Grace Manor is a good example of the flaws in our Medicaid and Medicare systems. They tried for years to increase the number of private pay / private insurance residents, because a nursing facility of this size cannot operate on the reimbursement rates offered by the State and Federal Governments. They were receiving supplemental funds to cover operating costs, but those were pulled during one of the many State budget cuts, and that ultimately led to their decision to close. It is sad, because this is a relatively nice facility, and it has potential to be repurposed to do more ambulatory and rehabilitation care for private pay patients. This is the only way that a nursing facility of this size can survive.

I support a universal healthcare system; however one of my concerns is the level of care offered when government reimbursement rates begin to drop. If more people move off private pay, especially the large number of government employees and government retirees in our area, what will be the impact to local health providers? My guess is that we will see local facilities, like Grace Manor, bought out by huge national companies who can leverage their size and lobbying strength to influence the government.

Off the topic of discussion here but I love the aerials pictured!

Pictures look caged from Google Maps, probably should be credited and fee paid for commercial uses of their content. Or maybe someone at BR has a helicopter and a super camera.

You didn't hire that Chick from Artvoice, did you?

Not Google Maps, that's bing Maps (Microsoft's site) that has the bird's eye aerial views.

The expansion project was opposed by local residents at the time it was proposed and built.

it IS ugly, but for some reason the one picture of it reminds me of one of my favorite buildings in the world (designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh):

maybe with a few tasteful architectural elements, it could add something to symphony circle.

Where are the residents being placed that currently live there now? Is it up to their family members to place them in a new facility? Just curious...

The article above says it closed in March, so the residents must have been moved.

Speaking of this area... does anybody know the status of the Porter restoration?!?! Obviously it hasn't happened yet this year. Is it a dead deal? Or just being delayed for funding?

I hope it fails to sell so it can finally be demolished and something far more characteristic of the neighborhood and it's enormous historical import can be built.

I'm with Sony on this one, tear it down and turn it into a communal, urban, organic, mixed use farm. It goes without saying it would need to be farmed to the curb.

Great idea Karl. Id take it a step further though and put up somthing that would appeal to the selfish suburban dumbass crowd like a parking lot, an Applebees or anything with vinyl siding. Forget gardens and build to the curb we need to make this city more 'burban.

a little anti-semitic and ignorant dont you think?

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

it's an inside joke. Christine, aka QueenCity, aka Chris69, etc., is apt every so often to go on some rant blaming Buffalo's ills on either Murial Howard and affirmative action or non Christians (particularly Jews). He tends to be on relatively good behavior with each new moniker for a while. But eventually the capital letters come out along with vitriol.

this does not explain how it is funny or acceptable. this is about the fourth or fifth anti-semitic comment I have seen on BR and I am beging to think BR turns a blind eye to it...

It wasn't meant to be an inside joke, but rather baiting 'christine' to spew forth some of his patented anti-semitism/racism/sexism.

fyi, I am a Jew.

How about a well-designed row of four and five story townhouses that could send a percentage of its fees to the BPO in exchange for season tickets for buyers?

tall row houses (like the midway) would be very cool on symphony circle...

Odd that they consider Blacks a "minority", but not Jews.

- Religious groups are not considered minorities. They are a protected class, but not a minority in terms of representation, opportunity, or discrimination.
