Saints Win, Bills Lose, Jauron Punts

Saints Win, Bills Lose, Jauron Punts
The Bills weren't expected to beat the Saints.  They were 6 point underdogs to the high-powered 2-0 Saints.  But for the first half, it appeared the Bills could play with New Orleans. Or, more precisely, it appeared the Bills defense could keeps the Saints juggernaut in check long enough to give the Bills offense a chance to show up.  Sadly, the offense didn't take that opportunity and were shut out at home against the 15th ranked defense in the NFL.  Yes, the Bills scored on a fake field goal, but the offense couldn't find a way to generate any points.

Let's quantify just how bad the Bills offense was today.  Trent Edwards went 20-35 for 156 yards and 1 interception. That equals 4.45 yards per attempt which would put Trent Edwards dead last in the NFL of all starting quarterbacks for the past few years in that important metric.  In other words, Captain Checkdown reached a new level today. Heck, he even threw a checkdown pass on 4th and 23 with 2:25 left in the game and the Bills down 2 scores.  The Bills converted 2 of 14 third downs for an anemic 14% third down conversion rate.   And they scored 0 points.

And, just when Bills fans thought it was safe to go back in the water, Coach Dick Jauron struck yet again. The New Orleans offense was starting to show life as they scored a touchdown to take a 17-7 lead with 9:40 left in the fourth quarter.  Following the New Orleans kick-off, the Bills took possession of the ball at their own 19 yard line to start a drive that simply had to generate points.  After a couple - you guessed it - checkdown passes and a couple penalties, the Bills faced 4th and 1 from their own 28 yard line with 7:30 left to play.  The play call was obvious.  Get it to Fred Jackson.  Or, you might argue, run play action and take a shot down field since the Saints would be jumping the line of scrimmage.  What did Dick Jauron choose?  In what can only be considered a jaw-dropping display of stupidity, he punted.

He punted the ball away to New Orleans, and, to exactly no one's surprise, they engineered  a 4 minute drive, extended their lead to 13 and effectively ended the game.  Of course, the game didn't actually end there as Edwards managed to throw another couple checkdowns, the Saints scored another touchdown, and Jauron punted yet again facing 4th and 10 from the Bills 20 with 1:45 left in the game.  The obvious question - was this second punt even dumber than the first punt with 7:30 left?  Too hard to answer.

The Bills had a golden opportunity to register a big win against a good team. Instead, Jauron's Bills took their record to 2-22 against teams with records above .500.

So now what?

Any Bears fan could have predicted the Bills team's abilities with Jauron as coach. No mystery here.

Good. Maybe now Buffalonians will start to realize that the Bills are nothing more than an economic drain for this area, not to mention the fact that they have been a losing team for the past 25 years has more than injured an already fragile collective idenitty. Good riddance.

Meh, can't say I agree with that comment. Clearly you're into knitting.

Two things that bugged me (outside the other obvious ones):

On that late 4th and 1 before the punt, it was pretty obvious on replay that the runner was not down, he rolled over a defender and landed on his feet without either knee touching the field. Everyone in the bar was going nuts for Jauron to throw the challenge flag.

Also, what was with the center's inability to snap the ball properly? It seemed like every shotgun snap in the 4th quarter took a one-hop to Edwards.

haven't checked the NFL rulebook, but his shoulder and/or elbow did touch the ground. nonetheless, it was still pretty close and with that current situtation, completely worth risking a timeout to challenge.

and yeah, hangartner is supposed to be the veteran on that O-line. those were piss-poor snaps. not once. not twice. THREE snaps in a row. CANNOT happen.

Agree 100%. The best call was not to go for it, and not to punt; but rather, CHALLENGE the call. You stand to lose a timeout, but you stand to gain the crucial first down. As it turned out - they didn't need the timeout anyways.

The runner's helmet clearly hit down 1 yard shy of the first down marker. A challenge would have been based on hope, not evidence. Challenge or no challenge, though, you can't punt in that circumstance. A pop warner coach knows that much.

Anyone else think it's funny seeing Coach Dick on the sidelines wearing his cheesy sunglasses at 6:30pm, when the sun is long gone?....

Can't fire that guy soon enough.

That, and Modernist Architect, I think you're a self serving drain on all of Western NY, and should pack your bags and leave as soon as Dick does, which we all hope will be soon. Ignorant....

It is disgusting watching the way Edwards manages the field. We have one of the best WR groups in the league and he's playing a little game of catch with the tight-end for 3 yards. Painful.

At least the defense did well for a while.

The Bills could be good. They just need a decent coach (with some balls) and a quarterback. Ralph Wilson should make things happen, not just care about getting the team to Toronto.

Thats the 1st time T.O. has not caught a ball since 1996 and I am sure he's been double covered many times before the Bills.

-owens has to make the catches. he's had his hands on the ball and FAILED to make the catch in each of the three games.
-that picture at the top is clearly photoshopped because mr. jauron doesn't have the guts to yell at anyone.
-edwards decision-making looks very losman-like. however how much is on him and how much is on the play calling in regards to the receiving target?
-caveat on that, how are they still talking about the "timing" between TE and TO being off? these guys are professionals. two full months should be more than sufficient. i'm pretty sure they both speak english, so it's not like we're dealing with a language barrier.

First, I think its funny that people imply that noone watches the Bills or wants the Bills in Buffalo. If you spend your Sundays knitting socks and sweaters and in you maroon cardigan, please do not post on topics related to sports, or really anything for that matter (i.e. Modernist Architect). Secondly, when is Ralph going to learn that Jauron is not a good coach. The play calling was terrible, you could tell from T.O's interview and Trent's interview that they were not happy with the plays that were being called. Also, when is Trent going to learn that T.O. is a superstar, and superstars don't have the ball rocketed at them. Superstars are so good that the ball is lobbed in their area and they make the play. Trent needs to allow T.O. to make his own play. I walked into a bar in Albany to watch this game, looked around and everywhere I looked was Bills apparel. People had jerseys, hats, T-shirts, sweaters, etc and everyone still had faith. We love this team but we need to make some changes and soon. Of course, none (or very few) of us will be changing teams anytime soo but we would like to see a winning team. We cannot be this winning team with a coach who goes too easy in training camp and practice and then doesn't have the guts to make a call on the field.

Fire Jauron. NOW!

Jauron earns a firing week after week yet old Wilson won't pull the trigger because he was foolish enough to give Jauron a contract that he will have to pay. Edwards could be a decent backup quarterback but when he over shot T.O. by 5 yards on third and 1 he showed that he is not a solid number 1. That play (at the time the score was 17 - 7) could have gone for 6 and would have turned the game around. The punt was absolutely ridiculous. Jauron just gives games away week after week with his foolish conservative "strategies". He is clueless. There are three solid NFL coaches currently unemployed (Shanahan, Gruden, and Cowher) I would sell the farm to pay one of them. Too bad old Ralph never would.

Get somebody NOW!! Jauron just isn't it. Somebody wake Ralph up. Spend a little money now Ralph-you can't take it with you.

Whats the deal with us deferring every time we win the coin toss? Can Jauron not even make the call whether we to kick or receive, whether we want the ball in our hands first, or want to have our defense on the field first? It may not be a glaring issue, but its pretty telling of his inability to make any sort of decision.

Jauron is full of self-defeating thinking habits.
He is not capable of modifying his habituated thinking patterns.

Jauron is a perfect example of how a college education is useless without a strong excitement of feeling, positive thinking and common sense.

Fire Jauron. NOW!

It goes right to the top...Ralph (hall of famer) Wislon. Too cheap to eat the rest of Jauran's contract (after impulsively signing an extension)and hire a coach with a set. Then lure the fans and fill the seats with a one year contract for T.O. who is probably asking himself how in hell he ended up on the miserablely untalented BILLS squad. Combine those mistakes with a desperately unimaginative offense (".....up the middle") and there ya go. Another year of stupid mistakes, stupid coaches and some real stupid players who lack discipline and character. Its getting real old. Such loyal fans are given such a lousy product. I have tickets for the Cleveland Game and I don't even feel like going. It'll be a wasted day.
