Customers and friends of the Broadway Market have united, creating a group to keep the loved, local business alive. Friends of the Broadway Market is a support organization that aims to promote and revitalize the historic site. The group is open to customers, Buffaloians and anyone else who wishes to see the Broadway Market carry on its legacy.
The Market, located at 999 Broadway Street, serves local businesses and local producers alike. "The Friends of the Broadway Market are committed to promoting, preserving and protecting the Broadway Market," said group co-founder, Sophie Baj. Through their efforts to encourage community participation and maintain the unique character of the Market, the group aims to revitalize the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood.
Friends of the Broadway Market initiatives include promoting awareness of the benefits of consuming locally-grown foods, creating family activities and events to draw people to the Broadway-Fillmore area, and showing people that the Broadway Market is a great place to socialize and shop.
The group has a already started small projects to revitalize the East Side landmark. "Currently, the enhancement of the outside appearance of the Broadway Market area is critical to enticing the public to shop at the Market," said Baj. On Saturday, June 6th, the group planted flowers in the area to brighten the outside of the building.
On Saturday, June 27th, the Friends of the Broadway Market will host their first public event, a clean-up of the area around the Market, from 9:30 AM until 12 PM. The group will pick up trash and sweep Broadway, Gibson, Lombard and South Market streets. Volunteers can meet in the parking lot behind the Market. A light lunch and refreshment will be served afterwards.

Sounds like a great start. But cleaning up the area around the Market is something that should be done on a daily basis if it is being done to encourage more customers. My husband and I have a business and residence on the East side and picking up McDonald's garbage and beer bottles is a DAILY chore. We love where we live, picking up garbage is just part of our lives. The Friends of Broadway Market need to consider paying someone full time to do this clean-up.
