Irish Pubs in Buffalo: D'Arcy McGee's

Irish Pubs in Buffalo: D’Arcy McGee’s

With a crowded market of restaurants and bars in Buffalo, there is one common theme that has cut through the clutter and has proven to be a successful concept and rather enjoyable experience. I am talking about the popular Irish Pub scene in Buffalo, which is chock-full of authentic food, drinks, music and history. This article is the first of a series that will explore many of Buffalo's outstanding traditional Irish pubs and the Irish entertainment that is offered.

First on the list is D'Arcy McGee's Irish Pub, located right in the heart of the downtown scene at the corner of Franklin and Chippewa. One appealing aspect of this pub is the authentic Irish craftsmanship, designed by Gemmell Giffin and Dunbar, who recreated the warmth of an Irish Pub using the same materials and designs that have stood for centuries in Ireland. Every detail of the pub was designed and crafted in Ireland, hand picked from various auction houses in Ireland, and shipped to Buffalo to create the feeling of being in a pub right in the heart of the Emerald Isle.

This June, D'Arcy McGee's will be celebrating eight years of business, and in recognition of this mile stone, will be redesigning the menu. "Our goal is to try and incorporate more Irish menu items in the fall," stated Connor Hawkins, general manager. The soon to be added items include more fish, pork, shanks, lamb, and an Irish banoffee pie; just to mention a few. Currently, one can visit this pub and enjoy award-winning Shepherd's Pie, Dublin City Fish-n-Chips, Corned Beef and Cabbage and Bangers-n-Mash.  All authentic Irish meals!

Yet, can you dine on traditional Irish fare without a Guinness in front of you? I think not. Currently, D'Arcy McGee's provides authentic Irish beverages shipped directly from Ireland. In particular, the draft beers: Guinness, Guinness 250 Anniversary Stout, Harp Lager, Magners Cider and Smithwick's Ale, are the liquid heart of this Irish Pub.

However, in my opinion, no pub is complete without the sounds of Irish music, which at D'Arcy McGee's is hand selected and constantly playing in the pub to complete the Irish atmosphere. This pub also employs a bartender and server from Ireland, which brings the authentic Irish experience full circle.

Join this pub every Friday night for live Irish music, or stop in to experience the Irish heritage without traveling overseas. For more information visit D'Arcy McGee's website, or call 716.853.3600.

Stay tuned for the next featured Irish Pub in Buffalo.

I guess all traces of the ill fated BBQ joint at that site have been wiped away. I havent been in Darcys since before the short lived "smokehouse". Did they cart all of that Irish woodwork out and re-install it when the bbq place failed?
An irish pub is a much better fit for this place. Besides BBQ should be left to those who know how to make it like Kentucky Gregs or Donnies smokehouse.

Where is Donnies Smokehouse? I wasn't impressed with Kentucky Gregs. Fat Bobs is good.

Donnies is awesome. Its in the fruit belt on Jefferson near the 33. Donnie is a competetive cooker and his place is as much a dining room as it is a trophy showcase.

The style of BBQ is different and in my opinion better than the other upstate offerings including Dinasaur. They use a sweeter molases/brown sugar based sauce as opposed to other places that have more of a tomato-pepper taste. The beef brisket is my favorite and I still cant find another bbq place that serves brisket that tender. Great quality and very friendly people. Very diverse crowd in there every day which means they have done a good job reaching out to more than just the neighborhood.

Ive seen a lot of BBQ places come and go as others have tried to capitalize on the smoked food trend. As Mr. Croce may have found out the hard way that if you are going to run a successful BBQ joint you had better find someone who can prepare this difficult to make food. Thankfuly in WNY we have people like Donnie and Kentucky Greg that are masters of their craft.

It was amusing, the one time I stopped in while it was whats-its-name BBQ, I had the reuben. And I think they had a corned beef dish on the menu, too, so the wife and I basically pretended it was still Darcy's.

In my opinion, you can never have too many Irish pubs in a town. Good food, brew, atmosphere, tunes, and people.

Be careful of the Harp that you get in bottles! It says "Imported" on the label, but it is brewed by Labatt in Canada! Check it out next time you see a bottle.

Here is everything you need to know about Irish beer:

Wow thats interesting about the Harp. I can see a company like that being international in this day and age but I figured the brewing process would be kept in Europe to maintain the snob apeal of ordering a euro beer. Like the labatt people not wanting to brew their stuff in Buffalo to keep the Canadian image.

For my money Ill stick to the many local craft brews made right here in NYS. Fresher, better and no euro smug factor.
