. "We" didn't win? Guess what? "We" all lose, every time.

Here's a Buffalo News article that breaks down the public subsidies to the Bills: http://www.buffalonews.com/cityregion/buffaloerie/story/552787.html

I would be happy if the Bills went to Toronto - close enough to still consider them "our team", but we wouldn't be burdened with paying for them. The only problem is that the way they've played recently, why would Toronto want to buy them?

I think natedogg26 is right. The ownership of the Bills is treating the team the same way out-of-town "investors" treat rental houses on the east and west sides. Invest as little as possible, and keep all of the "cash flow" as profit.

Abysmal, simply abysmal.

I recall when a Bills/Browns match-up was worth suffering an I-90 snowstorm or worse yet, the Pennsylvania State Police. Now, it's an affront to anybody who commits their hard earned [and increasing scarce] dollars to expecting to see professionals on the field of play.

Let Wilson shuffle off to Toronto with the hapless Bills in tow.

I find it amazing that parks and libraries are closed to help balance a budget. Schools are under funded to the point teachers are baking to raise money for field trips etc, yet the county funds a team owned by a multi millionare. Still trying to wrap my head around the stupidty of either the County or the people that feel that is justifed. I suppose it's no different than the city paying for Snyders renovation of the Hyatt though. Whatever happened to if you don't turn a profit you close?

It is a protected monopoly. The NFL determines the number of teams and the cities they play in. The NFL determines salaries and seating capacities, they determine where teams go depending on the kickbacks they receive from those cities. They determine eligibility of players coming from college and whether or not they will have a career. If Buffalo loses the Bills, there is only an outside chance that one of the few franchises would be allowed to return to Buffalo.

I'd love to see competition in football because the game has really gone down hill in recent years. Wouldn't it be great if LA started their own football franchise that would compete against NFL franchises. Wouldn't it be great if the Buffalo Bills would risk losing their right to play against the best teams based on performance this year. Would you imagine if teams like Cleveland, Detroit, and Buffalo had to win in order to play in the big leagues. I think that would change Ralph Wilson's approach towards his football team. Maybe if they had to win or risk losing their chance to compete to a new and upcoming team, like they do in world class soccer and cricket leagues, then there might be more focus on creating a championship team instead of sustained mediocrity.

The argument for the Hyatt was that it's necessary to have in order for the convention center to work. So I can see the view (though not necessarily agree with it) that it needs a public subsidy to keep it afloat.

But the Bills are a highly-profitable commercial endeavor. They can afford to pay their own way. The reason they don't is because the NFL enforces a league monopoly that ensures that there are fewer teams than there are cities who want a team. So the team owners can have all the bargaining power against cities who have sunk all their civic pride into a sports team.
