The Broadway Theatre Renaissance

The Broadway Theatre Renaissance
The Sattler Theatre, often called the Broadway Theatre (c.1914), at 516 Broadway near Jefferson, was purchased by Western New York Minority Media Professionals for $40,000, and will be restored for roughly $1 million.  It will be a gem once again.

The purchase itself is sort of old news, but the group is now on the verge of construction.  At the moment, Watts Engineering and Architecture has been hired with Flynn Battaglia Architects to oversee the work.  Construction will begin in October, once the construction company has been chosen.  At the moment, WNYMMP has narrowed it down to five prospective companies vying for the job.

Structurally, the building is sound, but requires aesthetic renovations to be ready for use. The theatre is tentatively scheduled to reach completion this fall or in the early winter of 2010.

The finished Sattler Theatre will be WNYMMP headquarters, with the Bob Coles Institute (a media artifact museum) located directly behind it, housing a TV studio on one floor and performance space on another, for students looking to brush up their skills in front of the camera or in the performing arts.  It will be open to all members of the city.

Western New York Minority Media Professionals is a non-profit media organization created through Channel 7 (WKBW) producers in order to promote skill in the media arts for families as well as individuals.  The group has already created WNY Magazine, Up Front TV, and the forthcoming program Speak A Blessing.

The goal of WNYMMP is to bring jobs to Buffalo, create scholarship programs for students, and provide great entertainment for all to enjoy.

This is great news. I am sure that it is especially welcome news given the recent announcements about closing the HSBC branch and Post Office branches, as well as the scheduled demolition of a host of buildings on Broadway.

Downtown has the Sheas and Righteous Babe.

Allentown has a theater and Kleinhans and Karpelles

Hertel has a Theater

The westside has a new arts center in the former Presbyterian Church which is magnificent.

Now the eastside is getting a magnificent theater on the magnitude of miniature Sheas.

I dont think the Lyceum on Broadway(?) has been demolished.

But does anyone notice anything wrong? Am I the only one? Where is South Buffalo? Is there not a single historic theater in South Buffalo that can be brought to life for the citizens of this section of Buffalo? Its kind of ironic because the Irish, Welsh and Scotts are absolutely wonderful singers and musicians and dancers...among their many other talents...their easy on the eyes as well.

So Mr. & Mrs. South Buffalo...do you notice anything wrong with this picture and are you willing to celebrate your community renovating a historic building for a neighborhood theater?

By the way, Kearns is from South Buffalo and one would think that a replacement Convention/Conference Center and a historic theater would be a significant campaign issue for his district.

S. Buffalo does have that former Mason Lodge next to Caz Park which is now used for banquets and such, as well as the Irish Center(can't remember the actual name) on Abbott. The mason lodge is really cool on the inside from what I remember.
