Row, row, row... or paddle a boat upon Hoyt Lake

Row, row, row... or paddle a boat upon Hoyt Lake
Not only are the rowboats on Hoyt Lake back in operation, there is a new model to test out. It's the six-hour canoe built by the Maritime Center and I must say that it's piqued my interest for a couple of reasons. I didn't get to take it out on the lake yet, but I intend to in the near future. Why? Well, the attendant on duty told me that it was an interesting boat to maneuver. Besides the maneuvering, the six-hour canoe is one of the models that anybody can go build down at the Maritime Center. That's right... instead of going out and buying a canoe, you can head over to the Outer Harbor and build one for yourself (in just one afternoon). So if you enjoy the model at Hoyt Lake, go build one for yourself.

Other than the six-hour canoe (this model has a clear viewing window built into the bottom), there is now a recycling station at Hoyt Lake. I was happy to see that people now have the option to dispense aluminum and plastic canisters at the park. Especially since many of the boaters are bringing their own food and drinks. Yesterday there were three rowboats drifting lazily around the lake. I wonder if they know that it's OK to go under the bridge in order to visit the Japanese Garden? Along with the boats, it would be nice to see some bike and kayak rentals. Oh, and some remote control sailboats too! FYI - anyone can go launch a personal watercraft such as a canoe or kayak on Hoyt Lake. Stay tuned for more Delaware Park news over the weekend.

*Boats are operational every day but Monday.

Better this than shoot, shoot, shoot your neighbors on Hoyt Street: http://www.buffalonews.com/437/story/721511.html

And it seems the same feud has carried over into today, in the same area: http://www.buffalonews.com/258/story/722699.html

Are the police going to get on top of this before it escalates--?

The boats on Hoyt Lake are beautiful. I took some friends of mine that are Olmsted fans out on the lake a few weeks ago, and they were quite impressed.

The views and the peacefulness of the place are a real treat.

We are kayakers and we are thrilled to learn that we can launch on Hoyt Lake. We have walked around it a thousand times with our golden retreiver Bentley. Now, we will also enjoy it from the water. Thank you to everyone who works so hard to keep this area nice. We appreciate it. Joe and Mary Ann.

Im sure BassPro will love that people can build their own boats at the Maritime Center rather than buy them at the store (sarcasm but there will always be some that build and some that buy).

Please see if you can paddle up the Scajaquada Creek to the Barge Canal. If you can then it would be a significant lobbying tool to get responsible parties to apply funding: dredging, storm over-flow, sewage, pollution, natural growth along banks, etc.

Ive been to parks that have a fisheries or hatcheries to help restore estuaries. Something like that would be really cool somewhere along the Scajaquada Creek and Buffalo River.

Connecting Forest Lawn, Delware Park, Scajaquada Creek, the Erie Barge Canal...with City Ship Canal and Buffalo River would be a really wonderful regional resource.

I love kayaking...and hiking. Its incredible that we are opening up this resource.
