Support For High Speed Rail Connecting Upstate Cities

Support For High Speed Rail Connecting Upstate Cities

Mayor Byron Brown has announced his support for the High Speed Rail New York Coalition, an organization pushing for the construction of a New York State high speed rail line.  According to City Hall, the Coalition "recently submitted a report on the regional impacts of High Speed Inter City Passenger Rail along the Empire Corridor in New York State to Administrator Joseph C. Szabo."  The coalition feels that the time is right to act on this initiative because of the opportunity to take advantage of federal stimulus money to help build such a system.

Brown supports the idea due to environmental issues and ease of transportation advantages that go along with public rail transportation, as well as the business and educational opportunities a high speed rail system across the Empire Corridor could potentially provide.  "I am proud to support and be a part of this coalition because of the benefits it will bring to the City of Buffalo, and all of Western New York," said Mayor Brown. "Connecting Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Albany, and the North Country, by High Speed Rail will produce strong, visible, and sustained results transforming our cities, regions, and rural communities."

The High Speed Rail New York Coalition is made up of local governments, chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, metropolitan planning organizations and tourism bureaus across Upstate New York.  The report that the coalition submitted to Joesph Szabo on July 31st focused on the economic development, positive environmental impact, and quality of life benefits this rail system can provide.

There is so little traffic in the city and downtown that he should support high speed bicycle lanes or streets. Personally I would settle for more bike lane designations on all streets leading to downtown. That would be innovative and original. I would even like to see him attend some of the block parties by using his bicycle and I would accept the fact that the BPD bike patrol would have to accompany him. Shorts and a t-shirt instead of the suit and tie would be appropriate.

Why not support both high speed rail and expanded bicycle infrastructure?

We need to support all of the various transportation options that have proved to greatly benefit cities. Walkable, Bikeable, Public Transit with trains to serve the metro region efficiently and of course cars. This is our advantage over the sprawling suburbs and we need to capitalize on this asset instead of sacrificing our neighborhoods to the convenience of suburban commuters.
Not blaming the burbs or claiming they are evil, just saying it is time to do what is in the best interest of Buffalo.

If there were an inter-urban or frequent inter-city commuter rail/high speed rail....

If the ticket price were say $35 and the difference in airfares between the same flight in Rochester versus Buffalo was greater than $35...WHY WOULD ROCHESTER NEED TO SPEND MILLIONS OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS TO KEEP THEIR AIRPORT. ROCHESTERIANS COULD SIMPLY HOP THE TRAIN AND USE BUFFALO NIAGARA INTERNATIONAL AS CANADIANS AND ALL THOSE FROM SOUTHERN TIER, MEDINA, NIAGARA FALLS, BATAVIA, ETC DO.

now aint that a kick in the head...after years of elitist rochesterians looking down on smelly stupid blue collar buffalo of steel, oil and grain...it could very well be that rochesterians close their airport and use ours.

Snarky comment, I know, but in the world outside of Buffalo, a 1950s-era German EMU isn't exactly considered high-speed.

I was thinking the same thing.

BTW, what took so long for the mayor to get onboard? Other upstate mayors have been

Why did it take so long for Brown to get onboard?

Brown is of the same clothe as Buffalo State's Howard. A do nothing who is in their position only because of race and looks to the media to wallpaper over their incompetitence with publicity.

What took Brown so long...Brown could care less about jobs or infrastructure or community (other than the african american community) ... Brown simply figured that during a re-election campaign he could get free publicity using the mayors office.

Thats all...its just that simple. Either ambivalence, incompetence or opportunism...or all the above...you choose...but dont put lipstick on the pig and think that Brown is a visionary in the mayors office.

I BELIEVE THAT MOST OF YOU DON'T GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS DO! MANY GREAT IDEAS HAVE BEEN FUNNELED THROUGH OUR MAYOR AND YES THAT WHAT I SAID IS FUNNELED. HE IS ONLY ONE MAN AND SO MANY FOLKS HAVE COME TO HIM WITH BRILLIANT IDEAS AND HE BUTS THEM OUT TO THE PUBLIC AND THEY TAKE IT FROM THERE. IF YOU ONLY COULD PUT HALF OF THE ENERGY THAT YOU DO INTO COMPLAINING ABOUT BUFFALO AND HIM, INTO BEING PROBLEM SOLVERS, THAN WE COULDN'T KEEP UP WITH THE BOOM OF GOOD THING IN BUFFALO! (YOU'RE EITHER PART OF THE PROBLEM OR PART OF THE SOLUTION, WHICH IS IT!)

Dear timatbuffalo, unfortunately the citizens of Buffalo arent given a line item budget to approve, the citizens of Buffalo do not control city hall or its organizations, etc.

Buffalonians have had no luck in boosting city inspections, changing laws to foreclose on property owners who do not maintain their properties, or change laws to add citations onto property taxes to put liens on properties preventing them from being sold, etc.

Buffalonians have had no luck in opposing the control of civil service unions and their control over the election process.

Buffalonians have had no luck in redirecting city taxes from unions and patronage to infrastructure like rehabs rather than demolition, like repaved and recobbled streets, street lights, curbs, sidewalks, playgrounds, signs, water and sewar mains, etc.

Please DO NOT be niave tim, Brown and previous mayors are the leaders and leaders set the priorities...often ignoring the needs of the citizens.
