Penzeys: Spicing Up the Elmwood Village

Penzeys: Spicing Up the Elmwood Village

The old bagel shop location on Elmwood between Auburn and Cleveland will finally be getting a new tenant, when Penzeys Spices opens up their 43rd retail location at 783 Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo.

The store will carry over 250 herbs, spices and seasonings including whole spices, spice blends, extraordinary cinnamons and peppers, soup bases, extracts, sea salt and many different gift boxes and crates for that special occasions. With all of that variety, Penzeys claims its customers get the best quality spices at costs that are lower than supermarket pricing.

The largest mail-order spice company in the United States, Penzeys knows they already have a good base of customers throughout Western New York that will flock to the Elmwood location.  Expecting to open before the holiday season, their hours of operation will be Monday-Saturday 10AM to 6PM, and Sundays 11AM to 5PM.

With retail operations throughout 24 states, Penzeys has a 300,000 sq ft warehouse that is located in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin (a suburb of Milwaukee). As for the choice to move to Elmwood, Penzeys is a family owned business that was looking for a nice location with foot traffic, where they can become part of the community. They found it!

It will be nice not to have to mail order penzeys spices as I have done for years. Penzeys has always been a fantastic spice supplier and a great value by mail order; I hope buying at the retail level isn't going to be more expensive. Although by having a local store I will probably be spending more money on spices since I won't have to wait to get an order together.

This is great news for the City. Penzey's is a solid operation and I've savored their spices for years. I sincerely hope they prosper; I'll do my share to see that they do.

Don't forget to support the locals, like Millie's Spices. You'll find her at various locations throughout the region including farmers markets etc. Prices are great and so is selection.

When I "announced" the arrival of Penzeys on my facebook page early last week, it was followed by a flurry of comments from excited foodies and chefs. My favorite came from a chef friend who is returning to Buffalo after working in Boston:

"Is that for real? They actually have REAL cinnamon! Amazing! And black cardamom, and Aleppo pepper and Togarashi and......I lurv them."

I can't quote the rest of his enthusiastic posts here (they're decidedly PG13), but Penzeys is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Although we have some great gourmet shops and spice purveyors here, Penzeys supplies a lot of items that chefs and practiced home cooks cannot currently access in Buffalo.

Is this a company-owned branch, or a locally-owned franchise ?
