CCTS: A Wheel Good Time

CCTS: A Wheel Good Time
Being an avid cyclist myself, I found watching the inaugural weekly race of the Cobblestone Criterium Twilight Series absolutely fascinating. Not only was the course impressive (and scary), the speeds traveled were downright incredible. To witness the cyclists take the turns without slowing... wheel to wheel... the blur of bikes made it difficult to even capture them in a photo... I felt privileged to be there, catching the action.

I ended up staying for the majority of both races, as not even the Thursday at the Square could drag me away from this newfound thrilling event. For much of the time, I stood between the renovated Elk Street Terminal Lofts and the hulking steel frames of the stalled Seneca Casino. The setting made the race even better - it was the last thing many people would expect to see in this district. From race organizer Frank Grillo:

"The BBC kicked off the Cobblestone Criterium Twilight Series Thursday night in Buffalo's historic Cobblestone district. 50 racers were on hand for the inaugural race. The series started with the 21 riders going off at 6:30 PM. The 35-lap race was fast from the start with Brian Rohr, Wells Fargo Advisors, Lance Johnson, Tom's Pro Bike/Plan2Peak and Bob Patterson, Managed Care Network, breaking off the front after 3 laps. The field was strung out over the whole course for most of the race. Brian and Lance pulled away from Bob and were never seen again. Brian Rohr, Wells Fargo Advisors took the honors on the line for the win.

"The feature race went off at 7:30 with 29 racers. The 50-lap race was dominated by local fast man Jason Skalski, Handlebars. A good part of the field stayed together for most of the race, but Jason was able to pull away and was not seen again till he lapped the field. The pace was fast and furious with many attacks and counter attacks. Jason took the honors easily.

"We had top racers Garnett Abbey, D'Ornellas from Ontario Canada and Todd Scheske, MVP from Rochester come out to race. The consensus from the racers was, this is a true crit course, fast and challenging, which is what a crit course should be.

"We have a few tweaks to make for next week but it really went off without difficulty. The response from the people who live on the course was very positive. People from the Elk Terminal told me "it's about time something is happening down here" they were truly happy to see us and welcomed us. I was really happy about that."

According to Twilight Series race organizer, Frank Grillo, the Elk Street Terminal track is a go for the month of August. Despite lackluster weather in June, the Thursday evening races have been very successful with large racer turnouts. Last Thursday ... Read More

Fantastic event. Thanks for the coverage. I was curious to see the local evening news broadcast that night did not mention that the race occurred. This is a cool venue for Buffalo sports enthusiasts. I cannot compose a coherent paragraph. I hope to see a bigger crowd for this week's crit.

Missed this last Thurs, landscaping project intervened. Hope to get down there for round two! Buffalo sports coverage is lame.. that is why they don't cover this.

At 12:15AM this morning, my husband and I heard a lot of people talking outside our window on Clinton Street. We looked out and there were 30 or 40 bicyclists driving down the street heading east. Anyone know anything about this group?

That's the Midnight Madness group. They meet at midnight every Sunday night. A search on BRO (former site) should pull up the info. I guess last night they ran into some problems in South Buffalo on their ride... they have been know to attract upwards of 100 riders. Many of the riders also participate in Critical Mass... a national movement to create awareness for bike culture. CM departs from Niagara Square every Friday after work.

Sounded like they were having a great time! They do need to show some caution riding around at that time. We certainly never saw anything like it in our neighborhood.

They also need to be considerate of the people that populate this area. There is a dozen empty block surrounding Elk Terminal - yet the decide to race around Elk Terminal. Regardless of what the Buffalo Bicylce Club says - they are not making it easy to get in and out of where we live. I thought this city was trying to get people to live downtown - not move to the 'burbs. I do fully support these activities, and think it is great to get people to come downtown to patronize the few bars and merchants in the area - but I really have to question the selection of the route. Why race around one of the few populated blocks, and not around the vacant unused blocks that surround this area. All of the people that turn out for the event could tailgate in the HSBC lots, watch the race right near their car, and noone would have any issues. And yes I do live at Elk and no I am not looking forward to every single Thursday until the end of August!!!

Really, 6 nights of a slight inconvienance a year is something that will drive people to not live downtown? SO should the Allentown Art Fest be moved to a vacant part of town? Thats kind of what draws people to a city, stuff going on. Am I supposed to move to the burbs because the Italian Fest blows up my spot for a week every summer? I mean really, dont sweat the small stuff man, go have an IPA or two and take er easy dude.

I would think that a couple of hours six evenings of the year would be a pro if I lived at The Terminal. If you could not get in and out at all I could understand - it looked as if the cars were doing fine though. I'm sure that they picked this route partially due to figuring that the people who lived there would enjoy the scene. I would have thought the same. ipaguy, you should stop over and meet these racers and see if there is a symbiotic relationship that can be established in the neighborhood. I watched the cars come in and out of the Main Gate pretty effortlessly. If there was somebody stationed there would it help? If I could get them to come to my neighborhood I would in a heartbeat, but my block wouldn't cut it.
