Summer Heats Up at the Erie Canal Harbor

Summer Heats Up at the Erie Canal Harbor
With the classic 73-foot sailboat, the Spirit of Buffalo as a backdrop, members of the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) and Buffalo Place Inc. announced the summer schedule of events at the waterfront. Congressman Brian Higgins and Erie County Executive Chris Collins were also on hand for the unveiling, as was Sue Gonzalez, special events coordinator for the City of Buffalo. The Spirit is the only vessel allowed to set sail out of Buffalo's Erie Canal Harbor Commercial Slip.

The summer line-up features both entertaining and educational events and activities. Most of these events are free of charge. On Mondays, the Buffalo Museum of Science will sponsor educational programs focused on plants and animals, while Preservation Buffalo Niagara will host 1-hour guided tours that cover the canal's history on Saturdays and Sundays. Dug's Dive, an infamous saloon from the mid-1800s, will come back to life on the waterfront in the historic ruins section of the harbor. Saturdays and Sundays will also feature free musical performances.

This year also marks the second annual free Independence Day celebration at the waterfront, complete with fireworks and great local musical acts. The music will also keep going with Buffalo Place Rocks the Harbor, the annual music festival on the waterfront. Tickets for these concerts are on sale now for $10 in advance per concert, or $20 at the door. Call 716.852.5000 for ticket information. The lengthy schedule also includes children's activities, kayak and bicycle rentals, an indie marketplace, adaptive water sports, sailing classes, seminars and much more.

At today's ceremony, Jordan Levy, chairman for ECHDC, spoke first, emphasizing the growth of the Buffalo waterfront over the past year. According to Levy, during the last 12 months, more than 100,000 people have visited the new Erie Canal Harbor site.

Higgins spoke about Buffalonians seeing real progress on the waterfront, including the recent demolition of another section of the Aud. "It's not about knocking the Aud down," he said. "It's about building something up." For Higgins, the goal is to attract people to the waterfront, which will in turn spur private sector businesses to invest in the area. "Through a combination of progress and programming we are creating new excitement along the water's edge," he said.

Collins took the podium and further discussed the rebirth of the city's waterfront. "Once people come down and see what's here, they come back," he said. He continued to praise the ECHDC for its programming this summer, which will both entertain and educate visitors, making the waterfront a destination for Buffalo residents. "This new schedule of daily recreation, educational, and entertainment opportunities will help bring people of all ages to the waterfront and make this summer season exceptional," he said.

Gonzalez stepped up to the podium to represent the City of Buffalo and Mayor Brown. She discussed how the harbor has become a "true destination" in our city. In a statement, Brown echoed the same sentiment: "The Buffalo waterfront is quickly becoming a great recreational destination for city residents and visitors. The summer programs planned for Erie Canal Harbor will only add to the increasing appeal of this area."

The complete schedule of events at the Erie Canal Harbor is online now. See you at the waterfront!

Did Lord Byron not show up because he was told he couldn't bring his own podium?

Well, Brown he was clearly intimidated by the far superior podium that was already on hand, but I believe he was busy trying to figure out how to cover his a$$ for the whole One Sunset debacle.

There is still ALOT of work that needs to be done.

1) NYSDOT needs to come up with money for lift bridges at Michigan, Ohio and Erie or Pearl. Furhman Boulevard must be integrated into the Erie Canal Wharf District.

2) Other historical factors need to be added such as replica of LaSalles Griffon, a replica Canal Barge/Freight Schooner and some replica of Adm Perrys Warship historically linked to the Battle of Lake Erie, the Burning of Buffalo, the Civil War Naval Yards and of course Fort Porter.

3) I would add that reconstructing the Passenger Concourse to the DL&W for Great Lakes Cruise Ships to dock would be a great way to extend the Wharf District all the way to Michigan Street.

4) This needs to be brought up because a light rail connection to the airport represents downtown's only option for 10 year plan to move the NFTA maintenance sheds for light rail out of the DL&W to the Central Terminal...and the Bus Terminal off the ECC Downtown Campus to the Central Terminal.

A 1st floor DL&W could be perfect for a downtown market or a downtown Albright Knox as well as passenger concourse for various cruise ships. Imagine a Great Lakes Cruise Ship docking in Buffalo with junkets to the Buffalo Casino! AT SOME POINT DOWNTOWN ISNT GOING TO WANT THOSE MAINTENANCE SHEDS ON PRIME DOWNTOWN WATERFRONT..AND THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE LOCATION IS THE CENTRAL TERMINAL AND THE CENTRAL TERMINAL ISNT VIABLE WITHOUT THE AIRPORT CORRIDOR CONSTRUCTED.

Very well stated! Great points you bring up too - you're especially right about the Great Lakes Cruise ships and central terminal LRT extension to the airport. Critical.

Way to go Rich and Kate (and Pierre) - Captains of the Spirit of Buffalo. Just think that it took your own initiative to get that schooner here. And now it's the backdrop for these announcements. It just goes to show you how important the private sector is when it comes to making the Inner Harbor real and not just a canned waterfront. There are a lot of people who have been here for a long time that should be a part of this initiative. I hope that the 'powers that be' continue to include outside help when it comes to doing what's best for the city.

The Erie Canal area is a first rate attraction. The number of different events taking place there is fantastic.

At least Higgy Bear doesn't have to worry about sun burn when he goes to the Erie Canal Harbor, he has a 200 foot unbrella also known as the skyway to keep cool under.

I like the font and the sign.

I think the font and the sign are great. This money should be spent elsewhere. This will be the place to be and I cant wait to watch them start building all the proposed development such as Bass Pro. What an exciting project for region. I just want to see the actual businesses start investing.
