Whenever someone asks me where they should stay when they come to Buffalo, I always make sure that I mention the Elmwood Village Inn (Honu House) as one of my top faves. I still can't believe the number of people that I talk to that have no idea that there is a bed and breakfast on Elmwood Avenue. Well, actually it's not a true bed and breakfast, though owner Karen Powell has been known to accommodate her guests in any way that she can. And I don't think the breakfast element of the formula is as necessary since a walk out of the front door in either direction will prove sufficient when searching out a myriad breakfast, lunch and dinner destinations. The inn does feature a second floor kitchenette and Karen provides a Continental breakfast for those who don't have time to explore the neighborhood eateries.
Boy was I surprised when I saw my neighbor, Chip Sullivan, painting the front of this place. The inn has been transformed (almost overnight) into a vibrant icon of the block. The previous color was a grayish-white... not bad, but nowhere nearly as impressive as what can be seen now. Talk about a transformation - the colorful details really pop. Finally the outside pays homage to the inside. What? You haven't seen the inside? Alright, then you can check it out here
. Don't forget to add this inn to your own list of urban guest residences. You can tell your out-of-town visitors to look for the colorful inn near the historic Lafayette Church.
