MSN Suggests a Buffalo Getaway

MSN Suggests a Buffalo Getaway
In an ever-expanding circle of media outlets that recognize the beauty of Buffalo, here is an MSN cityguide take on why people should visit the Queen City:

Secrets of the Rust Belt
Buffalo, New York is a crucible of innovative work both from highly influential artists like filmmaker and musician Tony Conrad, to CEPA Gallery, to the new alternative space Sugar City, but the crown jewel may be the Albright-Knox Art Gallery

A few years back they caused a stir in the art world when they sold off some significant classical work, creating a fund to acquire new contemporary work, long the museum's greatest strength. Featuring the largest public collection of Clyfford Still paintings, major work from artists like Anselm Kiefer, Mark Rothko and Jenny Holzer, and the cap-feather of being the first gallery to show the work of photographer Cindy Sherman, this museum is a secret treasure in one of the country's poorest cities.

To top off a visit, spend the rest of your afternoon across the street in Delaware Park, the centerpiece of Buffalo's extensive park-and-parkway system designed by Olmsted and Vaux -- yes, the same duo that did New York City's Central Park and Brooklyn's Prospect Park.

'Featuring the largest public collection of Clyfford Still paintings....'

Well, that's no longer true.

Welcome publicity, but god-awful writing and misleading descriptions.

The McMichael Collection is one of the best kept secrets within 90 minutes of Toronto, too. :)

My biggest suggestion for the Albright Knox is to stop hiding its classical collection.

Find a space to display it
Create another small museum if necessary because there is no museum in Buffalo specializing in period and antiquities related to art.

'... there is no museum in Buffalo specializing in period and antiquities related to art.'

Yes, art just isn't enough these days. If the Albright can't include art-related periods, isn't it time for a new museum in Buffalo that specializes in periods? It's a very visual medium.

Clifford Still paintings in the AKAG? WTF could they be? LOOK IN THE EFFIN BASEMENT!

your right PaulBuffalo but Torontoinians rarely venture into 905 unless going to the cottage and would find the Knox more elaborate and better presented in a very idyllic setting as well as get in some great shopping

Defender110, your comment about 905 made me laugh.

Yes, the Albright is an elaborate setting but the McMichael has the charms of its wonderful pastorale setting. The Group of Seven paintings are worthwhile and it's unfortunate that these artists -- the pillars of Canadian art -- are relatively unknown in the US. (Tom Thomson and Lawren Harris are two of my favorites.)
