As far as green roofs go, this one might win an award for being the smallest. Despite its size, the sustainable shed will hopefully pack a big punch when it comes to showing people the benefits of being green. Originally built for the Junior League Show House Sustainability Project, the shed was dismantled and reassembled (at Urban Roots) by landscape architect Joy Kuebler. All of the pieces used to build the shed came from Buffalo ReUse. And of course the crucial feature, the green roof, will be maintained by Urban Roots (and Mother Nature of course).
The plants on top of the shed will help to maintain a cool temperature within the structure. Plants of choice are succulents due to their ability to retain water and their shallow growing medium. This is a fun project to observe. The green benefits can easily be transferred to larger projects - the important aspects shown hers can be viewed in a very digestible manner. So often we hear about living roofs, but don't quite get the full picture since there are none around to check out. This one is not only practical and easy to build, it is beautiful, efficient easy to maintain at the same time.
