Patrick Kane--What?

Patrick Kane--What?
No doubt that by now, most of you have heard the allegations directed at NHL star and Buffalo native Pat Kane and his cousin.  Sounds like a PR disaster, falling on the heels of a new Buffalo hockey rink dedication only a day or two prior, wherein Kane established himself as what appeared to be the classy, mature-for-his-age leader we had seen taking his team on an impressive playoff run.

At the moment, Kane has been charged with second-degree robbery, fourth degree criminal mischief, and theft of services.  Kane has pleaded not guilty.  Yikes.  Pretty rough stuff for a guy Buffalo unofficially appointed as prodigal son.  You have to be pretty important when your hometown hockey team throws you your own "Welcome Home" ceremony before a regular season game the way the Sabres did prior to the December 2007 game.

kanekopkar.jpg

It all seems weird to me.  Their fare was $13.80, and they handed the guy $15.  Obviously, change would be $1.20.  But the cabbie didnt have the $.20.  And then THIS happens?  What's really going on here?  Is it really a case of "Don't you know who I am?" like the cab driver claims?  I really hope not.  There's not a whole lot of things a celebrity can say that make my blood boil quite like "Don't you know who I AM?"  It just seems like $.20 is a strange amount of money to get fired up about for a guy scheduled to make $875,000 this year.

That's why I'm confused.  I like Pat Kane.  He plays hard and makes his teammates better.  But assaulting a cab driver over $.20?  Am I missing something?  Obviously we won't know the entire story until later on, and even then, we probably won't know the whole truth.  What do you think?

It's all so bizarre. For a guy who logged 42 min. in penalties last season, and with his invitation to play for the US hockey team, it seems so out of character. Unless the cab driver said something else to set them off, it just doesn't make sense.

What I haven't heard is whether alcohol played a factor. You have to think that at 4 AM they may have had one too many.

Why should Kane’s behavior surprise you? He’s a jock and has been nurtured by *******s to be an *******. Kane is a role model for all those little ******* jocks looking for someone to look up to.

What does this mean?
.

"..for a guy Buffalo unofficially appointed as prodigal son."
.
prodigal: 1. Rashly or wastefully extravagant: prodigal expenditures on unneeded weaponry; a prodigal life.
2. Giving or given in abundance; lavish or profuse: prodigal praise. See Synonyms at profuse.
.
Sheesh.

Good point. I was shooting more for the "leaving home and returning to his blue-collar Buffalo roots despite earning a lot of money" idea. Then the whole "spendthrift" definition comes into play with the $.20 dispute. I can see how it was confusing though. Sorry!

It is, and the speed limit on the Kensington Expressway is 50. Selective enforcement... Just about anyone older than 18 can drink in Buffalo.

As with any story, this will evolve. Not really defensible behaviour, but it sounds like the cabby locked them in the car until they paid. An interview with the cabby on tsn he says something about the doors not working because the car was still in drive. Maybe that's standard procedure at 5AM for a cabby... keep the car in drive til paid, so that rider doesn't just jump out.

What a stupid move. I never heard of Wayne Gretzky doing anything ridiculous like that. Who treats someone like that?

Jim Kelly, remember him getting kicked out of a club for throwing a pitcher of water at a ****tail waitress and other incidents.

Thurman Thomas pushed a woman to the ground at Mulligan's on Hertel because she was in his bar space.

Bruce Smith had a DWI his first year in Buffalo and was not arrested despite starting a fight in the ladies room at the stuffed mushroom.

Rob Rey knocked out two teeth of a guy at Networks for spilling his drink in the VIP lounge.

Marshawn Lynch hit a girl with his car then drove home to hide and deny it.

and the list goes on and on and on and on...

South Buffalo tough guy? You can take the man outta South Buffalo but not the South Buffalo outta the man? And yes not all South Buffalonians are the same I know I know but there certainly is that tough guy mentality that runs deep there.

who knows what really happened. it just shocks me that these highly paid athletes find themselves in these positions. you know people are watching you and are ready to take advantage of you.

so why put yourself in the hands of a cabby at 4am in a drunkin state. you make millions of dollars....have a professional car service in place to pick you up. for only $50 more.

Loser.

If you weren't there I don't know how you can be so quick to pass judgment on someone's actions.
If it turns out the cabbie in fact kept the doors locked on these young men then I think he deserved to be smacked. As a little mental experiment, think how this same situation would be perceived had there been two young females falsely imprisoned in the back of some cab.

Marcus - I admire your imagination to come up with a theory that makes it acceptable to double team an old cabdriver.

And why exactly would the cabbie have locked these two drunken stooges in his car? I could envision a scenario where a cabbie locks the doors if the customers didn't pay, but of course, the customers could likely unlock them doors themselves and simlply get out. But in that scenario, the cabbie is simply trying to prevent aholes from robbing him of services.

You figure they paid up and he just locked them in for the fun of it? Because really, who doesn't like being stuck in a cab with a couple of drunks heading home from Chippewa.

Well of course I'm not gonna defend this kids actions the day after; I don't know any better then the rest of you how the whole thing played out.

But it's been my experience that it takes two sides to escalate a conflict, And it amuses me a little how this all these comments express such shock and horror that some 20 year old guy got drunk and in a fight in Buffalo. That's practically the city motto!

Excellent!
I work in customer service in a fancy place and you would not believe how many athletes and others with money dont tip. The latest was McCarthy Gibson, he was in the other week and didnt leave a tip. Come on...us servers make below minimum wage and rely on tips for income.

I like how everyone assumes that Kane is guilty here just becasue of his status and one persons side of the story. I also like how people assume that because he makes money the cabbie deserved a tip. If the service was poor, then he doesn't deserve a thing. I have to say most cabbies are are a rare breed, and not always the model for excellent customer service. I'll wait to hear both sides of this story, but I'm having a hard time believing the cabbie.

Should the cabbie receive a broken nose if the service was poor?

That's the age-old question -

Should service industry professionals receive a broken nose if they don't fully satisfy the customer?

I guess we know where Patrick Kane comes down on the issue.

Well we know that the cabbie didn't receive a broken nose, and allegedly was scratched, although the video doesn't really show that he is. But since you want to bypass the legal system and go with one side of the story we can go an lock him up in GITMO.

I was basing the comment off the Buffalo News article that said the cabbie was being treated for a broken nose from the incident. Was that bad information?

I'm not sure if it was bad info or not. Just like I don't know if the info in this article is bad or not, however since people on this site are jumping all over Kane for allegedly not being a model citizen, it looks like the cabbie actually shouldn't of had this job.

will someone please explain to me what about this story is positive for Buffalo? How is this justified through Buffalo Rising's Mission statement to highlight the positive stories about Buffalo? I would love to hear someone try and explain that. Why is this worthy of BR but the press conference Kane was at about refurbishing a Buffalo hockey rink (an actual positive story for Buffalo) is not? PLEASE, someone explain that to me. A city rink gets an update? No story. Kane arrested for assaulting a cabbie... STORY!

I'm not letting this go though. I want an answer from Dan or Elena or Newell or someone at BR. I'd like an explaination as to why you failed to highlight the rink upgrade but couldn't pass on the cab story.

Leave the guy alone. No press knows the real story, they, like this hippie website want to make things bigger then they are about people who they are jealous of, wether it be there money or fame. For all we know the cabbie was the one who started the fight or maybe just James Kane was the one who was throwing punches etc... Pat Kane is a baby when it comes to fighting, just ask any NHLer.
I bet Patrick Kaleta loves seeing this happen to Kane!

I'm usually supportive of any NHLer to come out of WNY. However- based on EVERYTHING I've heard from anyone, Kane is an arrogant dou***. This incident fits perfectly with every other story I've ever heard about the kid.

Im not saying he is spoiled or a dou*** but i think in early stages of any incident like this, nobody know the real story and they just want to hear what they want to and on this post its usually anything that puts anybody rich or popular down.

It's funny to read all these comments, before any official word of what happened came out.

Sandy Beach was jumping to more conclusions yesterday on his radio show based on no evidence whatsoever (and I love Sandy Beach)

I'm not sticking up for athletes, most of them do commit these crimes, but this story is so unbelievable there is more to it. This morning that was proven by the Buffalo News article about the cabbie and the statements each attorney made about this being blown out of proportion. I trust a cabbie as much as I trust Michael Vick.

I would be pretty upset too if some cabby locked me in the car. Many of you are pretty quick to criticize a guy you don't know without knowing the facts of the incident.

I can't understand how this kid was brought up. Didn't anyone every tell him you are supposed to "tip" the cabby or anyone else in the service industry? I would like to see him try to get change in New York City!
For a guy making megabucks you would think he would be trying to spread a little of it around, especially in his home town. He should have handed the driver a $20 and told him to keep the change just like any of us "poor" people would have. Maybe after he pays his Celebrity attorney Paul Cambria he will think twice about not tipping
