Secrets of the Rust Belt
Buffalo, New York is a crucible of innovative work both from highly influential artists like filmmaker and musician Tony Conrad, to CEPA Gallery, to the new alternative space Sugar City, but the crown jewel may be the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
A few years back they caused a stir in the art world when they sold off some significant classical work, creating a fund to acquire new contemporary work, long the museum's greatest strength. Featuring the largest public collection of Clyfford Still paintings, major work from artists like Anselm Kiefer, Mark Rothko and Jenny Holzer, and the cap-feather of being the first gallery to show the work of photographer Cindy Sherman, this museum is a secret treasure in one of the country's poorest cities.
To top off a visit, spend the rest of your afternoon across the street
in Delaware Park, the centerpiece of Buffalo's extensive park-and-parkway system
designed by Olmsted and Vaux -- yes, the same duo that did New York
City's Central Park and Brooklyn's Prospect Park.

'Featuring the largest public collection of Clyfford Still paintings....'
Well, that's no longer true.
