Are You Ready For Some Football? Bills Answer: No

Are You Ready For Some Football? Bills Answer: No
The second to last pre-season game is generally the most telling as starters get the most playing time of any of the pre-season affairs.  The Bills played their second to last pre-season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last night, and the Bills offensive starters played into the third quarter.  The result: a 17-0 snoozefest that wasn't nearly as close as the score indicates.  Dick Jauron's consecutive seasons of 7-9, 7-9, and 7-9 may be in jeopardy as it's hard to see how the Bills win 7 games this year.  The Las Vegas sports books apparently have the same view as the Bills over/under win total for the 2009 season is set at 7.5 (with the under being the slight favorite).

It would be unfair to say the Bills starting offense did nothing last night; Edwards did throw a touchdown pass to Pittsburgh LB James Farrior.  Edwards, who may see two possessions of work in the Bills final pre-season game against Detroit, now has 3 interceptions and 0 touchdowns this pre-season.  The Bills surprised many by operating out of a no-huddle offense though it's hard to see any benefits as the starters still haven't scored a touchdown in four pre-season games.

With their new no-huddle attack, the Bills were outgained 209-50 in the first half last night.  The time of possession was just as lopsided with the Steelers holding the ball for almost 22 of 30 minutes.

After the Bills third pre-season game, Jerry Sullivan said it's time for Edwards to 'cut loose' and start throwing the ball down the field.  Well, Edwards didn't throw the ball down the field successfully against the Steelers.  And while the Bills are still playing without TO, who is nursing his toe and twittering, they simply don't seem capable of making enough big plays.  Even the normally reliable special teams have gotten in on the mediocrity this pre-season by giving up a fake punt for a touchdown against the Titans and getting a chip shot field goal attempt blocked against the Steelers.

It's positively frightening to think that the Bills open the regular season in 15 days on national television against the Patriots - a team we've beat just twice this century with the last victory coming on September 7, 2003.  That's 2,184 days for those of you keeping track at home.

I wouldn't say "the sky is falling" until we lose a regular season game. Pre-season is deceptive, no teams run a real gameplan or use the plays they would use in the regular season. It's a very very watered down playbook. Getting TO, Schobel, Fred Jackson, and Demetrius Bell (who might start at LT) back will help immensely.

If nothing else, Maybin looked good with a sack and a few QB pressures.

It's very simple: **** Jauron must be fired! He just stands there and looks lost in space on the sideline. I would suggest that this team needs a coach like MIKE DITKA! A coach like Ditka would DEMAND performance and motivation from this team. Someone get Ditka's number and beg him to come to buffalo. The Bears of the the 1980's were hardcore and had heart. We need this!

Please not Ditka. Yeah, yeah, the Bears. What about the Saints? "Here's all my draft picks: I just want Ricky!"

I like Jauron, from the standpoint of personality and smarts. But his time management is poor, game plans are often predictable, he seems to inspire mediocrity from the players, and the seasonal collapses of team confidence are troubling (start 5-2, end 2-7). This season's not looking auspicious. Be nice if TO could spark them to a few wins, even if being the hero did go to his head.

Defense hints that they might get good. Offense sure needs them to. Right now, they're just running the hurry off.

Bring in Jim Haslett when the UFL folds.

I looked a their schedule last night and was thinking I'd be surprised if they pulled off 4 wins. The under at 7.5 seems like an easy bet. I'm not a gambling man, but with Jauron at the helm I sure don't see them getting to .500.

we haven't had a decent football team since the Jim Kelly days....and the problem has been the same since....the game of football is played on the offensive line down in the trenches....you can have a so-so QB & Rb work miracles with a cohesive O-line....nevermind T.O. being the answer if Trent doesn't have the time or Marshawn doesn't have a hole open up it will be the same old same old

Same old, same old!

This is all a clever ruse. Jauron is hustling the division into thinking the Bills are going to be an easy target... little do they know!

It will always be funny that "Dick" Jauron gets blocked out in the comments. Jauron is the definition of a mediocre coach. I am brass enough to predict that the Bills will break the streak of 7-9 this year and will finish 8-8. Can someone tell me what exactly made Turk Shoenert qualified for his promotion? The Bills are in trouble.

I wonder if the Bills being a bargain basement losing team is a strategy to keep the Bills in Western NY?

I mean if the Bills are a winning superbowl team then they will have a premium and sell for such a high dollar value that no one in Western New York could afford to buy them when Wilson dies.

However, if the Bills are the worst team in the league claiming and have such a negative losing reputation that they sell at a discount and people dont want the Bills then it would be easier to follow the Sabres and find an owner in Western New York.

Just a thought....but owners have found more bizarre business strategies to pick their successor!
