Literacy
demands for our society are not being met throughout the nation today; it has become a
staggering problem throughout the nation.
Literacy lays the foundation for our education as well as the nature of
democracy. There are many children
in Buffalo as well as throughout the entire U.S. that can't read or write at
their own grade level, there is an increasing number of teens dropping out of
school, and many adults also haven't acquired the necessary skills to thrive in the
increasingly competitive job market with a higher demand.
For these reasons, among others, Read to Succeed Buffalo, the joint venture of over 50 organizations with the purpose to improve literacy in Buffalo, will be holding their Right to Literacy Convention in Buffalo, which will be sponsored by Literacy Powerline--one of the nation's leading advocates for community literacy programs. Many educators as well as community leaders and involved citizens are expected to assemble at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Saturday, June 13th from 8AM to 2PM to further declare this right to literacy and justice for all.
According to a Read to Succeed Buffalo spokesman, our literacy levels do not meet the national and global demands for higher levels of comprehension, computation, and critical thinking, which demands change. As a result, participants will sign a "Declaration of Literacy and Justice for All" to further commit our community to the issue after learning deeper issues of the injustice of illiteracy and discussing and voting on resolutions to inform the community of system change.
Read to Succeed hopes to reach out to anyone and everyone for this event and encourages all to attend, the event is also free, to register call 843.8895. Read to Succeed branches out to all ages to further the cause of both literacy and raising public awareness of how it is in fact an issue. More information of the collaboration of the many organizations can be found on the Read to Succeed Buffalo site.

May the commitment to literacy expressed above inspire some to take a writing course someday.
