Jewett Avenue Rehab Planned

Jewett Avenue Rehab Planned

A vacant apartment building near the corner of Jewett and Fillmore avenues is getting a new lease on life thanks to a grant by the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York.  The $70,000 affordable housing grant to Fillmore-Leroy Area Residents, Inc. (FLARE) to help finance the construction of the Jewett Avenue Apartments, which will provide eight units of affordable housing for very low-income families. Home Loan Bank members M&T Bank and First Niagara Bank submitted the applications for the funding.

The circa-1930, 5,810 sq.ft. masonry building is located 146 Jewett Avenue.  FLARE, which will operate the project, will provide supportive social services and referrals for residents who need educational assistance, legal services, nutritional services, and medical care.

"Affordable housing for hardworking New York families is a top priority and I am proud of the steps the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York has taken to make housing more attainable and allow for the revitalization of neighborhoods during these difficult economic times," says Representative Louise Slaughter (NY-28).

Better hurry before the city demolishes it.

great news for the area. Flare seems like a pretty good organization and anytime you can build low income housing and associate it with skill development, all the better. think about it a business incubator... but instead for people get on their own feet again.

I do hope that these programs \ services will be a mandatory part of getting into one of these units so that it can have a real positive impact on the street.

These are well built nice homes. It is a shame to see so many fall into disrepair. These are not the same homes as the Broadway Fillmore \ Fruit Belt area. Not immigrant cheap housing but it is a neighborhood filled with solid homes on nice sized lots.

I don't think I could even afford the kind of backyard I had when I lived in this neighborhood.

They're also planning on turning the Jewett-Fillmore intersection into a circle, to tie it into the Olmsted Park System. It'll be interesting to see how this area changes over the next few years.
