United We Stand: United Way Looks for $1 per Week

United We Stand: United Way Looks for $1 per Week
The United Way asks: What Will You Do With $1?  Tim Doolittle (pictured), 2009 Campaign Chair for the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, is asking everyone to take a step back and imagine what can be accomplished by simply investing a dollar a week in the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County.

The United Way of Buffalo & Erie County has set a campaign goal of $14,200,052 for their 2009 campaign and Doolittle truly believes that is an achievable goal, especially if people who don't normally give because they don't think their contributions will make an impact, realize that every dollar counts.

"By sacrificing purchasing a small coffee once a week or similarly priced items, you can invest that dollar in your community and see real and tangible results," insists Doolittle. "A dollar a week can buy two children 10 books or provide a senior breakfast for a year, helping to inspire our future generations and keep our seniors well and connected."

United Way inspires new partnerships, delivers financial resources, and ensures a return on your investment so that people benefit and the community thrives. Contributions are invested in local programs to ensure that children and youth reach their potential through education; families attain financial stability and independence; and children and adults achieve and maintain good health.

"By investing as little as a dollar a week, that's $52 a year, in your local United Way you are buying stock in your community and you are helping to build a better community for every person in Erie County," Doolittle says.

I started donating directly to the charities and organizations that I am interested in supporting instead of going through the United Way. I used to be a strong supporter of the United Way, until they cut funding to several local charities earlier this year, with little notice or compassion for the organizations that depended on the United Way's funding.

I am also not interested in part of my contributions going to fund Michael Weiner's $165,000 salary and additional bonuses. If the organization was seriously strapped for cash, enough to cut funding of many essential services like the Boys and Girls Clubs, Red Cross, YMCA, etc; they why didn't the President and other executives take a similar cut in pay like many other executives do?

I prefer to see my money going to the people who need it most.
