This Weekend in the Queen City

Autumn is approaching! If you're still looking for some fun-in-the-sun summer events, here's what is happening tonight, Friday and Saturday in Buffalo. 

See the fruits of the labors of the 48Hour Film Fest crews.  Tonight is the 2nd screening, Market Arcade Film and Arts Centre, 639 Main @ 7PM.  Come see Group B of the 48 hour shoot that happened last weekend for some homegrown production talent.  Ticket purchasers will be admitted to the final screening.

See the second showing of the A/V Swap tonight, brought to you by Nickel City Graphics at 8PM, at Squeaky Wheel, 712 Main Street.  Admission is $5, cash bar available.

Help a student in need at "2 Pack A Back Pack," a school supplies drive, presented by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo. The event will be held at local Wal-Mart stores from 6 AM to 9 PM. Enjoy a classic, silent film at Squeaky Wheel's "Silent/Sound Outdoor Festival" on the steps of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery from 8:30 PM until 11 PM. Poet Mike Basinski will perform a live soundtrack to F.W. Murnau's "The Last Laugh" (1924). 

Comedy with a cure in mind.  For $10, the Eclectic Improv Co. is going to be at Babeville to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. 341 Delaware, doors @7, show @ 8.

Dance all night. Don't miss your chance to see Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz team up with Keith Buckely from the Buffalo-based band Every Time I Die for a DJ set at Pure Nightclub (75 West Chippewa Street). The city's first annual all-black attire party starts at 10 PM, featuring dance jams also spun by DJ Dstar, DJ Kid.G, Buckwylde, Adam Curtin and Maxwell Collins. Black attire is encouraged, but not mandatory for this event. General admission and VIP tckets are available at all Ticketmaster locations. Love Rick James?  Then Buffalo Funk Fest 2009 is for you.  1 PM to 9 PM in LaSalle Park, this annual concert is a tribute to the King of Funk, featuring national recording artist Slave and many WNY artists including Nikki Hicks and Will Holton, among others.  Afterparty at "The Good Life," Bailey near Kensington (admission $5).  Do not park on the grass!

Submit your ultimate homemade peirogi for the second annual "Buffalo's Best Peirogi Contest" at Corpus Christi Church (199 Clark Street). The taste test is part of the Church's 30th annual Dozynki Harvest Festival. Winners will be judged by local celebrities, and will receive bragging rights to the title of "Buffalo's Best Homemade Peirogi Maker 2009" and great prizes. Hear "The Tale of Two Watersheds" while paddling your canoe or kayak down the Buffalo River. A guide will explain the ecosystem as well as the natural and man-made forces affecting it. The three-hour cruise will begin at the DEC Harlem Road Access Site at 8 AM. A $15 donation is required for participation. Rentals are available.
