Garden Walk Buffalo 2009: MS's Blogger Really Liked Us

Garden Walk Buffalo 2009: MS’s Blogger Really Liked Us
As we told you in an earlier post, Stacey Hirvela, blogger on marthastewart.com, was going to be in Buffalo for Garden Walk this past weekend.

Well, she came.  And she liked what she saw.  Sure, who wouldn't, but Hirvela wrote some beautiful things about Buffalo, its homes and gardens, its people, and even businesses.  Urban Roots got a very nice boost, as well they should.  Wait until you see where she ate...

Some of the comments Hirvela made on her blog are as follows:

"My weekend in Buffalo was fantastic, I can speak about it only in superlatives. It was one of the most wonderful experiences I've been involved with during my time with the magazine, so forgive me for gushing!"

"Both my husband and I fell in love with Buffalo. Everywhere you go, you see beautiful homes and amazing architecture."

"The thing that impressed me most about Buffalo is the people and their level of community involvement. The Martin house has 400 volunteers, for example. There is the individual citizen-funded  21st Century Fund. There are all sorts of community gardens and community beautification projects like the 16th Street Block Alliance (a very cool stop on the Garden Walk)."

"As a gardener, though, I was absolutely floored by Urban Roots Community Garden Center."

"Most people wouldn't think of Buffalo as an epicenter of American horticulture, but it looks like gardening may be their official pastime."

And from Fine Gardening Magazine:

"Kids selling lemonade, home owners proudly perched on their porches smiling and waving to the eager public parading through their yards and streets. I mean talk about a garden party!"

"Buffalo provided a warm welcome and a free inspirational show of 341 home gardens throughout its community last weekend."

Ah, fresh eyes and their clear perspective.  This is yet another coup for the Garden Walk organizers.  Congrats!

Those last two quotes are actually attributed to ANOTHER blog at ANOTHER magazine, Fine Gardening. That review is found here:

I think there should be a moment of silence for the sacrificial grass/lawns of the busier gardens. May they have time to heal from the wet trampling they received over the weekend with some much needed time off.

I had the chance to take Stacey around to a few gardens on Saturday. We started on my street, Lancaster Avenue. After we'd done the eight gardens here, we hopped in the car and she told me, before we'd gotten to any other gardens, that if she'd only seen the eight Lancaster Avenue gardens, it still would have been the best garden tour she'd ever been on–and we had 333 more to go!

Short commutes afford Buffalonians the time to care for their homes and gardens. Most striking is the beauty of modest and average homesteads.
