Sweet_ness 7: Even Sweeter

Sweet_ness 7: Even Sweeter
Every writer needs a coffee shop to call their own, and now Sweet_ness 7 cafe has made our summer even sweeter.  Owner Prish Moran not only added an outdoor patio with greenery and plenty of seating on the Lafayette side of her Grant Street cafe, but the wi-fi reaches out there too.

As Prish and staff went about setting up the patio tables last week, I walked outside with my computer, hoping the signal would stay strong.  It did, which I reported to all of the Apple fans watching and waiting inside.

Prish said that her shop is a home away from home (or office) for many professionals, introduced me to a few kindred spirits, and laughed when she said we all had our favorite tables; it's true.  She didn't state a required minimum purchase, but it may simply be a matter of letting her goods speak for themselves.  I've gone through 3 or 4 things on her menu a few times over and I don't need prompting when I'm heavy at the keyboard.  The tuna panini is my favorite, with tomato and provolone.  Coffee and an egg and tomato sandwich in the morning, hibiscus lemonade and panini in the afternoon, and I could work there all day - and have.

There's something exciting about this strip of Grant that Prish and her sister have taken over.  It's no joke when we call her a pioneer; she's most definitely started something special - and sweet.

On a recent evening at her adjacent gallery, where KC Kratt is showing (extended to the end of May), I left KC to hear the craziest drumming coming from the cafe.  There must have been a circle of 20 drummers that you had to walk through to get inside Sweet_ness.  It was everything we could do not to raise our hands over our heads and line dance our way through.  But that's the way Prish has made this corner.  From a sedate workplace (with food and drink) for renegade professionals by day, to an artistic and musical mecca at night.  I've had a lot of fun on this corner, gotten a lot of work done, been well fed and enjoyed every surprise Prish has whipped out of her bag of tricks.

Over the last couple of years I've been hearing rumors surrounding one of the more unusual structures on Grant Street. It's an old greenhouse, and it had been sitting vacant for quite some time. Because it's so unusual to see a greenhouse on a commerci... Read More

You'll want to start early, but you're going to have to plan your time carefully in order to get in on all of these events (note times below).   The Grant Street Gallery, next to Sweetness_7, will host an opening reception for a PUSH Buffalo fund... Read More

Good for them to spend the money to get a patio open. Why is it so expensive for a business in Buffalo to get a permit for an outdoor space anyways? It adds a lot of character to the street. It should be regulated but not discouraged as it often seems.

Great news on the Wi-Fi. Over the weekend I drove past Sweet_Ness Cafe and loved seeing all the outside tables filled with local hipsters - it really added to the streetscape. Good job!!!

Grant street really seems to be slowly picking up some steam. Added amenities like this will only help to raise values all around it. Looking at the top picture the sliver of a street scene reminds me of Elmwood in years past.

A couple more destinations and houses around them turned around and you will really start to see a rejuvenated neighborhood be born.

Is this cafe dog friendly?

Score: 1 ( 1 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

I love dogs, but I think "dog friendly" really isn't an appropriate term to use. If i go to Sweetness 7 to have a cup of coffee and an egg sandwich, I'd prefer not to have to deal with dogs in and around me.

Why is it that every dog owner thinks every person in a cafe or on the street is dying to pet and interact with their dog?

Please leave the dog at home and come enjoy some human interaction.

Well I would counter that a well behaved dog poses no problem to others around them. And actually are nice to have around. The key is well behaved, if not then the owner should respect others and leave the pet home.

While studying in Germany I was amazed how dogs were allowed everywhere. In malls, cafe's even in some stores. The key was they were all perfectly behaved. They didn't so much look at other dogs let alone bother people around them. What was first a shock became commonplace and background after a couple weeks.

The key are responsible owners otherwise they would have been disruptive.

I've made this place a regular stop several days a week. I'm a Starbucks guy and I love the coffee here, although I wish they offered larger sizes. The scones, muffins and brownies are outstanding! Look for the "day old" basket on the upper left counter for $1 goodies.

Excellent.. I didn't even know this cafe was there. I guess I need to give it a try after I stop at Guercio's!

Actually Scott, please do NOT pet my dog - chances are she will be even more annoyed than myself. The article's main focus was on the *outdoor* patio. I was inquiring if the patio was dog friendly.

It is nice to sit on a patio during/after walking the dog. I'm not suggesting anyone bringing an animal inside. Regardless, I bet loud and unruly children are more of a threat to your "high brow" experience eating an egg sandwich than my small and well trained Jack Russell.

The best indicator of the vibrancy of a city is via dogs. Visit any interesting and inviting urban district and you will find dogs. For example: dogs are as much a Park Slope as the brownstones and Prospect Park.

Moreover, I doubt that you would be a bloke whose interaction I would find entertaining.

Ha, nice response.

Such a protective dog owner. I don't think it is "high brow" to want to enjoy a meal without your well trained Jack Russell around.

I appreciate the personal insinuations about my character based on nothing more than my dislike of people who drag their dogs everywhere.

I would argue against your assertion that dogs indicate the vibrancy of a city, but why bother. I'm sure a bloke like me could never offer anything of value to you.

sbrof, I completely agree with you that it is all about the owner, I just know from personal experience that more times than not, the owner ties the dog up on the patio while doing their business inside and leaves those of us enjoying the outside experience to listen to the barks and deal with the behavior of their perfect little dogs.

People should leave their dogs at home if they are planning going to outdoor cafes...it's comes with the territory of owning a pet. Anyways....GO SWEET_NESS GO!!!!!

It would be nice if someone had a coffee pot outside to sell cups to those of us walking their dogs. I dont take my dog anywhere with the intention of grabbing a table but I would like to stop and grab a cup of joe for the walk without tying my buddy to a parking meter.

As much as i enjoy trying new places, I have to say I am a bit "iffy: about going to this place, let alone sit outside. Grant street isn't the most pleasant neighborhood to relax in and enjoy a cup of coffee. I have driven past this place numerous times and have said that it does indeed look like a pretty cool and funky place however, I'm not too sure I want to hang out outside where it is located.

Bill! You're kidding, right? Come on down - I'll protect you if the occasion presents itself, but I've logged a lot of hours here and never seen any sort of "iffy" action. You'll cheat yourself if you stay away.

The gritty ambience of the Grant Street setting (and the interior design) is exactly what inspires me about this cafe. It's what progress is all about---give a boot to the rules and push courageously into the frontier! To an outsider like me, it's EXACTLY what the city needs (and more of it!)---a 21st century vision that respects, even mourns, the past, yet rejects the same old fussy, quasi-suburban, class-reinforcing template that puts many a yuppie at ease. It's cosmopolitan in the best sense of the word. Cheers for Prish and for everyone who appreciates what's she's doing!
