Random Foodie Thoughts

Random Foodie Thoughts

An assortment of brief thoughts about food floating around in my head...

*Most of the times that I drive by Amigo's on Kenmore Avenue, the parking lot is packed. I haven't been there yet. Am I missing something? What's good there?

*I try not to go to chain establishments but occasionally I relent. I go to Moe's once in a while for the Art Vandalay burrito. I get a kick out of workers half-heartedly saying "Welcome to Moe's" in unison. There's a Moe's opening soon in the Target plaza in North Buffalo. That's dangerously close to my house.

*Went to the Founding Fathers Pub for the first time a few months ago. Cool place. I'm a sucker for any place with a popcorn machine, plus they had complimentary nachos and cheese. Remember when Kurt Cobain sang "I wish I was like you, easily amused"? That's me, easily amused.

*Another place I tried for the first time was La Dolce Vita. My wife and I went there recently on a Saturday night and though it was busy, we were able to get a good table right away without a reservation. I never hear people talk about this place. What are your experiences with La Dolce Vita?

*Any suggestions for healthy takeout options? When I want something fast, but tastes good and is reasonably healthy, I usually go with a Greek wrap from Joe's Deli or a "Big Blue" salad from Falalfel Bar. But I feel like I don't have a lot of options when I'm in a hurry and want to eat something on the healthy side.

*As someone who grew up in Niagara Falls, it was nice to see the Como Restaurant at Taste of Buffalo this summer. If you're in Niagara Falls and have a few minutes to spare, pop into the Como Deli (located next to the restaurant) and try their pizza bread, it's delicious. They always have meatballs, sausage and sauce ready to go. It'll still be hot when you get home.  What's the closest thing we have to Como in Buffalo?

*Speaking of Taste of Buffalo, wouldn't it be nice if there were an indoor food festival (or two) during the winter? Maybe a small-scale food festival at Central Terminal? Or the Broadway Market?

Always had good experience at La Dolce Vita.

Healthy take out option - Amy's Place. Can't get enough Amy's. Huge portions, so go with the half size when available.

thumbs up: lake effect diner. great food, great service, great prices, great hours.
thumbs down: gabriels gate. sticky tables, poor service and i hear they charge extra for lettuce and pickles. only good thing about the place is the taxidermy.

i hate to get off topic but i do have to agree about gabriel's gate, one of my last times there i found out that you get charged per glass of pop.....after i had like 4 of them and they aren't that big......and we waited probably at least a half hour for someone to take our orders and probably almost another hour for food, when we complained all we got was my refills for free and an excuse that they had a large party of about 10 people so it tied up the kitchen....and sadly that was probably one of my better trips there

I am in agreement about Gabriel's Gate, they have really gone down hill under the new ownership. This is sort of on topic, but I was told that Gabriel's Gate was bought by the former owners of Molly's Pub, one of the many vacant bars contributing to the blight on Main Street. Molly's was closed for serving alcohol to minors, the owners were not held criminally liable for serving to minors and were able to cash out and buy Gabriel's Gate. Something is wrong with that picture. I won't eat at Gabriel's Gate and discourage others from eating there, and this used to be one of my favorite places to eat in the 90s. I might go back if they do something about the eyesore that they left on Main Street.

I frequent La Dolce often..Ross Runfolo the hardworking owner is a great guy.. His food is top notch..especially his pizza's...Great prices, great food, great atmosphere and great staff that's what makes La Dolce such a great place!

I agree that Moe's is one of the only chain places worth frequenting and Falafel Bar is always awesome!! Unfortunately, I have had awful experiences at La Dolce Vita and so have several of my friends. The food was below average and the service was just okay, so nothing to go back for as far as we were concerned.

Oh, one more thing! Rather than go to La Dolce Vita, we visit Romeo & Juliet's for great, authentic Italian options on Hertel!

I would definitely give Amigo's a big thumbs up. I think they recently renovated their dining area/added it on - the bar area could use some work though. The food is awesome (not Mexican though - that throws some people) and the prices/portions are great. I would definitely suggest you check it out

Gabriel's Gate--not all that.

i'm a sucker for Sahara Grill. The food is so good and unique. The Shawarma sandwiches are great and the prices are really reasonable. Also, from their Smoothie Bar, the PB and banana one is awesome!

I agree with you as far as the Sahara Grill is concerned. There isn't ANYTHING like it here in Minneapolis. Quality neighborhood restaurants are one of the things I miss most about Buffalo since I relocated to the Twin Cities a little over a year ago.

Gabriel's Gate used to be one of my favorite places to eat in Allentown, and I have to agree that since it changed hands, the level of quality of service suffered greatly.

Some of my tops:

99 fast food on Bailey
Taste of Thai on Hertel
Sterling on Hertel (tho be prepared to wait for that burger)
India Gate on Elmwood
Left Bank on Rhode Island

La Dolce Vita left a bad taste in my mouth. Went there on a Wednesday a couple weeks ago, they weren't very busy it was probably 7:45.

The good: stuffed peppers, awesome.

The BAD:
-salad that was brown and slimy
-$20 pasta special that was nothing special
-atmosphere, waitress spraying down all the tables as we ate, clatter of kitchen packing up to go home, not romantic or even pleasant...

Restaurants I have enjoyed:
Amigos - fantastic fish fry, love the mac n cheese side
Left Bank - Best food I have ever eaten
Franks Sunny Italy - the best Italian, insane portions.

Left Bank gets a ton of hype. The food was good but the hype spoiled it. It's not Left Bank's fault. It's like when people tell you how amazing a movie is and you go see it expecting it to be the best movie you have ever seen...then afterwards you are disappointed because it is only the fourth best movie you have ever seen. Fouth is awesome...but relative to you expectations...it just wasn't quote good enough.

I agree regarding Left Bank, its prob the most hyped place in the city it seems, its quite a fashionable place to say you are going, or have gone. Anyways, I have had some very good meals there, my last one not so much though.
Lately i have been enjoying my fair share of SeaBar, and I cannot get enough of it, its actually overtaken Mother's (which seems to have dropped off a bit) as my current favorite.
I also love being able to walk down the st to Sterling Place, because as far as really awesome basic bar food, friendly people, and great beers on tap, its hard to beat that place.

Haven't been to Left Bank in a while but am a fan of their brunch. Pretty laid back atmosphere for brunch and it's always been good food and service. You win being walking distance from Sterling Place. I always have a great time at Sterling. Went there last Saturday night--good crowd, friendly bartender, Yankees game on the telly, and a solid classic rock jukebox. Life is good.

Oops, make that Sterling Place last Friday night. Not that anyone cares, but just for the sake of being accurate.

I've never attempted to try La Dolce Vita, since I've only ever heard/read terrible things about it. Had some good lunches at Amigo's, and the atmosphere is nice. Founding Father's is one of my favorite bars. You can't beat free nachos, and it's a good place where you can go with friends and actually be able to have a conversation without having to yell. Moe's is basically like Salsarita's in my opinion, which means the food is okay but not very exciting. Sometimes I like to go to the Salsarita's downtown when they have $2.99 margaritas, more for the cheap margaritas than the food. I've never been to the Como, but what I tried at Taste of Buffalo didn't make me ever want to go. I'll stick with Santasiero's.

A couple of other notes: Frank's Sunny Italy is bad. Left Bank is good. La Tee Da is better.

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

The food at La Tee Da is WONDERFUL, however, I've only eaten there once and didn't go back, simply because she has too many tables crammed into a very small space, not to mention that she had a three-piece jazz band shoehorned in next to the bar as well. It was a bit disconcerting having to move my drink so it wasn't in the bass player's way.

Frank's Sunny Italy is an insult to Italians and Italian food - it's honestly horrible. Try The Italian Village on grant - tiny little place but delicious, or Amici Ristorante on Elmwood in Kenmore.
Where is La Tee Da?

Unfortunately, Italian Village on Grant is closed. As brookeinbuffalo already mentioned, La Tee Da is on the west end of Allen Street. It's especially nice when the patio is open.

Marco's Italian Village is the best italian food I have had in Buffalo thus far and it is right in the heart of the west side!

As far as fast food in buffalo goes. Salsaritas is pretty good for a quick mexiamerican fix. I have yet to try ETS but my family who lived here many moons ago said I must go.

As for healthy fast food... well Kunis sushi bar on Lexington is amazing. Also, the wraps served at the falafel bar are also really good too!

La Tee Da is amazing as well and the atmosphere is very romantic and inviting. It is located on Allen St. near the bookstore.

Betty's is such a wonderful restaurant all around. From the art on the walls to the food on the plates. It is all made fresh and lovingly. Delish!!!

I am in love with Thai and Indian and love to go to both India Gate (cannot beat their food!) and Saigon, both on Elmwood. I also agree with the comment about Saraha Grill. Very good food! Also, if you want to try some excellent Puerto Rican food go to Niagara Cafe! YUM!

Sahara grill now closed due to unreconcilable differences with the owners. They were good but always had something great on the menu that they were out of, sorry but not acceptable so I crossed them off my list. LaTeeDa and the owner are charming, food is pretty good but a bit overpriced for what it is, this is not NYC btw. The place is tiny and the chair I was in made me almost slide out of it as I was wedged against the wall in the entrance. All in all nice and different. I hear the terrace is great in the summer!

Dolce Vita, I bought some cookies there that tasted bizarre and never went back. I suggest India Gate for the buffet and Taste of Thai was the better half of the split when "The King and I" closed on Harlem Rd. Fast Food 99 for Viet Pho is excellent and budget friendly.

Palenque on Niagara Falls Blvd. is a good choice for Mexican and this is locally owned as well. Kuni is now a local fixture and real Japanese sushi chef who prides himself on quality and traditional Japanese fare. I like his new place better than the old. Been a fan of Kuni since he worked at Saki's 20 years ago now.

La Marina keeps changing but I go for the sole with lemon caper sauce which has been excellent to pretty good all the time. They are known for seafood with an Italian flair. I agree with the post that Frank's Sunny Italy is awful, bland tomato sauce and just blah overall. While we are on the subject of Hertel, Kostas is horrible and I tried to get over to Vasily's on Kenmore Ave. but now sure he is still open...I guess I will have to visit the Towne for my Greek fix.

Hutch's and Olivers are my fave higher priced "haute cuisine" in Buffalo and continue to serve the highest quality fare here. Tsunami was excellent but I have not tried Sea Bar yet...
