Buffalo Arts Studio Upcoming Exhibits and Opening Reception

The Buffalo Arts Studio's summer art exhibition series will kick off with a free public opening reception on Friday, June 12th at 7 PM. The event will include lectures by the artists and live music by Chris Campos. Works by local artists, William Koch, Amy Robinson, Rosemarie Bauer Sroka, and Kathleen Sherin, will be displayed from June 12th through August 8th. 

In the first solo exhibit of the series will showcase Koch's 5W30: Wastelands. In his abstract compositions, Koch utilizes traditional and non-traditional materials such as pastels, spray paint, crayon, markers, casting wax, solvent, oil and coffee. "His vibrant palette is indicative of the external beauty that masks our increasingly toxic natural environment," said Cori Wolff, curator of Buffalo Arts Studio. Koch is involved with efforts to revitalize cemeteries and other public grounds in Buffalo. 

The second solo exhibition will feature Amy Robinson Gendrou's Keeping the Thread. Gendrou entered the art world with photography and moved onto mixed media installations. Her installation, Kleenex Shelter, "constructed through the meticulous process of stitching together tissues imprinted with typewritten journal entries to create a flowing sculptural sanctuary," said Wolff. "The viewer is invited to wander through this delicate, yet surprisingly durable, structure and experience an intimate moment of privacy and reflection." 

The third exhibition will feature Water Works by two artists, Rosemarie Bauer Sroka and Kathleen Sherin, whose art reflects the themes of boundaries and water. The exhibition will be held in conjunction with The Year of Our Shared Waters, a hundred-year celebration of the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty between the United States and Canada. Boundary Waters Week honors what is considered the first environmental treaty, guaranteeing that any navigable waters be free and open. 

Sroka's water paintings "reflect the passive attributes of water: balance, neutrality and tranquility," said Wolff. "But upon closer consideration, they begin to evoke a more active, contemplative, and emotional response in the viewer."

Sherin's works address the biological, psychological and physical components of boundaries. "Each print employs a variety of methods, including collage, collagraph, relief printing, drypoint, chine collé, carborundum printing, and monoprint techniques, which are painstakingly combined through layering, cutting, reassembling, and overprinting. This results in outwardly quiet compositions brimming with deeper metaphorical implications."

At the opening reception, live music will be featured from 7 PM until 10 PM with artist talks from 7:30 PM until 8 PM.

Buffalo Arts Studio, located on 2492 Main Street, Suite 500  in the Tri-Main Center, is a not-for-profit organization, providing affordable studio space and gallery exhibitions for artists. The BAS aims to enrich the Buffalo community with art by offering classes, mural programs and exhibitions.
