Thursday at The Square Schedule --- Eight Concerts Rock the Harbor

Thursday at The Square Schedule --- Eight Concerts Rock the Harbor
The lineups are out. The anticipation is over. The schedule for the 23rd season of Thursday at the Square has finally been unveiled. I still remember the first one, back when it was called Thursday in the Park, on grass parking lots at the corner of Main and Chippewa, before the Key Towers were built. Later on 1993 brought the Goo Goo Dolls. In 1995 the 10,000 Maniacs performed, with at least that many fans.

Thursdays are from 5pm to 9pm this year

There are drastic changes from last year. The Lafayette Square portion, which takes place at Main and Court streets between the Library and City Hall, is on Thursdays from May 28 to July 30 (last year that part went almost to October). Music starts a little earlier on Thursdays this year too, going from 5 to 9pm, versus 6 to 10pm last year. Major sponsors this year are M & T Bank and Labatt Blue Light. Beverages remain at $3.00 each.

                                        ECHCW? What's That?

And then there is this year's Buffalo Rocks the Harbor. Previously these were events that took place on the grounds of Shanghai Red's, and before that Crawdaddy's. Then last year, the beautiful Erie Canal Harbor Central Wharf rolled out (need an acronym for that one), and everybody that I talked to absolutely loved it. So much so that some folks thought that this year ALL of the Thursday concerts would go harborside. It might be a little early for that though, with suburban folks just getting used to the new ECHCF (is that even an acronym? Lets get a ruling from the acronym police). Someday perhaps...

Who would you like to see play in Buffalo next year?

The Buffalo Rocks the Harbor events this year are all consecutive day concerts, either Friday-Saturday, or Saturday-Sunday, starting at 5pm. Tickets for the weekend concerts are $10 presale, $20 day of concert. Capacity for the venue is 6,000. Music fans please do let us know (for our own curiosity) who you would like to see at Lafayette Square or at the Erie Canal Harbor Central Wharf next year... I would really love to hear what you think!

                                        And away we go!

Without any further ado, here is the schedule. Headliners are listed first. Thursdays unless otherwise noted. And only Thursdays are free. If you want to sample a headliner's music, just click on the band link and you should be able to hear some of the band's selections. Enjoy. I hope to see you out there! This is very exciting....all this music coming to Buffalo....my BIG problem is that all these funds spent and again and again Buffalo Place spends the big bucks and hires out of towners.....mix it up....So many of our local musicians are asked to donate there services constantly and when money comes to town we don't hire some of our fabulous talent......Justin for the Elmwood Village is the only person dedicated to hiring locals for the Bidwell Park cocerts that I am aware of.....Why not hire Bob Militello for the waterfront, Neville Francis(local) and the Sattelittes, David Kanes Them Jazzbeards, LeeRon Zydeco, Barbara Sinclaire, Shakin Smith...Junction West....it's disappointing that Buffalo Place does not respect our locals enough to share the wealth....Mary Joy Buscemi

Since you asked, I would like to see:

Matt and Kim, Postal Service, The Hush Sound, Los Campesinos!, Smoosh, CSS, The Go! Team, Bright Eyes, Cold War Kids, Modest Mouse, Death Cab For Cutie, Neutral Milk Hotel, Sleeping Kings of Iona, Belle and Sebastian, Red House Painters, Steve Malkmus, Built to Spill, PlayRadioPlay!, Her Space Holiday, Antony and the Johnsons, Fashion Expo 1990, Black Kids, Sun Kil Moon, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Band Of Horses, Broken Social Scene, Shout Out Louds, The Whitest Boy Alive, Blonde Redhead, Mates Of State, The Presets, Iron And Wine and FudgyChewy.

A couple of those bands might need to reunite in order to play, but that's my wish list. And yes, there are some Buffalo bands in there.

Radiohead, Dirty Projectors, MGMT, and Arctic Monkeys would make a nice bill...

Postal Service would be amazing as would radiohead, however, I sincerely doubt Buffalo Place could afford them at $10 a ticket...one can dream...

Cool - Why would people come to see local talent when they can see them at anytime? The point of TITS is so people can see bands that are big at the time or used to be big....btw there have been local opening bands in the past...

I am disappointed that they booked some of the same bands / artists as last year. Also they booked the Black Crowes the same day as Wilco is playing Artpark so I guess I will miss BC too. There are so many up and coming bands now that it would be great to see them before they get too popular to play TITS. It is a nice event though and we are lucky to have it, just wish they got a little more creative with the bands they book, too many repeats.

I agree with cool that it is sad the Buffalo Place has little by little squeezed out the local acts.

Buffalo Place at one time also payed the local talent fairly-in the $100- $200 range (and probably more) per musician depending on a opening or headlining spot.

More recently Stephen Joseph claimed 'this will make your career' after offering a band I was in $25./musician.

Many of the scheduled acts are cool, though. How about some more classic (international) ethnic or jazz acts? The flavor of the moment is just that.

This schedule is a Dumpster fire. TATS exists to keep people downtown on Thursday night to help the bars and restaurants and to make it cool for businesses to locate in the city. It's Buffalo Place's payback for the special tax assessment levied on businesses along Main Street. Not to mention the suburbanites who come down with their cash, weather permitting. I can't wait for the response of the Chippewa bar owners. Will something be developed to fill the hole on Thursday nights in August and September?

Why does Buffalo Place insist on experimenting with this formula? Last year they moved the start time back to 6pm which forced people to decide, "Do I stick around an hour for the show to start, or do I go home?" That obviously was a bust since they moved the start back to 5. Now they take seven Thursday shows away from the Square to support the Harbor. I love the Harbor, I love that there will be shows at the Harbor, I think that shows at the Harbor is one of the reasons the state, etc have poured so much money into it's redevelopment. But shows at the Harbor aren't unique-it's done in Tonawanda and Lockport on the same weekends as downtown and for free. If it is too much for Buffalo Place to support both concert venues then leave the Harbor to someone else to promote. Also, when the show is free and right outside the door after work, most people will go regardless of the band. When the show is even a dollar, and then you have to find a place (and pay?) to park, and it's a special trip downtown on a Saturday and Sunday, and it looks like rain, and "Who's playing? Never heard of them?" then there are too many decisions for the potential audience to make. You limit the appeal. Good thing that there are only 6000 tickets to sell per show.

I completely agree. I hope everyone is not blind to seeing what is going on here with moving the free concert series from the Lafayette Square location, an easy walk to numerous bars and restaurants, to further location where you must pay to see bands that aren't worthy of the ticket price anyway. Thursday at the Square is one of the great things about summers in Buffalo and it is slowly being chipped away, or not so slowly, considering the dramatic shortening of the schedule this season.

I like the lineup (PFunk, Neko Case and Avett Brothers especially) and the split between the Square and the Harbor. It's exciting to have a new venue down by the water for shows.

This stinks of Mayor Brown Clown's doing. The Square is a truly unique venue for people to gather post-work and patronize the local establishments both pre and post show. By moving more shows to the harbor it has to hurt the local economics of the local bars and restaurants.

Likewise, half the fun is the ability to step out of work and be at the Square on a Thursday night. The weekends are full of other various obligations lawnwork weddings, etc...

Plus from a truly sound perspective the Square Rocks!!!!!!

I have no problem with paying for shows and actually spend thousand of dollars a year traveling to gigs.I agree with Annpmike, the Square is the Square and Buffalo Place should be concerned about the downtown, let some other promoter work the Harbor.

I just want to know why Thursday at the square always do the jam bands. if you have some of those bands everyone mentioned above I think there would be a larger turnout then there would be for the Disco Biscuits

What a fantastic line-up, and so many FREE concerts by cool bands to boot-- I can't wait to see P-Funk and Los Lonely Boys-- already marked my calendar for those shows. In the past I've seen 54/40, India.Arie, Arrested Development and others at Thurs in the Square-- it's the place to see and be seen as well as enjoy great outdoor summer weather and music from top acts...the price is right, the beer is cold, the people are looking good, what's not to like? I think it's cool that they've spread out the good times to the waterfront too, and for $10 you're still getting a GREAT deal to hang out and hear music from top acts-- if you don't like coming downtown and finding a place to park then don't come-- leave more room for those of us like me who do-- it's a great place for summer concerts and this year's line-up surpassed expectations!

I think it's great lineup! And the Harbor concerts are a great way to transition away from Lafayette Square.

Whhhaaaaaa!!!! I don't like the bands, Whhhaaaaa Chippewa will miss out on revenue from on Thursday nights in August and September!!!!! Whhaaaa!!!!! I have better ideas Whhaaaaa!!! Whhhhaaa I can't read the poster!!!! (that last one was a joke, that poster stinks!)

We are trying to develop the Harbor, and with this move the Cobblestone district has more potential to grow and prosper now that the casino is a Seneca Nation after thought. Id love to see an event with local bands, maybe on Tuesday nights? It's a great idea!

What jas and wnywatercooler said. TITS throughout August should be a no-brainer. I predict for 2010 they'll flip-flop back to that.

Haha, well until a few years ago it was officially called Thursday In The Square (not "At", which makes little sense and ruins a good acronym).

i can't imagine there NOT being enough money to support TATS throughout August and have the same number of concerts at the harbor. I don't like the shortened schedule at all. September I can understand but August needs thursdays downtown..

also I can see in the future a permanent amphitheater being built on or near the warfe, even though there is one that no one uses already (lasalle park)

This year looks awesome! But like a lot of others on here, I find it disappointing and hard to believe that they can't make the series go longer, at least until the beginning of September. Since I wont come back for school until mid august, I wont be able to see any of the free shows at all. =( They should pick some local bands and maybe some lesser-known artists to fill in the rest of the time- it doesn't seem hard to do. And as for bands for next year- They Might be Giants are awesome. That would be spectacular if they could get the Goo Goo Dolls to come back, too.

And I think The price is a little steep for the warf... this venue could use local talent too. Have more concerts and cut the price, so more people will come.

I love the diversity in this year's line up. Los Lobos and Los Lonely Boys! I'm guessing a lot of Buffalonians aren't too familiar with them (well, maybe Los Lobos)but they are HUGE in Texas, CA and out west. They're fantastic and I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised.

TATS schedule will be announced Thursday, May 27th. The 24th season of Thursday at the Square will be 10 weeks long going from June 10th – August 12th. So at least we'll get a few weeks back.
