This began as an interview that became a romance, and then there is this whole other documentary. Lucky us, we get to see 15 years of Paul H-O's interviews (including Sherman's) this weekend at the Burchfield Penney...and we get to speak to the filmmaker/one time love object of Cindy Sherman.
Cindy Sherman is that wonderful photographer (model, actress, filmmaker, etc.) whose favorite subject is herself, but herself morphed into others - so much so, that even when we know we're looking at her...well, sometimes we feel we don't know at all. Other times, there's enough of her peeking out to make the discovery satisfying, sad, or very funny.
Paul H-O is the videographer/documentarian, who, upon interviewing Sherman, found love. Then he lost it; it's not easy being Cindy Sherman's "guest", especially when you've established yourself in your own right. H-O's forte was attending gallery openings for Gallery Beat (with a video camera) and alternately amusing and/or pissing people off with his deadpan questions and offhand assessments of their
work.
Other than a lot of Buffalo footage, this long-filmed documentary includes interviewees who are a veritable Who's Who of the art, publishing, and movie worlds: Ingrid
Sischy; John Waters; Carol Kane , Molly Ringwald, and Jeanne Tripplehorn
(co-stars of Sherman's 1997
feature film Office Killer); Danny DeVito; Julian Schnabel; and Cindy's Buffalo cohorts and fellow
Hallwalls co-founders Robert Longo, Charlie Clough, Nancy
Dwyer, and Michael Zwack.
Shot partly in Buffalo (including at the
Burchfield Penney Art Center), and including rare archival photos of the
founding artists' Buffalo days, the film paints a vivid picture of the
post-1980s New York City art scene that is also a witty, illuminating,
self-deprecating look at celebrity, relationships, male anxiety, and artistic
creation.
H-O will be on hand to answer questions after the screenings (Try to Google him without getting Cindy Sherman's name in the link.) Sherman's response to the film? "No comment."
Guest of Cindy Sherman will be presented by
Hallwalls and BPAC on Saturday, September 12th at 2:30 and 8:30, and
Sunday, September 13th at 2PM. Peter & Elizabeth Tower
Auditorium of the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Admission: $8
general, $6 students & seniors, $5 HW & BPAC members.
If you happen to be out on the town tonight and tomorrow night, you may run into Paul H-O, in town for the screening of his movie, Guest of Cindy Sherman.Word has it that he and his Gallery Beat videographer will be stopping into several local gallerie... Read More
