Inner Harbor Water Craft Rentals

Inner Harbor Water Craft Rentals
This was a good Memorial Day weekend for the city's Inner Harbor. There was lots to do and lots see. I was particularly impressed by the latest watercraft draws. It was the first chance that I had to visit the BFLO Harbor Kayak (and canoe and bike) rental facilities. As I WALKED my bike over the boardwalk I could see a bright yellow kayak at the edge of the water. A bunch of bikes flanked it and a canoe was perched right out in front. It was quite an interesting selection of equipment.

Operator Jason Schwinger is still awaiting the arrival of another solo kayak, as well as a tandem. My girlfriend and I are holding out until then, though we may just try the canoe next time we head down. Rental rates are $20 an hour for the solo kayak and $30 an hour for the tandem kayak or canoe (Jason is anticipating the arrival of four sit-on-top solo kayaks and one sit-on-top tandem kayak next weekend). GO! Buffalo bike rentals are $15 an hour.

I was also happy to see the Spirit of Buffalo nestled inside the Erie Canal walls. The crew could not have found a better place to showcase the schooner. The first private charter went out last week, and it couldn't have been christened by a better organization - AmeriCorps. This evening marked the first public charter (6pm) - it costs $28/adult & $18/kids under 12 to embark on a two-hour sail. Not a bad price to sail around Lake Erie on such a beautiful ship. The public 'voyages' run fairly regularly (in the evening) throughout the week. The best thing to do is to stop on down to the slip and pick up one of the Buffalo Urban Outdoor Education Foundation pamphlets.

Now, how 'bout getting Bass Pro down there so we can rent some day-trip motor boats?

I agree! That would surely add volumes to the Buffalo Inner Harbor waterfront. It's a shame we don't have them now, but it is certainly possible if they come...

I also stopped down there Saturday night. It was great to see so many people.. families, YOUNG couples, older couples... walking around and taking in the sights. It made me wish I could speed up time two years when, hopefully, we'll have a fully restored network of canals, cobblestone streets and Bass Pro.

It was also great to see the HUGE crowds of people strolling down the sidewalk/stonewalk at Erie Basin Marina... snapping pictures and taking in the sunset. I could here "Piano Man" in the background from karaoke at The Hatch. Everyone was in a great mood and talking to strangers like they were old friends. It felt very 'Buffalo.' It felt great.

speaking of bass pro...
i love when bass pro comes up because that story is so ridiculous. that story is getting as old as the signature span. but i'll still hold cautious optimism for it's arrival.

anyone actually been to a bass pro? there is one across the river from me on the IN side of Louisville. it's the biggest one (tentative - buffalo) in the country, built from an old something-or-other. it's pretty insane. it's almost a day trip in and of itself. i'm not even that into hunting/ fishing/ etc and i found myself there for about two hours.

but, what i'm wondering with the bass pro in DT Buf: Aside from the initial novelty, are people really going to come from far and wide to buy a high end tree stand, when they can drive 15 minutes closer to just pick one up at the ubiquitous ****'s? I guess it illustrates the importance of making the area a destination for more than lumberjacks.

I may be off, but anytime I've gone to bass pro, the patrons are more your backwood's hank than your urban dweller.

wow, stringent reg's here. FCC must be screening BR's boards. that should read: "at the ubiquitous 'Rick's Sporting Goods'"

Where is the public access point to launch my canoe? Is it the same spot Bflo Harbor Kayak uses?

That is the back of The Aud - and no, it's not a public boat launch. There is one further down on the Buffalo River, right after Father Conway Park on the right hand side. It's a nice launch with a small public park!

That's over a mile away. We need downtown public access to the water, the millions should provide for at least one tiny sliver needed for a launch?

I'm pretty sure you can launch a kayak or canoe at the tip of LaSalle park right at the mouth of the Harbor. Was driving by the other day and thought I noticed a place to do it there.

while I agree that a boat launch in DT would be nice... but boat launches tend to require lots if close parking for vehicles. Look at all other boat launches around, there isn't much around them besides a big parking lot for the vehicles trailers. That is something we do not need in middle of our the historic canal area. There are probably many better places in the vicinity of downtown that would work fine.

I tow my kayak from my bike and need no car parking spot. Most kayaks are car-topped and need no special accomodations. The planning needs to incorporate multi-modal and full public access. These rental rates are high !!

With those cost to rent a kayak and bike...He will be a deterent to the waterfront. 15 an hour for a bike. It should be like 20 for the whole 8 hour day. Typical, no competition = screw job prices. Good Riddens Pal!

A bunch of us olden people were at the marina this weekend. We were standing at the rail to the right of The Hatch looking toward the lake when someone looked to the left and exclaimed what's that!
.
It was this schooner! Big as life! Bigger than the picture. With those red sails up! And I was able to identify it!!! Next time at the marina we all want to BE on it...
