'Neon' Lights Out At The HSBC Arena

‘Neon’ Lights Out At The HSBC Arena
Has anyone else noticed that the neon waves at the top of the HSBC Arena are no longer lit? Actually, it's been quite some time since they were working. I noticed the neon outage a while ago, but I assumed that someone was working on them. Nope. I've been asking around and nobody has a clear answer. The best answer is that the neon was not engineered properly to begin with. Is this another example of 'On time and under budget'? Sometimes, when there is a rush to get the job done... the devil is in the details, right?

The HSBC Arena opened for the '96 season. Thirteen seasons later, the colorful lights have been snuffed. It's unfortunate, because as the city skyline has finally added a couple of nice new feature buildings, it would be good to have the arena firing on all cylinders. After all, it is a beacon in a district that can look pretty dark at times. And you would think that industrial neon would last beyond a decade. How much did it cost to begin with? Maybe we could borrow some lights from the Peace Bridge?

Also, the HSBC Atrium to the left of the picture used to look pretty nice when they lit up the curved glass roof.

The exterior of HSBC is not the greatest. The atrium is the best part. Once inside, it is a great arena. Obviously, that is what counts. I love the open feel to it and the bars all seem to be in the right spots. It's a great building to see hockey in.

Love the HSBC Arena, but it definitely needs more light. On nights of use, the Arena should turn on its search lights for easy access and as a beacon for people to come. This is the City of Light, and we need more of it!

I've also noticed those neon lights on the arena have been out. I can't even remember the last time I saw them working.

Another spot that has some lights out is the Soldiers & Sailors Monument in Lafayette Square. There are a few spotlights that used to light up the monument and flags, but I haven't seen them working in over a year. I'm guessing either the city or Buffalo Place would be responsible for repairing them?

YES! Someone really needs to get these lights running. Also, the HSBC TOWER is pathetic and needs an overhaul to include LIGHT so it can be SEEN at NIGHT! Buffalo is a great skyline, but no-one can see it because it is dark. I have asked WGRZ (Channel 2) to do a story on this, but obviously there are more important stories....like covering the 33 with a park. LOL.

It would be great if the HSBC Arena had all its lights operating again. After all it is still a fairly new building. As for the HSBC Tower, that skyscraper is just a little too plain jane for illumination. If our economy ever improves, it would be awesome to see a mixed use skyscraper of at least 44 or 45 stories designed and built with 21st century cutting edge architecture that would be illuminated at night.

I have been wondering about the wave lights bring out, I am not sure when they were last lit but I miss the colorful waves and they should be fixed!! How expensive could it be to fix?

And I agree our city needs to it better lit at night, I know it costs $$ to have buildings lit but can't they figure out some sort of cheaper options, and it would be great to add to our skyline with more tall buildings like HSBC or maybe somehow the HSBC getting a make over? How about some decorative lighting for HSBC...maybe lighting added to the top? I am not sure exactly how or what can be done to spruce up the HSBC but it is our tallest building and looks like a bunker!

And I have posted this in other posts, the Skyway would look great lit up in the same way as Peace Bridge.

Perhaps they were annoying some of the ever increasing new residents downtown. Just a suggestion. When I looked at the views on the Avant website, I thought they might bother me if I had a direct view from my bedroom there. It wouldn't be beneath me to call and ask them to tone it down a bit.

We could ask OBAMA for some money to light up the entire skyline. I bet it could be justified if we asked in eco friendly terms. I bet Obama would send us a big check for something like this. It would show rejuvenation of a rust belt city on the mend.

When it comes to situations like this, just ask yourself... What can Obama do (WCOD).

i say just light up the perimeter of teh HSBC tower. There is not much you can do with lighting such a plain tower, but that would look better.

There's many ways to light that sucker up. LED floodlights would work well or there could be LED strips attached to the sides at various intervals like many skyscrapers in Hong Kong. Now that I think of it, HSBC stands for Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Company. Ever get the feeling we've been cheated?

Exactly...make Buffalo the city of light once again...it would be fitting with lighting on top of Key Towers and would look good visually at other end of downtown where HSBC is.

Some images of Hong Kong different lighting that I think would not be terribly difficult to add?!? They already do some seasonal lighting of the building.

And while we are at it...make the Skyway lit up up like this (Miami)

Lets give the circa 1971 HSBC Tower a new, more up to date exterior before placing floodlights on it.
