Captain Jack's Open for Business

GREAT to finally see this open. I like the awning, the goose-neck lighting and the simple yet tasteful lettering. Remember when this was that boarded-up old electronics shop for years? What an eyesore. Now.. what a difference. Does anyone know what's going in next door? Looks like there's more activity going on over there. This part of Elmwood has really come along.. thanks in large part to the huge success of the recently expanded Pano's across the street. Now if we can only get rid of all those empty houses across the street. Can you imagine how nice this whole block would look if the hotel proposal had come to fruition?
It would also be nice if the property owners down by Indian Gate and Subway took better care of their sidewalks/properties. All those overgrown weeds/grass/dying trees at curbside look awful. Come on, EVA... can't you do something about that?
Dying to try Captain Jack's. Great to see the new business on Elmwood is such a MAJOR improvement over what was there for years. Kudos to Johnson Brothers, the builder as well. The block is really improving, so let's keep up the momentum by identifying what's the next improvement target. The liquor store and subway replaced their awnings. India Gate needs a facelift and good riddance to the pizza place. Why not get Buffalo State's design department to give some facade advice to Elmwood's owners?
I ate there last week and was sadly disappointed.
Positives: The building looks great. I love seafood and was happy to see someone slinging fish on the 'wood.
Negatives: MORE FRIED FOOD. More of the same Buffalo fried food, I couldn't find anything on the menu that wasn't battered and fried. I opted for the coconut shrimp platter and my girlfriend had the chicken fingers. Nothing special at all. If you're going to serve fried food in this city...you better bring your "A" game. The fingers were soggy and poorly dipped in the standard medium sauce and the coconut shrimp probably came out of a bag from BJ's. The fries were cold and soggy and the service was slow, not to mention that I never received my sweet potato fries after asking twice.
I love development in this city, but I won't be supporting this place.
For goodness sake; are you really complaining that a fish'n' chip shop specializes in fried foods? Really?? Also, it's completely erroneous to present Buffalo as some sort of "fried food" haven, at least any moreso than any other American city. I've lived in NYC (Manhattan, not Queens), LA, and London, and fried foods were readily available everywhere in all those cities. One of the most thriving takeout shops in lower Manhattan is called A Salt & Battery, a Brit-style chippy that also serves deep-fried bangers (sausage)and a variety of other fried foods.
You can be anti-fried foods all you want, but your complaint is akin to choosing to eat at Fat Bob's and complaining about the existence of fatty BBQ meats on the menu. There are plenty of healthy, low-fat, vegetarian and vegan choices in Buffalo -- eat at those places. A fish'n'chip shop sells fish fries. Fries. Fry. Fried food. Come on now.
I'm due to try Captain Jack's at lunch tomorrow and will report back with a review...
I loved the Sea Dog I had for dinner last night. It was bigger than i expected, and fresh. The onion peels are good but the sauce was even better. Cant wait to try the rest of the menu, kudos!
O...and my roomate made a great point about the curb side pick up. He witnessed a few people parking there and not for Captain Jacks pickup. A woman kept asking people to move, but it looked like a pain. They have signs up, saying no parking during the day, but the street still had the white marks, indicating a parking spot. Someone has to get rid of those...or figure out some solution.
Is this place closed, already? Passed it around 4:30pm Saturday, and the windows were covered with paper, lights out, big SORRY! sign on the door.
Never mind ... I checked the sign again: Closed until Spring (for ice fishing?).
Gone and dead, far as I can see. But BR only has "open now!" and "soon to come!" news, so "closed so soon" doesn't appear here.
Follow-up on BR is a big No-No .
I had alot of fun being a part of this...fish-stand, I am the Captain who fourth commandeered this establishment, and to my sorrow, I could not however attend me crew, turned my back for too long (absent for two weekends of a cruise) and they were closed down, but yet to return again this February when fish season starts up again, and hopefully to it's strongest. I hope to be a part of this once again, it was just too good of fish to let go of.
We'll be up and running once again, this February, you wait and see!
Captain Jack's will DEFINATELY be back in just a few short weeks. Ice fishing is going well and we will be back in the shop soon. Debating on what hours to be open. Late Night? Lunch and Dinner only, etc. The Captain and I are listening.
See you soon

Had a fish fry from there last night - very good. The mac salad was a bit dry, but that's just a decoration in comparison to the size of the fish portion. I'm going back some time this week to check out other menu selections. Check out the pirhanna in the salt tank - seems too cute to be a predator.
