The Gateway Saloon or what?

The Gateway Saloon or what?
Now that the Genesee Gateway project is underway, it's kinda fun to look in through some of the windows and imagine what might be in store for the first floor spaces. A few days ago I peered into one of the commercial storefronts and noticed what looked to be an old dusty saloon. My curiosity got the best of me, so I began to send along some emails wondering if anyone knew what the place was in a former life. One of the responses that came back was that the former property owner had pulled the bar out of Bennigan's Restaurant in anticipation that a restaurateur would move in. Obviously that did not happen. Then, a short while ago, Doug Swift (CityView Properties partner) emailed me this:

"While it looks like it has been there forever, it actually was installed by the former owner Bill Genrich about 15 years ago.  When he was trying to restore the block, he salvaged the bar from another location, trying to lure a restaurant operator to locate in the space.  We are keeping it and are attempting to do the same.  The space works great for a restaurant and the bar is a fantastic period piece.  We have had a couple of interested parties but at this stage no one has committed."

That has got to be one of the largest bars in the city, rivaling the Old Pink in length. There is an exposed beam ceiling and a giant mirror against the brick wall behind the bar. Check out the rustic wood floors and the expansive room for seating, dancing, pool tables, etc. When I look at the layout, I can't help but picture a historic saloon with ceiling fans and Can-Can dancers. What do you think it should be converted into?

The bar is from Charlie Bubbles, a short lived bar and restaurant in the McKinley Mall in the late 80's early 90's.

I'm all for can-can dancers, but protesters from local churches would probably appear with placards in minutes.

This bar is from Bennigan's or Charlie Bubble's? What, no shoot-outs occurred here? No famous folks from the Pan-Am era etched their names into the wood? Grover Cleveland didn't meet a paramour here? Well, I hope some good history is created when the place opens because the bar is beautiful.

1. You would never find can-can dancers that would look like that in Buffalo unless that saloon is THE place to work. Add on 15 lbs to each and it might be more realistic.

2. This saloon set-up has great potential to be a Buffalo signature restaurant/bar with possibly an old western type of feel or even just a normal place. If I had the money, I would jump on this project stat.

Man you must live a sheltered life or not get out. I see women (from B-Lo) in a professional office setting like this all day. Must suck where you live/work.

The pictures don't do it justice. I've often wondered about this place. Its one of the most beautiful bars in Buffalo. It also looks like theres an outdoor patio on the second floor. Any idea if thats true? I hope someone takes the time to bring this place back to life. I can't say enough good things about the space.

I suppose there could have been two Charlie Bubbles, but the only one I know of in Buffalo was on Maple Road just east of Millersport Highway, approximately where the Marriott Residence Inn is now.

Wasn't there a Charlie Bubbles in Amherst too? I wanna say it was right by UB on Maple.

no matter where it is from or what the age of it is, it works perfect in this building. I hope something can come of it.

Indeed it is a cool space but quite large and difficult to fill on a daily basis. And yes there was a Charlie Bubbles in Hamburg
