ReUse: The Perfect Storm
It's safe to say that Buffalo ReUse (BRU) is an entity that has seen its share of upheavals in recent weeks.
As a result, benefactors of BRU, the John R. Oishei Foundation, have taken some heat concerning the origins of a building at 635 South Park being offered to BRU through Oishei. Specifically, suspicions were raised among ReUse members about the relationship between Oishei and Daniel Black of Jamestown, NY, owner of the building.  These allegations grew from individuals in the membership who felt that any talk of moving BRU to Buffalo's 1st Ward, rather than the portion of the East Side BRU has primarily dedicated itself to, is counter to BRU's original mission.
Add to this the fact that news of the building came on the heels of interim CEO Harvey Garrett's firing

Ten Buffalo Public Schools Taken Off State Watch List

It might sound strange to some, but the Buffalo Public School District has reason to celebrate.  The school system has been plagued with drastic problems for years; however, a major achievement was announced last week when the New York State Education Department took ten Buffalo public schools off the Department's watch list.  Four of those schools had been listed as SURR (Schools Under Registration Review).  Here is a list of the ten schools, all of which are now "Schools in Good Standing"

Buffalo Neighborhoods: What Defines Them?

All the talk about neighborhoods (click here for map) prompted me to write down something that I do a lot of thinking about, the places, names, spaces, neighborhoods, communities in and around Buffalo. It has been kind of a hobby for me for years. What defines Buffalo, Kenmore, Tonawanda and Cheektowaga? Where are the walkable urban areas in the city or region?

Firefighters’ Funeral
This past Friday, a funeral was held for Lt. Charles McCarthy and Firefignter Jonathan Croom who lost their lives in a fire at an East Side deli.
Anyone who ventured down Delaware Avenue in the evening last week saw the fire trucks lining the Avenue and a sea of blue uniforms in the parking lot of Amigone Funeral Home.  It was a poignant sight, Buffalo firemen paying tribute to their fallen comrades.

“Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely”
For anyone who attended the Silent Exchange electronic music festival at The Yard on Saturday, I am sorry that you had to witness Buffalo's Men in Blue in such a sorry state. As fifty young music fans stood around watching a DJ spin on stage, Buffalo Police filed onto private property and threatened the crowd to disband or pay the consequences. Despite the fact that the proper permits had been filed with City Hall, that would allow the music to go on until 10pm, Buffalo Police would not listen to reason, only resorting to 'police state' tactics as the young music fans looked on in bewilderment

Are You Ready For Some Football? Bills Answer: No
The second to last pre-season game is generally the most telling as starters get the most playing time of any of the pre-season affairs.  The Bills played their second to last pre-season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last night, and the Bills offensive starters played into the third quarter.  The result: a 17-0 snoozefest that wasn't nearly as close as the score indicates.  Dick Jauron's consecutive seasons of 7-9, 7-9, and 7-9 may be in jeopardy as it's hard to see how the Bills win 7 games this year.  The Las Vegas

Reader Commentary by Scott Krajeski

After writing an editorial for the Buffalo News, I decided to approach Buffalo Rising about the topic.  A lifelong Buffalonian, I've seen the city through many ups and downs.  As Buffalo loses its reputation as an industrial haven, we seek a new identity.  Through

Blue is IN on Delaware

Delaware Avenue sports a few powder blue residential buildings and recently got a heavy dose of blue glass at Avant.  Not to be outdone, owner Righteous Babe Records has joined in with the building at 340 Delaware Avenue south of Tupper Street.

There's not much to say here.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  The City and public generally have no say in paint schemes outside of preservation districts.  An irate emailer isn't pleased however:

Can you believe this??  This is the former Naples

Black Rock: Why Not Make This the Place to Be?

Black Rock is one of Buffalo's most historic neighborhood names dating back to the city's very beginnings.  The name comes from an outcropping of black stone that was ironically removed when the Erie Canal was constructed, making its way to Buffalo. Many know Black Rock as Buffalo's Erie Canal terminus rival and probably have little or no visual image of what the neighborhood looks like, or where it actually is.  It is safe to say that most WNYers think of Black

The long-vacant Cloister restaurant is expected to have a new owner soon with plans to redevelop the site.  Business First reports that chiropractor Dr. Scott Croce, brother of restaurateur/developer Mark Croce, is in contract to purchase the property at 472 Delaware, corner of Virginia.

Croce's plan is to construct a new two or three-story building on the prime Allentown Historic Preservation District site and relocate his practice from 369 Delaware.  Space will be available for

New Era in The New York Times, New Website
Go anywhere in the US, and you're bound to see people wearing hats, and I'd be willing to bet the majority of these hats have "New Era" stitched on them somewhere.  New Era is also the supplier to every Major League Baseball team, all minor league baseball associates, a number of US colleges and the NBA and NHL.

The New York Times recently caught wind of how "this economy" is affecting people's spending habits, and since New Era is basically the Fiji water of baseball caps, the company
