Michael Gainer Named Program Director at Buffalo ReUse

Michael Gainer Named Program Director at Buffalo ReUse

Effective yesterday, October 19th, Michael Gainer was offered, and has accepted, the position of program director for Buffalo ReUse, the not-for-profit agency he founded.

The responsibilities of the position were agreed on by the board of directors, and are as follows:

-Provide monthly deconstruction and salvage report, and program status. This is to include what jobs have been completed, in-progress, signed and prospects. All jobs discussed are to include estimated costs and revenue expected.

-Direct field operations for deconstruction and salvage activities.

-Coordinate subcontracted services, such as utility cuts, asbestos surveys, abatements, excavators and other as needed.

-Follow up on job leads, responsible for job estimates and providing estimates for financial review prior to contract execution.

-Direct staff training of deconstruction and salvage activities.

-Coordinate safety and environmental compliance training for staff members.

-Pursue funding opportunities.

-Instrumental in strategic development and implementation of existing and future community programs.

-Member of the Strategic Community Development Committee.

This decision ends what may have been two of the toughest months in Gainer's career, when he was fired from his job as ReUse COO, after having been replaced as CEO months earlier.  Gainer has a new board in place, with the exception of Michelle Johnson, who has been with ReUse since its inception.  New board President Vince Kuntz is said to have offered Gainer the position in a private conference.

This is great news. It is great that the organization is moving forward and recognizing the significant role that Michal plays for East Side Buffalo. Michael is one of the rare individuals who knows how to work effectively with individuals from less privileged backgrounds. He inspires and encourages neighborhood residents to get engaged in improving their surroundings.

Looks to this reader like the scope of his duties is very broad and ambiguous. I do not know the details of his specific responsibilies, but sometimes the devil is in the details. But I hope this is all he hoped for as the roles are all in critical areas.

When you're dealing with a Founder of an organization that has had an erratic relationship with its board, the job decription should read: Be Michael Gainer. This is a healing move and will hopefully get BRU out of the negative headlines.

Why is this guy's job description an article?

Most importantly, where it began on the east side of Buffalo, NY, Michael Gainer is the F O U N D E R of the concept of structural reuse.

This is a good move for the organization. He has the vision and drive, but lacks the managerial and organizational skills to really make ReUse a success. I volunteered a few times and the events / store / projects were always a disorganized cluster f**k. Michael is great at the hands-on, but was way over his head when it came to running this organization. I think his sidekick C.S. needs some organizational help as well, they were running the organization as amateurs and many people stopped taking them seriously.

as if everyone but michael knew exactly how to run a nonprofit deconstruction/job training organization. no one had ever done here or in most cities until michael did it.

He started it and did what he could and ran it to the best of his ability, no one should take that away from him. His idea for Buffalo was tried and established in cities like Boston and DC, and he built off those ideas. He has done a great job starting this organization, but it is time that he realized that he is not a good manager, he is disorganized, he has major shortcomings when it comes to financial discipline and organizational leadership, and the organization needed to put someone else at the helm if they wanted the organization to thrive. There is no shame in that. Michael should be proud of what he started and should excel in his current role.

Founding an organization doesn't mean you should be the leader forever. Take a look at SABAH and other organizations who have excelled after the founder has stepped aside to let the organization move beyond his/her ego.
