Senior Associate Gardening Editor for Martha Stewart Living will be in Buffalo this weekend, taking in as much of Garden Walk Buffalo 2009 as she can. On Radioblog, she states: I've never been to Buffalo before, so if you have any recom... Read More
Thank you, BRO readers. Your votes for the best places for Guy Fieri to visit during his Buffalo journey were heard, and he made good. I met up with him at Sophia's on Military Road this morning, and I have to say that any national celebrit... Read More

Leave a commentAlready sent Guy a recommendation - Amy's Place. Bruce Bowl!
Times like this when I wish the _old_ Pano's was still around: four stools, four tables, and that's it. Same thing with the bars on Chippewa that catered to the homeless.
Too many dive bars to mention; suggest the remaining old-school corner Polish bars on the East Side, Crow's Nest in Amherst, and anything in South Buffalo.
Vizzi's... Monster Burger, voted #1 burger in WNY, awesome food, great people
i know we should be buffalo centric but grovers 12 ounce burgers were made for this show!
Well I will just say for Beef on Weck there is NO place better than the Bar Bill in East Aurora...and actually they have some of the best wings in Buffalo as well!
I second Vizzi's. I'd like to nominate the Old Pink for a Steak Sandwich. Although not within the Buffalo City limits Rock Bottom on Transit (near Grover's) makes an awesome burger, and Elmo's on Millersport has some fantastic food. I would tell him to stay away from Jim's Steak Out, and Duffs as they are by far the most over rated places in the area.
Sterling Place Tavern - If not the best, one of the best burgers in Buffalo, some of the best hot chicken wings i have had (the hot are actually Hot), awesome strip steak sandwich, sausage plate, great fish fry, the 'Yumbo' sandwich, and huge homemade perogies. Oh yea, they also have one of the best beer selections in the city.
Duffs overrated? Apparently you have never eaten there.
I would recommend Duff's on Sheridan. The wings are unmatched and it's been there, what? The 50's? Great food + great atmosphere + great history is exactly the formula this show runs on.
Sorry, i wasnt the one who commented on Duffs, but I agree 100% on that persons comment, unless you like soggy wings swimming in a shallow tasting hot sauce.
Slomba's----Tuesday Night Super Bionic beers for $2 in the 32 ounce green plastic cup!
we can keep this guy busy forever. lagniappes. texas hots. coles. founding fathers. santesarios. and on and on and on. we've got more family style or greek, greasy spoons in all of the united states. i've been to few other places in which you can get a greasy, quick meal at a drunken state at 4am, then buffalo.
We eat out quite a bit also and would send him the the following places:
Anchor Bar ( for the wings)
Chefs ( for spaghetti parm)
The Flafel Bar ( great flafel)
Teds (hot dogs)
Andersons ( custard)
Sterling ( fish fry)
Chiavettas ( chicken) at the erie county fair or a non profit fundraiser around town
And he could do a show from:
The Taste of Buffalo or
The Wing Fest or
The Erie County Fair
Schwabl's for the beef on weck with german potato salad. But it's not a diner, drive-in, or dive.
And I second the Chiavetta's nomination.
Good fish Fry- Casey's on Amherst St. or Hamlin House on Franklin.
Best homemade meatballs- Angies Pizza House on Niagara St.(with spaghetti or as a sub).
For a greasy breakfast- Nicks on Amherst St. or Georges on Niagara St.
How about the place (sorry I don't know the name) that sold the "junkyard dog" at the Taste of Buffalo.
Duff's has been around since at least the early 1950s. My parents met there in ... oh, 1953 or 1954, and it was already there for quite a while. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, it was among Buffalo's "out in the country" hotspots, along with Crow's Nest and some other "dance halls" that were considered the hip, happening places of that time.
most of the places mentioned are way cool.
guy fieri, on the other hand, seems like a huge douche.
eloquently stated. agreed.
Wiechec's Lounge at 1748 Clinton Street in Kaisertown has great fish fries, french fries and gravy, chicken fingers and anything fried.
The Silo in Lewiston. The tastiest greasy meal in the area and what a great view.
Hey, let's not forget Niagara County folks!
Shwabel's? I thought was the worst restaurant I ever ate at. The roast beef was too thick and gross. The fish fry was brutal aswell. Duffs wings are small and nothing better than most chain places. Nothing as bad as Schwabels though!!!
I recommend chef's (parm), la nova (bbq wings) gabriels gate (wings), bocce pizza, and bar bill (wings and beef on weck.)
You might want to try Schwabl's again and ask for thinly sliced, as they do it to order. If that doesn't do it for you, stick to your cookies.
Schwabl's gets the highest ratings from customers as well as travel and food critics (Gourmet magazine; RoadFood.com; 10Best.com; etc.)
- RoadFood.com main entry where it is designated a "TOP PICK: "The beef is cut to order into thin, rare slices severed from a center-cut round roast."
- Expedia/CityGuide: "A rocksalt and seed-encrusted roll, kummelweck gets dipped in au jus and stuffed with thin slices of tender roast beef."
- I have no affiliation with Schwabl's except that my visiting friends insist I take them there. For some, it is their favorite restaurant in the world.
I tend to agree, i have been to Schwabl's 1 time and it wasnt that great, so i have stuck with my stand by places for beef on weck since. I have had Charlie the Butcher many many times and thats pretty good. By far my favorite place for a beef on weck is Eckl's, the beef is always nice and rare and is like butta.
Since it's DDD, we should only refer hole in the walls & dives, not chains like Rock Bottom. Here's what I recommend:
-Ulrich's has great food, plus it's the oldest joint in town
-Lafayette Tap Room Pulled Pork is legit, BBQ spaghetti is
good too
-911 Tavern (S Buffalo) wings are legendary
-I love Lagniappe's BBQ Shrimp Po-Boy
-Eddie Ryan's Pot Roast Sandwich is awesome...but I've only
had it at Erie Co Fair & The Taste
-Ted's is a Buffalo staple, can't forget about that
-The Pink's Steak Sandwich
-Donnie's has great BBQ...kind of a tough sell with their location tho
-Amy's is a great little diner too
The Rock Bottom I speak of isn't a chain. It's "Ruzzines Rock Bottom" a locally owned joint. The bar itself is a dive, the dining area not so much. However not all the places Guy goes to are actual dives. Teds is a local chain and absolutely not a dive, so based on your criteria it shouldn't it be off the list?
i second the 911 tavern. awesome burger & fries! and most definitely a dive...
Lone Star
Lagniappes
Fat Bob's
Scharff's
Charlie the Butcher
The Hatch
As far as DDD is concerned, the two places that my wife and I vote for that epitomize Buffalo as well as the show are Duff's and Ted's.
You posted this at a good time Elena because Guy Fieri is coming August 16 to the Seneca Niagara Casino.

I would vote for Schwabl's (he'd love to watch how they prepare the roast beef.) I also think Scharf's is a must, and Betty's would be good because of their creativity.
swistons beef and keg in tonawanda for roast beeg
Soos- in North Tonawanda for Fish Fry Friday
Ulrich's, Bar Bill, Sterling Tavern, Scharf's, Polish Villa, Slavic Bazzar, Joe's Deli, Old Man River/Mississippi Muds, Betty's, Pete 'n Paul's, Founding Fathers, 99 Fast Food... (Can I stop now?)
Unfortunately, I hear that he has already scoped the area out and his staff has called at least one local business owner to ask them to send in a video. I'm sure none of you would ever tell friends, relatives or even enemies about this restaurant I speak of (no names, sorry).
Voice your opinions directly vie email @ DDDinfo@mac.com (don't forget to include your contact info).
I usually keep my options within city limits, however, The Bar-Bill and Grover's both belong on any short list of DDD's in Buffalo...
Steve's Pig and Ox... by far has the best roast beef in Buffalo...

i haven't watched his show but i'm looking forward to seeing anthony bourdain no reservations on july 27 when he tours rust belt cities ( Detroit, Buffalo, and Baltimore. Although is Baltimore really rustbelt?)
I don't know about DDD, but that guy on Man vs Food should come to buffalo. i don't know what eating challenges there are in buffalo, but I'd love to how he handles Duff's hot wings. forget anchor bar.

Baltimore is most definitely a "rust belt" town. I was there a few weeks ago for the first time driving around on the main expressways and it was like fifty miles of Lackawanna.
